WHO issues emergency travel advisory

HANOI, Vietnam, March 15 — A nurse in Hanoi has died from a mystery flu-like virus that has infected scores of people in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore and sparked a global warning from the World Health Organization. The death is the second reported in Asia in three days. A 50-year-old American businessman died in Hong Kong on Thursday after being flown from Hanoi with respiratory problems.

When asked whether the illness could be caused by bioterrorism, Gerberding said, "We have an open mind and will be keeping an open mind as we go forward."

WHO spokesman Dick Thompson said in Geneva, "Until we can get a grip on it, I don't see how it will slow down. People are not responding to antibiotics or antivirals. It's a highly contagious disease and it's moving around by jet. It's bad."

That "mysterious pneumonia" is SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Apparently SARS began in China and then spread to Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam. So far 57 have died, including 4 in Canada. Two hospitals in the Toronto area have been closed.

Because of SARS the women's world ice hockey championships, scheduled to begin in Beijing later this week, have been canceled. The US Centers for Disease Control and Health Canada have warned people not to travel to China due to the outbreak.

The Toronto Star and Globe and Mail have ongoing coverage of SARS.

AIDS was scary enough, but this one really scares me! Unlike AIDS, this is apparently transmitted through the air without any personal contact and can remain "active" on inanimate objects for hours...like restaurant table tops.

I sincerely hope they get a handle on this soon.
