I'd forgotten about this one, which folks here may like:

quote:
Often enough, in those days, I found a fitness in the lines of Omar:

We are no other than a moving show
Of Magic Shadow-shapes that come and go
Round with the Sun-illumined Lantern held
In Midnight by the Master of the Show.

It's a little over-romaticized for my taste; I still like Gordon McLeod's stuff better.

"I may be drunk but you are ugly. Tommorrow I'll be sober but you'll still be ugly."
-Winston Churchill to Bessie Badcock (or was it Babcock?), a socialist member of parlaiment he didn't particularily like

"Sir, you are drunk"
"Madam, you are ugly, and in the morning I shall be sober"

and

"Sir, if you were my husband I would put poison in your drink"
"Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it"

Allegedly said by Wnston Churchill and Bessie Braddock (British Labour Party Member of Parliament for Liverpool Exchange, and a rather formidible looking woman).

Whether it really was said, I don't know.

Edit.

Dustin, you beat me to it, your post came in while I was still writing mine.

There are some pictures of Mrs. Braddock here She was famous in her day, but is almost forgotten now. Despite her somewhat fearsome looks, she had a reputation as a kindly person, and I think her rivalry with the p.m. was a friendly one.

Stephen, your's is probably more accurate, I was going off of memory from when I read "Great Political Wit", a book of famous political quotes compiled by Bob Dole.

Some more Churchill:

One day in the lavatory Winston came in to do his business. Clement Atlee, head of the Labour Party and thus a rival of Churchill, was already 'shaking hands with an old friend). Churchill choose a urinal as far away from Atleee as he could get.
Atlee: "Feeling a bit standoffish today, Winston?"
Churchill: "That's right, every time you see something big you want to nationalize it."

Churchill on his time in South Africa
"Because the water was bad we had to drink whiskey. By diligent effort, we learned to like it."

Dustin,

There are many versions; what the actual words were, if it ever was said, I don't know.

I think all of Churchill's quotes really need to be heard in his voice; reading them, or hearing them spoken in another voice, isn't the same.

Another famous one, of course, "Some chicken, some neck." Very effective use of few words.

I've just noticed the name of the elephant at the bottom of the Bessie Braddock page; quite appropriate for a film site!

Leo, I can't remember which George said that, but you've got either the King, or the date wrong, it would have been George V who died in 1937, George VI in 1952.

V died slowly, with announcements on the radio that "The King's life is drawing steadily towards its close" on the radio, every hour I think it was. VI died suddenly while quite young, and the news of his death had to be conveyed to the new Queen who was out of the Country, in Kenya if I remember correctly, at the time.

I think VI died of cancer; I don't know what V died of.
