X2, the upcoming sequel to X-Men, has been changed to X-Men United. Fox changed the name after deciding that some people might not know what X2 stands for. I don't know just how stupid that they think people are but I guess that we should be seeing new posters and stuff soon.

This is pretty stupid. I wouldn't expect anything else from marketeers though. X2 is cool. X-Men United is not. [Roll Eyes]

Dang! We have just about every banner & window cling hanging around in the lobby for X2. I wonder if they'll actually re-do all that stuff! [Razz]

I am now hearing that the title is going to remain X2 in theaters but will be know as X-Men United for promo purposes only. One reason being that the movie X2 has already been rated so they would have to resubmit it if they wanted to change the name (I am not sure if this is true or not). I Don't see why they just don't use X2:Evolution unless they were also concern with people being confused because of the other movie name Evolution from two years ago (Or a lawsuit from the studio).

The new title is super stupid, but even X2 sounds like it was thought up by a dumbass. I mean c'mon, they can do better than either of those titles.

It should be required by law that anyone saying "X2" outloud also be on a skateboard doing X-TREME trix. Or maybe a snowboard. People who are not eXtReMe have no business saying things like "X2". [Smile]

Or perhaps after the success of "Bend it like Beckham", this is the new soccer movie featuring the greatest football team in the world

X UNITED

"X2 United" sounds like a soccer all-star team. Isn't there already a team called DC United or something like that? The whole "X2" thing makes me think of K2 ski equipment.

Perhaps that begs the obvious question, "why wasn't this titled with something that made more sense, like 'X-Men: Mutant War'?"

The full title is X2: X-Men United. Fox might have figured that for the casual moviegoer, the phrase "X2" standing alone might mean a scaled-down version of xXx. [Big Grin]

Incidentally, X2 will open as close as possible to day-and-date around the world. Australia, Belgium, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Jamaica, Spain, Switzerland, Venezuela and most Pacific Rim countries open X2 on 4/30. Austria, Brazil, England, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea follow on 5/1. Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Russia and Trinidad & Tobago wait until the following week; India won't get X2 until late May; Egypt will get it in June.

Why don't they just call it "X Men 2?" That's what every person will be calling it from now till doomsday, no matter what the title is.

"Men United" makes it sound like a gay porno movie. [Roll Eyes]

Or maybe they changed it to "X-Men United" to cash in one last time on the nation's intermittent dynamic patriotism. After all, Anger Management made over $40M and it had enough patriotic cliches to kill a small horse. And if that wasn't enough, they had to go ahead and throw in old whats-his-face from you-know-where to say something witty. [Roll Eyes]

We just received a promotional piece from Fox. On the cover it says:

X-MEN 2
THE EVOLUTION CONTINUES
PROMOTION CONTEST

then below that it says
PROMOTE X2

I don't even think they know what the title is.

Maybe they can circulate three different cuts of the movie. This way each cut will have it's own title.

X2
X-Men2
X-Men United

Newspaper adverts in the US carry the "United" subtitle below the X2 logo.

Incidentally, there are some unusual bookings/non-bookings for this tentpole. In Connecticut X2 will open at a New Haven arthouse -- the York Square Cinemas -- since National Amusements won't open X2 in nearby Orange or North Haven. In Manville NJ, Reading Cinemas will not play X2 as that theater is boycotting all Fox product.

The DVD release of X-Men is called X-Men 1.5, probably because it is supposed to contain a lot of bonus material. I think that`s quite a clever title for a change.

There are 2 X-Men DVDs, at least in Region 1. The original X-Men (which I have):
 -

And X-Men 1.5, which has more bonus materials:

Charles- Curious as to why Reading Cinemas is boycotting Fox. Any details? Is it just Manville, or other locations as well?

Wow, must be great to the position to tell distributors to go suck an egg! Usually when a theater stops showing a distrib's products its because they haven't honored exhibition contracts and get prints yanked from them.

Is this a revolution in the making? Just in time for May Day! [Smile]

Even though they changed it to X2: X-men United for ad purposes, I noticed that nowhere in the film did they use the extended name. Everywhere it is just X2.
