Got to love it. I have been from Akron to Zanesville, Cleveland to Xenia. Ohio just plain sucks!

I still think the picture of Rachel with me on my website: www.donsworld.org looks more like she looks in real life. I was going to cut me out of it and submit it to Brad for on here, but my head messes up her hair so it would look stupid..... Even the picture being used right now doesn't really look all that much like her.... She is MUCH cuter in person... Ask Scott Norwood - he knows what she looks like! Sean M. probably has an opinion too, but he is mad at her because she is moving away from him....

Actually there are many neato light houses along the lake Michigan coast line all the way up to Door County!! Rachel should feel right at home.

Point Beach State Forest, Cana Island, probably a few smaller ones too, plus several in Michigan's UP. I am kind of into lighthouses. I have photographed several and have a bit of the decor around the house.

20 hours is a long time for a cat in a car.

The last time I transported a cat this way, which was admittedly only a five-hour trip, the advice from the vet was as follows. Firstly put very thick layers of newspaper only in the basket, so that if he 'relieves himself' the top layer(s) can easily be removed and thrown away. Secondly, provide plentiful supplies of water but no food during the journey. Thirdly, when you get to your destination keep the cat indoors for at least 48 hours, longer if he still seems agitated. If you let him out immediately, he will simply try and get home again.

This was precisely what happened when my mother moved a couple of years ago, just half a mile across town. About a week after the move, the cat went AWOL. After much searching and calling, she concluded that he must have had a road accident (the new house was just off a busy town-centre street). Soon afterwards the new owners of the place Mother had moved out of 'phoned her... Fergie had turned up in the back garden. Over the sort of distance you'd need to drive 20 hours to cover I don't think there's much danger of that, though.

However, the 'no food' rule is not the advice given on pet transport in this website...

Thanks for the cat advice. I didn't think of the layering of newspaper. Rachel is getting some "Happy Pills" for the cat which will hopefully ease her trauma on the way over.

If there's any laying going on I'm sure it will be in the back seat - well away from the steering wheel. [Smile]

Here's your new light "beaconing" you home to Manitowoc (Indian word meaning "You buy ice-machine".) The river empties into Lake Michigan, where in winter the Michiganas freeze their butts while ice fishing.

Just a bit of history on Manitowoc, If anyone gives a rip....

The name Manitowoc is based on the Indian word "Manitou" which they use to refer to their spirit. It actually means, loosely translated, "The Place Where the Spirits Walk".

Manitowoc is the home of the well known Manitowoc Ice Machines, and the world famous Manitowoc Cranes. It is also currently the home of Mirro brand cookware, but that will be changing soon as the company is moving its operations to a more wetback friendly area. Manitowoc Shipbuilding was a provider of submarines for World War II, one of which is docked in the river adjacent to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and is available for tours. Manitowoc also used to be the home of Kelvinator Commercial Products, who produced the Kelvinator line of refrigeration equipment. Kelvinator is one of the White Consolidated Industries which also manufactures other products such as Hotpoint and Gibson. The original home of Kingsbury beer (no one probably ever heard of it) was Manitowoc before G. Heileman Brewing bought it and moved it to LaCrosse - Kingsbury was still a local favorite until they stopped producing it a few years ago. Some of you old-timers might even remember Rahr's beer, which was made in Manitowoc by the Rahr Malting Company. Manitowoc is currently the Western port of a carferry that crosses Lake Michigan between Manitowoc, WI and Ludington, MI, and we still produce some malt components for Anheuser Busch Company. I can't think of anything else we're known for at this moment in time, but I thought you might enjoy a bit of the history of the place where Rachel is Moving to.

I will be there all of next week in varying capacities (you know how those women like to plan us guy's lives, and how those plans change with the direction of the wind!), and hopefully I get to see more of you than a 1 hour car ride when I was nervous as hell and didn't have a clue what was going on!! We people on the coasts know about seafaring in the oceans but sometimes are surprised to see the extent of shipbuilding and big ship transport along the shores of the Great Lakes and its river estuaries.
I went through a WW German submarine in Chicago, (probably at the Field Museum,) and there's a US one dockside next to the Queen Mary in Los Angeles.
Manitowoc sounds like a most interesting place.

Actually we had a managers meeting on monday with all the managers and the owner...we were there. Did you ask?
