Here is the problem; Windows 2000 pro running on a small HP with 2 hard drives, one removable. When I try and move certain files around (mp3's mostly) I get a 'sharing violation' message. WTF is going on and what can I do about it?

Something application is "locking" the files. If you have multiple copies of Windows Explorer running and one of them is "parked" (highlighting) a folder or on a file you're trying to copy, you can get a sharing violation.

I ran into this a couple of times. If I have the file open in an application, I couldn't move it until that application is closed.

Incase anyone is interested, Windows Media Player was locking the files to do a shell preview. Right clicking, so as not to initiate the preview, solved Josh's problem.

Related to which, Windows Explorer (W2K PRO with SP2 and 3) will never let me copy a file between two locations on the same hard disc - it will only copy a shortcut. I've long since learned to live with it by copying to another hard disc and then back again, but if anyone knows how to disable this annoying feature I'd be very grateful...

Does it affect all file types Leo, or just executables?

Is it just the actual 'Windows Explorer' app that does this or does the same thing happen in any shell window ('My Computer', 'Desktop', etc.)?

Am I right in assuming that clicking and draging with the right mouse button and then selecting 'copy' when the button is released over the 'destination area' doesn't work?

If in doubt always resort to Crtl-C (source) then Ctrl-V (destination). Bye bye shortcuts.

Tried that, The control C and Control V thing doesnt work, only the right-click trick seems to work.
