As you read this, do you "hear" a voice in your head or do you just see the words?

If so, is it your own voice?

How do you process printed words and thoughts?

I hear my own voice when I read to myself. I also hear my own voice when I think to myself.

There are other voices, but I try to ignore them most of the time.

Like Adam, I usually hear my own voice when I read or consciously think about something. But when reading dialog I hear voices other than mine.

I hear myself as I read and think. Damn my voice is annoying! Actually it's not *quite* my voice but it seems as if it is. Weird. Very hard to explain, but I do "hear" it. Well actually I can't read at all (but I can write) so I don't hear my voice then. I just see the funny symbols that literate people convert to meaningful linear information automatically.

I hear people`s voices rather than my own when I read their posts. When I do not know the voice, I automatically "make up" one which I think matches the picture.

I hear myself when I read generic text. The only exception to this is when I am reading posts from people I know. For example, if I am reading posts from Joe, I automatically add his sense of humor to the text and his sarcasm. If I am reading Phil's posts, I automatically add his perverseness to them. If I am reading Michael's posts, I slur my speech and sound completely slamhammered drunk like he was at ShoWest. [Wink]

I've never thought of this before, but I "hear" my own voice unless I know the voice of the person who wrote the text, then I "hear" them reading it to me.

Interesting question... Like Mike, for people I personally don't know, I tend to make one up based on what the pic is or what "I think" they look like based on their posts.

For general reading like a J.R.R. book, I "hear" the characters in the voice as I imagine it would be.

For people I know, I hear their words in their own voice.

I hear Mike as Brad mentioned. I hear Brad in his high-pitched "girlie" voice, etc.

Unless I am reading out loud I don't hear any voice when I read.

When I am reading whether it be for work or pleasure there is usually a CD playing in the background and that is all I hear.

I've never thought about this before. The voice I hear "reading the text to me" varies. It is sometimes my voice, a friend's voice (especially if it is an email from a friend), or a teacher's voice, or sometimes just a random voice.

This also makes me wonder if those of you who do not hear a voice when reading read any faster than the rest of us? I would think that you can only hear yourself reading as fast as you could actually speak.

Adam, I can read pretty damn fast when I want to and nothing seems to change as far as the "voices" go. I seem to "hear" as I write as well. This is freaky. Make it stop!

I normally don't 'hear' anything when I read. Unless I'm reading really slowly, then I hear stuff.

Learning how to block out 'internal voices' will allow you to read many many times faster.
