Here's a screenshot of my current desktop. You might not be able to discern some of the tiny icons since this was resized down from 1600 X 1200 to a 550 pixel width.

This is all that would fit if I posted a pixel for pixel representation:

I'm not a Duran Duran fan, but I did like the artwork of Pat Nagel enough to scan and vector digitize his "Rio" painting so I could have it on my desktop.

Yes, I think our desktops say a good deal about us. For instance, I'm conservative and like to keep organized. I don't like a lot of icons on the desktop; just the programs I use most-often... and my ol' pal, Hoppy. For the huge graphics files I work with, I try to keep CPU usage to a minimum. The taskbar is limited to bare necessities.

Icons are roughly organized into groups. To avoid clutter on the desktop, I keep lesser-used software accessible only through the "Programs" menu.

I'm a big fan of Nagel too. I have several full-size framed and signed serigraphs of his work including some from the Playboy collection.

Just one quick side note on that. I don't keep a lot of icons on my desktop because I don't like it cluttered. 90% of what I use I keep on the quick launch bar at the bottom of the screen, which also gives me the advantage of only needing one click to use it and being able to start another program if needed without minimizing all the crap I already have on the screen to get to the icons!

A while back I purchased an antique Keystone 35mm toy projector. It came with a few short 100' or so reels of nitrate film, one of which turned out to be a minute or so from the beginning of Robin Hood (1922). The film is extremely worn, with a rain of lines running through both sides of the film. To capture this image, I selected my favorite frame -- two rather dopey looking Norman guards outside the castle with great looks on their faces -- and cleaned both sides of the frame with Filmguard. I wiped both sides to wet them, waited a minute or so, then wiped off the dirt-saturated filmguard, wiped on a fresh coat, and scanned the image on a Primefilm 1800 scanner. All the scratches disappeared, except for two thin emulsion lines, which I easily cleaned up in Photoshop. I photoshopped in a vignette to create a black area around the edges for my icons, and removed a few dust specks. Here's a closeup of the center, at full screen resolution:

Phil, I agree it is a terrible shame Pat Nagel died at such a young age. He was only 38 when he died of a heart attack.

Several friends of mine have copies of my digitized Pat Nagel "Rio" desktop. If anyone is interested in it, I can e-mail over a copy. Just let me know what desktop resolution you need (1600 X 1200, 1280 X 1024, etc.).

I used the GIF format for the desktop file since it more efficient at compressing solid areas of color while maintaining sharpness of detail (JPEG really sucks at that). Windows users must have active desktop enabled to use the GIF as wallpaper. I'm not sure what MacOS X demands to use a GIF as a wallpaper image. If you really have to have another file format, I can send a BMP file, but it will be quite a bit larger in file size.

Too bad you can post SWF Flash based images into these forums. Since the native "Rio" digitization is in vector form, Flash is really where it will look the best.

Mac OS X can use anything for wallpaper I believe. It really likes PICT though (without compression).

Adam, Fruityloops does not rule, unless all you want to do are trance mixes. John has Fruityloops on his desktop.

"Jaguar" is what Apple calls one of it's Mac OS X's. They have a whole bunch of cat names for all the different Mac OS X's and it gets confusing and is rather stupid. "Jaguar" is also a horrible horrible videogame system from Atari that failed miserably, hence why Apple wants to name an OS after it. Trust me, you are better off with OS 9 than with OS X!

The differences in OS X 10.1.5 and 10.2 "Jaguar" are like the difference between the various service packs we saw for Windows NT 4.0. Certain kinds of software will work in various stages of the OS while others demand "Jaguar." They're probably unfortunate yet necessary growing pains for this new OS. It is inconvenient, but it is better for Apple to fix various kinks rather than pull a "Macromedia" and just let the bugs sit there until the next full version release (I really hate Freehand for that).

To give one example of what this does, there are three different Quicktime installers on Apple's website for Quicktime 6. The Classic OS 9.x has to use the 6.03 installer. OS 10.1.5 has to use the 6.1 installer and 6.3 will run on OS 10.2 and "later". I only found this out from filling out the licensing paperwork to include Quicktime installers on a promotional CD our sign company is putting together. I think it is kind of funny how only one installer is required for Windows (good for Win98 to XP Pro).

Yes, Czar Nicholas II commissioned a photographer to inventory the architecture, lanscapes and varied peoples of his empire.
A good portion of the collection is preserved on a Library of Congress website, from which I downloaded this one. Many of the restored plates are quite extraordinary. I especially like those of ethnic groups and people at work.
I don't remember the color process used, but I think the chemistry was developed by the photographer, and reminds me of
the Lumiere process. Long before Kodachrome!

Amazing images! Now you know why Kodak still recommends that B&W separations be part of any plan for long term preservation of color films:

(As Robert Harris mentioned, it is very important to "proof" separations before they go to the vault.)

Properly processed and stored, master positives and duplicate negatives made on Kodak VISION Color Intermediate Film 2242 are an excellent choice when more convenient color film elements are part of the long-term preservation plan:

Classic view changes everything back to the original including the login screen. Mine is like the old Windows 2000 login. Fast and simple.

Thats my current desktop at the moment but I change the backrounds every so often to "spice" things up a little. Thats Windows XP in classic mode.

There is a fantastic freeware program called "Print Screen". It is fucking amazing. You simply press the Print Screen button and it captures the screen to your clipboard, just like magic! You can paste the image from your clipboard into just about any graphical editing program like Photoshop, Paint, or other such nonsense.

I think you've got mapped drives pointing at a machine called 'Conan'. Andy Richter was Conan O'Brien's (Late Night) side-kick for years. It's the show that is just ending when you get home from work... if you get out of the theatre early.

I don't have that many machines that &C. Even in the list above movies and the movie industry wins out.

Daryl, yes there is a mapped drive called Conan as in Barbarian, not O'Brien. We used to have an employee who liked to name our computers with rather odd names. Our internet sharing computer was called Persephone. Why? Beats me.

Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She was the goddess of springtime and, after her abduction by Hades she became his wife and Queen of the underworld for six months of each year.

When I access my clipboard after Print Screen, I can't do anything but save it. If I save it all I can save it as are .clp or ynder all files. I don't know what to do to get it to paint or to resize it or anything like that.

Press Print Screen. Open Paint. Select Paste from the edit menu (I assume... I've never messed with paint). You may have to create a new empty image with the exact resolution of your screen before you paste the image. Then be sure to resize it down to 550 pixels wide.[av=v]

Paint only saves images in bitmaps, which is useless for this purpose since I didn't allow bitmaps. You can also only resize in percentages, so thinking is involved.

FInally decided to attempt the capture/resize method ising Photoshop. Worked really well, and was quite simple actually.

I wish I had more time to spend playing with and developing skills in Photoshop... it seems like such a powerful program.

Anyway, this is supposedly an imagine captured of Hurrican Isabel from soem sort of cargo/transport ship.

IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP.

Irfanview is, in fact, a freeware viewer program, similar to ACDSEE. It's free and it's easy to use, so I use it.

Michael... The member photo was taken in Nov. 1994. According to my calculations, that equates to a period of, umm, 10 years, not 25. Thanks for trying.

I opened up every application I had in the dock plus a whole bunch of Finder folders FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WHATSOEVER and pressed F9 which fits everything onto the screen at once. You can then mouseover and choose which one you want (the name of the item appears during the mouseover). Fun!

You're definitely using Windows. You can tell by the icon fonts, the dock looks kind of crappy and chunky, the menus at the top of the screen have one letter underlined just like Windows (stupid), you have PowerDVD, and you have Doom 3 (Mac is not for games, it's for kicking ass).

Will Power turned me on to the Mac skin for Windows a while back, but I didn't care much for it. If I want to pretend I'm using a Mac, I'll use the actual Mac. When I am using Windows, I prefer for it to behave like Windows. That way I know what to expect. [Smile]

It's a combination of software from www.stardock.com . You can try it all out, but to unlock certain features for the main one, WindowBlinds, you have to buy it, or just know the right spots on the internet. [Big Grin]

The cool thing about the programs is that you can get more than Mac skins, but all kinds of wild stuff. It's pretty cool how much these programs let you change the windows desktop.

One other program you'll need is called Y's Shadow, which gives the windows, taskbar, etc. a drop shadow. Even if you just run a regular Windows look, this program makes it all look very slick. Just Google for Y's Shadow and you'll find it.

Some security related advice:

Its best to take any and all security related programs and remove them from the main desktop pic- unless you are the single user of the computer- AND the only one who will be seeing this screen. Take all of those desktop security icons and place them in the admin files or burry them somewhere else under a different name or even a different icon. Otherwise its just too easy to bypass ones security within about thirty seconds.

Also if one advertises ones security as being by Norton (as an example), then its considerable easier to figure out a way to bypass any and all security features- without having having physical access to the computer.

More about the thirty second thing. If you happen to leave your computer unattended for even thirty seconds- thats all it takes to make even the best of computers into a very large desktop paperweight. Best to lockdown whenever possible (electronically and even physically when possible)- unless you really trust someone who: may also have access to your computer; and all of the time, effort, and money it would take to replace the data on it.

The general layout is essentially a webpage using basic HTML and CSS. The search bars are javascript, and the CPU gauges is a free program called "rainmeter" that I reskinned to fit the layout. I forgot to mention there's also a small (basic function) javascript calculator on there as well. It works pretty well except I have a URL bar that is supposed to bring up firefox with the webpage... but instead it makes the page my background [Roll Eyes]

Here's what I just loaded on my Dell notebook:

We had some pretty hellacious thunderstorms today. The first round of storms fired up on the east side of Lawton. Tornado sirens sounded. The funnel touched down a few miles east of the city. The town of Marlow got some serious damage and much of the place is still without power as of this writing. More severe storms developed later.

To explain the photo, it is a shot of the sunset lighting up the underside of a severe storm's anvil. These are really bubbly cumulonimbus "mama" clouds. This is a cool image, but the single CCD in my digital still camera did not do the actual image's color any justice. The levels of yellow and orange I saw in this cloud were very intense.

I thought it was possible to switch the Windows clock back and forth between 24-hour and 12-hour clocks. Maybe that was possible in a previous version of Windows. Now MS apparently agrees 24 hour clocks are retarded.

$250,000,000 of your tax dollars at work. Little difficult to see all the detail with the 1680 X 1050 image dropped down to a 550 pixel width. Anyway, that's the five level interchange of I-635 (LBJ Freeway) and US-75 (N. Central Expwy) in north Dallas -nicknamed the "Dallas High Five". Construction is nearly complete -a year ahead of schedule. I can't stand all the strange "dry" counties and other odd drinking regulations there. But the superhighways are pretty cool. "Texas U-Turns" at freeway exits are great. Every state should have them.

Are you talking about the pillar shape around the base or at top where it supports the roadways? Most of them taper out at angles at the top. What I think is odd looking is the paint scheme applied to various piers. Some are olive green, some are burgundy and others are a kind of yellow-ish drive-it color. Certainly isn't my taste. One nice visual touch is the embossed star on each pillar. I think the High Five was first to do that, but now other large interchange projects in Texas are copying that as well.

The only downside is new construction ordeals will emerge farther west on LBJ Freeway. The end goal is for LBJ Frwy to have 3 HOV lanes for both directions on the entire length of I-635 (from Grapevine to Mesquite). It's going to be really fun when they deep bore tunnel under the existing freeway around Webb Chapel to put the HOV lanes under ground. The first plan was the stack the HOV lanes above the existing freeway, which would have cost less. But NIMBYs whined about it. So now Texas will have its own "big dig" to do. At least it's not near an ocean or harbor.

You can use Apple + Shift + 3 to take a screenshot of the entire screen, or press 4 instead of 3 to get a crosshair so you can choose which part of the screen you'd like to capture. Use Grab only to set the format you'd like the screenshots saved in, then never open it again.

Or you can type CMD-SHIFT-4 then tap the space bar. Your cross hair cursor will turn into the icon of a camera. When you move your camera-cursor over a menu or window or any other item it will highlight. When you click your mouse button it will take a picture of just the highlighted item.

There's all kinds of tricky little stuff you can do in OS X. [Smile]

Interestingly, Mac OSX will not let you run Grab while playing a DVD, and DVD Player provides no capture functionality. PowerDVD has that option right in the preferences of this playback software - to capture images and save them as BMP's

You just find a scene, put the player on pause, on the player interface, you see the image of a 'still camera'. You click on this and this scene on the monitor is captured as the BMP in the directory assigned for capturing images.

I took this photo at the park not far from my house. All the white stuff on the ground...that's not snow. It's ice. All of it. Freaking ice storm from hell. Made for some nice photos though.

On similar lines (pun weak but intended) to Mike's, but a slightly different type of vehicle:

A McDonnell Douglas DC10-30, the last production model to be built (in 1988), parked at Amsterdam Airport on the morning of 29 November 2005, shortly before I flew on it to Memphis. Northwest have since replaced them with A330s. The A330s give a much quieter and smoother ride and have much sleeker lines, but somehow lack that Austin Powers/1970s/retro chic look! The picture was taken on Kodachrome 64 with a Nikon F75, 70-300 lens with a polarising filter on it (shooting through a window). It was quite a long exposure as I remember - had to balance the camera on a plant stand. A security guard nearby looked at me most oddly!

Last month I had the Ansel Adams picture of the Hindenburg flying over Hartford on my desktop (the one with its nose emerging through the fog with the skyscrapers in the background), but accidentally deleted it and can't remember where I downloaded it from...

I always liked flying in the DC10. When I was a young man, while working for ABC news, I was lucky and thrilled to pilot one.

I did really well...except when landing. Unfortunately, I landed 40ft below the runway surface and killed everyone on board. [Frown]

Oh, Ummmm... I was flying the AA simulator in Texas. [Razz]

Spring has sprung in SW OK. Lots of things blooming. Especially Bradford Pear trees. Took this photo today in front of the Comanche County Courthouse (coworkers were installing new building letters).

A large f/2.8 aperture is handy for throwing the background out of focus. It also works well for getting your frame speed up to very fast rates, like 1/2000 sec. That can be handy when you're shooting a near macro shot of flowers...and then freaking out when bees get after you!

Considering the fact many serial killers start off with torturing and killing domestic animals like dogs and cats, I think it's good thing that invention gig worked out for Thomas Edison!

"Murderous Mary"

On September 11, 1916 a hotel worker named Red Eldridge was hired as an assistant elephant trainer by the circus. On the evening of September 12 he was killed by Mary in Kingsport, Tennessee while taking her to a nearby pond to splash and drink.

There are several accounts of his death but the most widely accepted version is that he prodded her behind the ear with a hook after she reached down to nibble on a watermelon rind. She went into a rage, snatched Eldridge with her trunk, threw him against a drink stand and deliberately crushed his head with her foot. Most accounts indicate that she calmed down afterward and didn't charge the onlookers, who began chanting, "Kill the elephant!"

She was impounded by the local sheriff, and the leaders of several nearby towns threatened not to allow the circus to visit if Mary was included. The circus owner, Charlie Sparks, reluctantly decided that the only way to quickly resolve the potentially ruinous situation was to kill the elephant in public. On the following day, a foggy and rainy September 13, 1916, she was transported by rail to Erwin, Tennessee where a crowd of over 2500 people (including most of the town's children) assembled in the Clinchfield railroad yard.

The elephant was hanged by the neck from a railcar-mounted industrial crane.

Although the authenticity of a widely distributed (and heavily retouched) photo of her death was disputed years later by Argosy magazine, other photographs taken during the incident confirm its provenance.]
