For a summer event I want to rent a pair (or a single with LP) of portable 35mm machines for an outside movie screening. Last year I wheeled out our large 16mm Xenon machine but I can't really move a Vic 8!

If anyone knows where I can rent, borrow, steal, or if they are cheap enough buy, 35mm portable machines that would be great. (UK, Southampton.)

Future Projections, based in South London, would be one possibility - they do both dry hire and with people.

Another could be the Exeter University film society. When I was at Exeter as a postgrad student (96-99), the person who did the projection there was a chap called Nick Keen, who if memory serves me correctly also organised outdoor and 'one-off' film shows at a variety of venues on a freelance basis. As Southampton isn't that far from Exeter, it may be that he could help. I'm sure that the Students' Union there could put you in touch with him.

There's a pair of DeVry portables for sale for $1,200 in this month's Boxoffice Magazine (www.boxoffice.com). But I think they come out of Florida so there'll be a heafty shipping charge.

I have spoken to Peter before about buying portables but they seemed quite a way out of our budget (for new ones anyway) for the occasional summer external show. I know he occasionally lurks around here.

I know the BFFS (British Federation of Film Societies) had a pair of portable 35mm machines that they lend out to film societies which don't have 35mm as their main format. My contact there has since dried up so I don't know if they are still available for rent (or what condition they are in).

If we could buy one (or two) for a few hundered pounds then that would be great but as with most specialist gear it is often very expensive. Saying that though, One of my colleagues picked up a pair of virtually unused FP20's with lamphouses for the price of renting a van! If he could get them out before they knocked the theatre down they were his! Right time Right Place again.
