This week marks the birthday of the opening of the first drive in theatre in the US. It opened in 1933 in New Jersey. Yesterday, there was a nice little piece about this, and the history of the drive in theatre (and current revival) on C.B.S. Sunday Morning

Gee, that's is very interesting news. I always wondered how long the drive in movie theatres has been around, Hawaii's first drive in theatre, Consolidated's Kaliolani Drive In did not open until the late forties and I remember seeing a show there only once when I was in high school. I recall having a very good time. Those were the times when the sole purpose of going to these venues was to see a movie and nothing else! [Smile]

Although I have visited the States several times I have always missed out on going to a Drive-In-Movie. I must make the effort when I hopefully visit relatives in Melbourne next year.

I suggest when in Melbourne that you visit the Lunar Drive-in in south-east Melbourne which should be getting its third screen later this year.

And the Camden Drive-in was the last Drive-in in the state to close, making it both the first in the country and last in the state. New Jersey does not currently have any Drive-in theatres.

Actually, the last drive-in theater to close in New Jersey was the Rt.35 Drive-In in Hazlet. A capacity crowd viewed the last show there on September 5, 1991.

Redstone then sold off part of the property, but kept an interest and ultimately built a 12-plex on the site of the former drive-in.

I love drive-ins. And I think it's really cool that they have birthdays just like ME! Kind of ironic that the first drive-in was built in 1933 and I am 22...
