Dear colleagues.
I received the message below on a radio forum I subscribe to, and upon running the test, found the bug on my system. You may care to run the test to check your own systems.
The virus may tend to cause a windows flag symbol and a ~ to appear on your desktop.

You really should research these things before you go blindly following an email which can be worse than having a virus on your computer in the first place.

This is a hoax jdbgmgr.exe is a legitimate Microsoft file.
Microsoft® Debugger Registrar for Java

Deleting it will not harm your comptuer, unless you intend to do some Java Debugging.

Hoaxes like this get the users themeselves to be a virus. [Roll Eyes]

In general, if you have a popular anti-virus program (Norton, McAfee etc) and you keep it updated then you dont' have much to worry about in the form of viruses.

If ever in doubt about a virus always check
Symantec's Website
or
Trend's Website

Dear Brad and Jason.
Thank you for the information.
The forum referred to is quite reputable, so the people who posted it would have done so in good faith. I will post a comment advising them of it being a hoax.
In reference to viruses, what would in fact cause the symbols I described to keep appearing on my screen? I delete it but it will come back some days later.

Dear Adam.
Thank you for your post re the reappearing symbol on my screen.
When it appears, it consists of the Windows flag symbol with a ~ directly underneath and a - underneath the ~ , like this. ~

I delete it but it reappears again at random times. I sent it to an associate who said he received a copy of entries in my address book.
If you could advise, I would be pleased to hear any results, and when it does appear again will send it onto you.

John, if this is appearing as a shortcut icon on your screen that you can click on, see this page on Symantec's trojan database regarding Trex.Trojan.

If your virus definitions are up to date, this should show up on a full scan.
