Ian, I sincerely feel for you and I know what you are feeling. It is a very tough thing to deal with and every time I lost one of my "babies", I cried for days...and sometimes even now at their thought. It is sinful that we should get soooo attached to these unconditional companions.

As above. The cat I grew up with, Jekyll, lived to be 23 (and in the course of so doing survived two road accidents and a broken leg) so no-one could say he didn't have a good innings - but it was still a wrench when the time finally came.

Repeating all the above Ian. Sorry for your loss. We've got two cats at home with us, and they were our "boys" before we actually had real boys of our own. They are both tempermental and stubborn, and one of them constantly gorges himself with food at any given chance.

Even with their shedding and required "scooping", there's still nothing like a lazy Sunday afternoon - piled up in my recliner reading the Sunday paper and having an 18 pound cat lying on your chest poking his cold wet nose thru the newspaper, begging for some attention.

So sorry. Spike(8), Harvey(9) and Angel(4) are my cat babies, can't imagine a day without them. Amazing how much our pets add to our lives.

Myself as well as Brenkert, Century, Gardner, Kaplan, & Tux are sadened by your loss. There was indeed a Simplex but she went, also after 17 years, a couple of years ago.

Well Ian, although I am very uncomfortable replying to any post made by you because of your freaky new picture, I do know how it feels to lose a cat. My cat Jynx who lived to be 16 years old is now dead. You met Jynx a few times I believe. He was very friendly. Anyway I remember how you would swoop Athena up and into your arms and she'd lay there belly up. My current cat would slice me to ribbons if I tried that. Athena seemed to love it.

My current cat Murphy does not send any condolences. He is unaware that Athena ever existed and also, he's just a cat. I tried to tell him and he just ran away. When it's time for Murphy to go, I'm not putting him to sleep... he's getting the gas chamber! My Nintendo Gamecube sends its condolences, though. Not sure why (or how), but it does.

Thank you all. Good memory Joe. Athena was a very hands on cat. During her 24 hour reprieve from the governor, she got three square meals, the last being one of my roommate's can of tuna fish as I had already given her cat food to a poor starving employee. (For her cat, we don't underpay them that much!) She went out purring, kicking and still able to cause trouble. She spent her last day out doors curled up in the grass. Her last night on my bed asleep. I can't say I got much sleep.

The vet figured she had no more than 2-weeks and I could see that she wouldn't be able to eat much after the week. The tumor was in her mouth and eye. She couldn't open her mouth very far. I had to do it yesterday as I moved yesterday and felt it would have been unfair to put the cat through a move the final weeks of her life. Intellectually I accept it, but emotionally I still feel I wanted those final two weeks.

Athena, the virgin goddess of war.

Lifetime statistics. 2 mice (I said war not hunter ), no birds, 7 hearts, and countless other cats. She used to come home quite often with a paw full of someone else’s fur. For this proclivity she suffered a torn ear and a broken leg. And yet she still managed to look cute doing it. She was a damn fierce little 7-pound cat. She loved all humans, was indifferent towards dogs and took on all comers in the cat world. She and Ashley (Ky's late cat) seemed to strike some kind of detente and managed not to kill each other. Good thing too as Nicky had 5-pounds on Athena, not that it would have mattered.

An employee gave her to me. I didn't want a cat. I like cats, I just didn't want to take care of one. So 17 years later I'm still waiting for Mary Thompson to find Athena a good home. It's too late Mary, I think Athena found a good home.

Ky is off to the shelter to find himself a new cat. I'm going to take a break and go without for a while. It will be a cold day in Cloverdale before I find a cat as nice as Athena. I just moved in to a new home that features flooring made just for a cat. The living room is tiled and the bedroom carpet is multicolored to hid those pet stains. But it will have to be just me for a while.

Isn't it remarkable how many cat lovers there are out there on the forums? [Smile]

Belated condolences Ian. I've had the same cat for about 10 years now (her name is Josie). Before her, I was living out in the country and had sort of adopted a stray cat. Came home from work one day and there she was lying in the middle of the road with her legs all going which way. Nothing to do but scoop her up and bury her. She had had kittens just prior to that, one of which my sister now has. Anyway it's amazing how attached we get to our pets.

I think it's great how attached we get to our pets. I always worry about people that form no emotional bonds with animals. I mean, I can understand not feeling a bond with a gold fish, but how can a person have a dog or cat for years and years and not really care when the critter passes on? I've met people like that. They scare me. I think Ian's heart is in the right place! [Smile]

When Jerry, my beloved 15 year old orange/red tabby left this Earth almost two years ago, I missed him terribly. I know how you feel after losing a good friend who was a part of your life for 17 years. You have my heartfelt condolences.

I am so sorry for you in the loss of your Athena. I know the feelings. My cat Prissy, who lived to the ripe old age of 19 passed away almost a year ago. She looked much like your kitty did.

It leaves a hole in you for a long time. People that dont like cats dont understand the attachment. I hated cats until I got Prissy when she was a tiny 3 week old kitten. She had been abandoned by her mother. I had a pal that was able to supply me with fresh feline milk, and she drank from a medicine dropper.

Try to be happy with all your memories of your kitty. I know my Prissy is in a better place with no pain. Your kitty is, too.

Athena... What a lovely name.

I love cats. I play with my friends' all the time even though I am deathly allergic! They really are the best...

Now remember, in the middle of being sad, to smile when You go trough the memories of a very long and properly good cat's life.
The only sure thing buy getting one self a new pet is alas, that a sad day will follow...
Hope, You will find a new kitty soon, not to replace, but to follow up, up there on the platter after Athena.
