If anybody here is planning to attend the Toronto International Film Festival this year, I highly recommend you see "The Snow Walker" It is premiering at the Visa Screening Room (aka Elgin Theatre) on 9/11/03 at 9pm, and on again at 12:15pm 9/12/03 at Uptown 2. This film is so good I consider it a privilege to have worked on it. It has also been selected for the Closing Gala at the Vancouver Internation Film Fest on Oct 10.

The Elgin is a classic old vaudiviller theatre (originaly the Leows downtown) with a second vaudviller theatre built on its roof at the same time (the wintergarden)
it is a live venue with a temp Vic8 setup for the festival
The uptown (closing at the end of the festival) was the Leows Uptown and was split into 5 The balcony (#1) 950 seats (THX 70mm) the orchestra spit inot 2 theatres (1 in 70mm)(they both suck) and two stacked above each other on the stage with a seperate enterance called the backstage cinemas

You know, I didn't think the Elgin was a film venue... that explains it. Hopefully they will do a decent job - the cinematography on this one is simply stunning.

The Vancouver screening will be at The Vogue (sorry, the "Visa Screening Room" - must obey corporate overlords) Not sure of the film/not film status there at the moment either - last film I saw there was the first run of Return of the Jedi.

the elgin spent most of it life showing films
built in 1914 and afer converting to sound was predominaently a cinema until as a historical site being sold to the Ontario Heritage society who run it and the wintergarden as stage venues
(Note the sale has a clause about no movies being shown except for the festival)

Elgin Theatre sounds very much like the Vogue.

Vogue is all live now, it closed as a movie house in 1987. No screen in there but they may be able to " fly " one in.

I'm possibly getting in their some time this week to take some photos. I'll ask the caretaker about the setup for the VIFF.
