Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unveiled plans yesterday to remake John Kander and Fred Ebb's CABARET. The original 1972 film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won in eight categories including Best Actress which went to Liza Minelli in the role of Sally Bowles. Best Actor went to Joel Grey (as the Emcee) and Bob Fosse took home the Oscar for Best Director. The film lost the award for Best Picture to Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER.

Preproduction for the upcoming remake began shortly before the release of CHICAGO. For security reasons, no meetings have as yet taken place on studio property but this is expected to change in light of this announcement.

The studio revealed in a press conference that actor-musician Bruce Willis has agreed to take over the role of the Emcee. Meanwhile, Madonna is expected to accept the role of Sally Bowles, the naughty British star of Germany's Kit Kat Klub. Already creating quite a stir, is the announcement that British actor Hugh Grant has signed on in the role of Brian Roberts. When asked about Grant's suitability for a musical role, a spokesperson from Metro jokingly said, "if it turns out that Mr. Grant's voice is not up to the challenge we would most likely dub in another voice, or else delete that song -- titled, Perfectly Marvelous -- as was the case with Michael York in Fosse's film."

Sir Richard Attenborough is on board to helm the project. Toby Jaffe, Metro's head of production, said: "We were delighted with Attenborough's cinematic reinvention of A CHORUS LINE and we are looking forward to a repeat of that success."

Fresh from her recent stint with the hit TV series AMERICAN IDOL, Paula Abdul is already hard at work as choreographer. Rosie Perez was originally inked but was forced to bow out due to the sprained ankle she sustained performing stunts in an upcoming Spike Lee joint.

Jaffe went on to add that he has great expectations that the new film will duplicate the success of the original film and last year's CHICAGO. Specifically, he predicted that the new version of CABARET will be in the running at Oscar time next year. Jaffe feels that "the movie musical is back" and he intends to repeat the Oscar glory of the 1972 film.

CABARET: THE MILLENNIUM EDITION will begin principal photography in mid-May and will be in limited release starting on Christmas Day. Although the movie will be shot on celluloid, the initial roll-out will be exclusive to theatres with filmless digital projection systems similar to those used for STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES.

Doubt began with the madonna inclusion, but once you had anyone claiming to like the film version of "Chorus Line" I remembered the date

Oddly enough, I learned a few days ago that there really is a plan to remake CABARET but with Nicole Kidman.

every studio is gonna do a musical. This fad will die when Hollywood finds it just did the next Grease 2. [Big Grin]

I'd be all for releasing a DVD of the new Broadway production, gawd knows there are bootleg videos of it with various casts being sold online.

As far as a real remake, that would just as stupid as a GWTW or Sunset Blvd remake; don't mess with a classic.

If they did try , I can easily imagine Liza popping some pills and getting ahold of some firearms and taking a trip to the studio! I wouldn't blame her one bit! [Big Grin]
