We're having a tall ships event in Chicago this coming week and all the official use of the term (fliers, web site ) indicates the term is a registered trademark. A visit to the Patent and Trademark Office confirms ownership by the American Sail Training Association.

So the question is, if anyone can remember, was this a common term which somehow the gub'ment has allowed to be privatized or did these folks invent and promote the term which has gradually become commonplace.
