Disney and Pixar before re-releasing their 1989 short "Knick Knack" and attaching it to their release of "Finding Nemo". Disney and Pixar virtually eliminated the breasts of two female charactors. USA today observed "In the original, the girls have breasts the size of large grapefruits", In the new version the breasts just aren't there". [Eek!]

Cineplex ran these Pixar shorts as part of a promo with AMEX back then. The shorts were available in flat and scope and in Dolby A Stereo. [thumbsup]

In San Diego (well, La Jolla, actually), "Knick Knack" was shown in twin-projector Polaroid 3-D on selected nights for the 1990 Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation. Boy, was that a treat! [Big Grin]

Given this recent development, I wonder if that 3-D print still exists...

I posted an image of the original film under "Finding Nemo" in the reviews section. In addition to the fact that the femails don't have breasts, they are also wearing more in the new version. In the original, the first girl's top was a blue line that looked as if they were holding the breasts to her chest. The second girl was topless, with the exception of two strategicly placed starfish.

I have the original short, but I don't think it would be a good idea to post it due to copywrite violations. I might digitize a few frames from it though.

Whoever made the decision to "clean up" the short: What a sick mind he must have! In the 1950s, many classic comic books (like PRINCE VALIANT) were censored over here in Germany, and they painted out all the female breasts. [Eek!]

Maybe these brilliant Disney people should look in their vaults for the pornographic animation scenes done by the animation staff after the ordeal of the SNOW WHITE production (1937) was over. What a DVD bonus track they would make! [Big Grin]

Eleven years ago I did a double interlock 3D [Cool]

"portable" for a kids fest in Bloomington-Normal IL. I made up a reel with 3 3D cartoons with shows on the half hour. The "Breasticles" in "Knick Knack" caused enough noses to become disjointed that, at the sponsors request, I had to remove the short. I couldn't believe it! It's so innocent in nature. The following week I moved the same show to Peoria IL. And included "Knick Knack" to a much larger audience. The approval was unanimous with zero complaints. Seems the folks in Peoria were more "with it" then the Rubes in the previous town. And yes, it is a superb 3D short. [thumbsup]

Had the breasts not been altered Knick Knack probably would have been rated PG-13. With the breasts altered this short should be rated PG.

The music in Knick Knack is by Bobby McFerrin, famous for his one and only hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy" -- from the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail.
