When I asked people that play religiously, they said, "That's not a real cribbage board!" I think its used to keep score of how many games each person won...not sure though. Although, depending on which area of the country you go in...they all play it different or not at all. I know that cribbage is a real "easterner" game. [Smile]

We have always used those bottom rows to denote the number of games each player has won. Or, how many we've had to drink so far. [beer]

Those extra rows are indeed for keeping track of games won. If you "Skunk" your opponent (win the game before he has passed the 3/4 mark) you peg two holes on the extra row. If you "Double Skunk" him (finish before hes has gotten through 1/2 of the points) you peg three holes on that extra row. It's kind of an optional way to extend a play session beyond one game. First person to win enough games to move a peg down that extra row wins the set.

Different people use them for different things. That's why they aren't marked.

Sometimes they are used for keeping track of how many games each player has won. (Skunks & double skunks as mentioned above.) Sometimes, on a contiunous track, they are used for telling how many laps you've made around the board.

On my favorite board (one that I made) there are only 60 holes for each player. 30 holes by 2 rows. There are two extra holes between the rows called "Out" and "In". You start with a peg in the "Out" hole. Once you've made 61 points or more you switch that peg to the "In" hole. When you get back down to the end of the board again you know you've reached the "finish line".

When I play with my wife we usually only play two or three games per session. In college, when I played with other people, we used to keep track of how many games we won or lost with "Tuits".

One of my OTHER favorite boards was made from a piece of elk horn. The top was shaved flat and holes were drilled in. Each player's track branched off on each side of the "Y" in the horn. I love to take that one to a coffee shop where I know there are a lot of "tree huggers". It'd draw lots of stares from people. Every once in a while, you'd get some idiot who'd come up to you and make some comment about "animal cruelty". I loved to see their faces when I told them, "Elk shed their horns every year, you doofus!"
