What's the difference between a Geek and a Nerd
to my way of thinking they are the same thing. Do geeks like to be called geeks? How about nerds?
My repair company on Newport is called Computer Geeks.
Please educate me.

Linkage!
quote:
Geeks
From the Jargon File entry for "geek":
"A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia. Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves - and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard `hacker' as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed."
Nerds
From the Jargon File entry for "nerd":
"Pejorative applied to anyone with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary social rituals."

Bob, to help you understand the differences, I will give you some examples....
Daryl = God of all computers
Brad = cool guy
Phil = dork, geek and dweeb combined
I hope that helps!

I thought a Nerd eats "Cheetos" and a Geek eats "Doritos."
They are related to "Buttholes"...and they suck canal water.
Shit! I'm gonna get flamed on this one.....

I have always considered that social skills decrease and technical skills increase as you move from "normal" to dweeb to dork to nerd to geek. However these titles can only really be bestowed by others. Anyone who says "i'm going to be a geek" can only ever be a poser.
Some friends of mine insist that to be considered a geek you must be able to write code, but I do not subscribe to this theory (mostly because my coding skills are very very rusty.)

Why do I always have to bite the heads off chickens!?!
Anyway, while we're defining things:
jackass = Phil Hill

Does the difference have anything to do with which side of your shirt your pocket protector (and pens) is/are on?
My own description: Ran the projector at school, did lots of science projects, and dabbled with electricity, was a loner with few friends. Had thick THICK glasses that caused problems with the bridge of my nose. Thick glasses are heavy. I never wore a pocket protector, but DID have a load of pens, etc.
I was a GEEK. The term NERD came along (here, anyway) when "Happy Days" started airing on TV. I stopped being a total geek about this time. I got my first contact lenses, and discovered that I had a knack for working on cars. I'll always be a closeted geek. I know my own feelings.

What if you like both???

Daryl = Geek
Brad = Nerd
Phil = Cool Guy
I'm glad for once I was kept out of Phil's dorky analogies!
Phil = Dork

I think I started out as a nerd, and became a geek.
Posted by Paul G. Thompson (Member # 655) on 07-04-2003, 01:05 PM:
Rachael, I think they are called dweebs.
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 07-04-2003, 02:05 PM:
Hey Rach, you equate me to a dork? I'm NOT the one who had a picture here with bubbles emanating from God knows where....AND BTW, just what WERE you doing in that bathtub?
(There! Happy now?)

What is a dweeb?
Posted by Rachel Gilardi (Member # 1016) on 07-04-2003, 03:30 PM:
Excuse me Mr. Robot man, too bad you don't have muscles like that in real life!!! Dork...

Excuse me Ms. Bubbles.... I have 12" of muscle where it COUNTS, but I don't use it as a RULE!
My "armor" is to fend off all the crap you, Brad, and Daryl (and others) give me!
Brad: Thanks for nothing...OHHHH!!!! YOU F*CKING JERK!
I just NOW saw YOUR changes to MY above post!!!!!! I am appalled and dismayed at your misuse of your GOD power as moderator on... Ummm your system! The LEAST you could have done was to leave MY post as I intended and then edit in your comments/changes!
Again, I am shocked at such a blatant display of abuse of power. What next? Are you going to run for a government office where you can use your sick and demented quest for power? I'm SURE you would make a great DMV clerk or a building-code inspector! They don't know what the hell they're doing either!
For those that have not had the honor to read my original post, it is as follows:
Daryl = Geek
Brad = Nerd
Phil = Loser
(DON'T F*CK WITH ME!!!)
Paul: While I find you definitions interesting, I think we ALL know the REAL meaning of a DORK is someone who farts in the bathtub and then breaks, or bites the bubbles to enjoy the aroma….but thanks anyways for the info....

[edited by moderator]
Hmmmm... OK Mr. Moderator Brad, I see you DID f*ck with MY post AGAIN! Just to set the record straight, I will post the CORRECT definitions AGAIN!
Daryl = Geek
Brad = Nerd, Jerk, Loser, Ass-wipe, Dweeb, Dork, Geek, and of course… MODERATOR!
Phil = Cool Guy, Witty, Generous, Great Lover, Cute, Rich, Sexual, Likes to Cuddle, and just generally Smells Good ALL over except when he isn't in the land of make believe.
I will post this thread to my "Phil's SeXXX Den" website.
http://www.philsexxxden.com
just to make sure Mr. Film-Tech Moderator cannot change the REAL and TRUE meanings.

Interesting, as I did not even have to edit your above post, yet you still typed "[edited by moderator]" on it! Thanks for saving me the effort.

Yeah, Right, Sure, Brad. OBTW: What are YOU smokin' in Rockwall?

It's not on your site yet Phil. Your website sucks! You should be fully dedicated to the upkeep of your site 27 hours per day, each day! You should also respond to every bitchy email you receive within 6.3 seconds from the time it was sent, not from the time you received it!
loser
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 07-05-2003, 02:43 AM:
Hey BUB!
I am tired of having Bob Maar give you $400 a month to maintain my website and have it all turn to sh!t!
SO! Do NOT pick on me for your un-timely and out-moded responses!
OBTW: Here in the US, we have 24 hrs a day...don't know what the hell yous are smokin' up there to git 27!
("Git" a LA term, right Sam?)
Love,
>>>Phil
Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 07-05-2003, 03:03 AM:
Dear loser,
Mr. Maar's account is grossly overdue. Please have your account settled immediately, or I will be forced to send my doormen to collect.
You know, I would also settle for a Neumade splicer and/or a Goldberg platter reel (WITH or without carrying case).
BTW, I don't have enough time to get things done when working on a 24 hour day... 27 hours is a little better.
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 07-05-2003, 03:17 AM:
Dear Ass-wipe Jr.,
I modified MY website myself, since YOU seem to be not capable nor a responsible person to do some simple coding.
As far as Mr. Maartini's account being overdue, please don't talk to me about it... you've obviously mistook me for someone who gives a sh!t!
Your doorman don't give me a wrinkle, they are a bunch of puffs.
>>> Phil
Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 07-05-2003, 03:23 AM:
Dear Mr. Tart,
You'll be no match for my puff's, aka doormen. They seem to enjoy throwing drunken cottagers out onto their faces, onto the sidewalk. You'll all get along well.
As for your wimpy little website... your age verification system doesn't seem to be working to well. I guess it lets you in only because you are obviously very very very very very, really really really really old.
Have a nice day.
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 07-05-2003, 03:40 AM:
Dear Ms. Full-Of-Himself,
You are 100% right... I will enjoy throwing out drunken losers...your doorman puffs and I can fend off anything!
I have thrown out many drunk losers at the Gentleman's Club in West Fargo. The underage ones, I have taken home to sleep it off.
As far as my website's age verification system... It is not based on age but rather on the geek scale. Hmmm...It seems that you cannot get on there cuz of your score....too geek!
OBTW: You should run your posts thru spellcheck before you post. It would have caught all those repeated words...

Posted by Rachel Gilardi (Member # 1016) on 07-05-2003, 10:49 AM:
The two of you are proving your true geekness just by having this conversation!
As for you Phil... Screw your pink berber and give me my shag back!!!!
Don't pick on Daryl just because he can't do simple coding, everyone has their faults.

How did I get draged into this frey? When I receive an invoice that is legit it is paid within three days. I am to busy posting
jokes for the enjoyment of all film-tech members. When I am not posting I am drinking beefeater gin martini's. So Please keep the fighting to a minimum or.
I may get angry! and have you eliminated by Joe.

Legitimate invoice is in the mail. Oddly enough, it is for the same amount as the list price for a 35-SS and comes with a P.O. for the same.
I guess you might as well just ship out the splicer now to save time.
