I have to run my G4 in the classic 9 mode ever since I upgraded to OS X. I even tried the Camino browser but that didn't work. Any one else have this problem, Its a hassle to reboot every time I want to access Film Tech.

WHY do you have to use classic mode?

What, specifically, is the problem with OS X?

Now I prepare no point out firewall issues -- FT requires that the HTTP_REFERER value is sent.

I was under the impression access to film-tech is free.

When you wake up to reality, you'll see that nothing is free. [Razz]

Don, does the browser even prompt you to log in? Any new browsers won't know your password and login from another browser.

I have never had a problem with Camino, Mozilla, or Mozilla Firebird (all based on Gecko)

Safari and OmniWeb (based on Webkit) seem to work as long as I don't use the back button.

If you must use a classic browser Netscape 4.8 is not pretty but can be made to work.

I can access F-T fine using Internet Explorer.

I have contacted both Apple and Brad regarding the back button issue in many other browsers including Safari (which I use to browse everything else)

I use Camino 90% of the time on both my Macs.

I have the same problem as Matt and Mike: When using Safari to access the site the "Back" button doesn't work. Other than that, I have no problem at all.

What, exactly, is the problem getting F.T. to load? Do you have problems with other sites? Which other browsers have you tried? Does Internet Exploder not work, even?

If you like Camino you should check out this one little piece of software: Camino Knight. Get it at the author's Web Page.
Since Camino is in continual development there are nightly updates just about every day. ("Day" defined as a period of 24 hours. [Wink] ) Camino Knight can be used to check for nightly updates and automatically downloads them. It installs the new version, backs up the old version and allows you to revert back to the pervious version if you find problems. It's well worth the price! [Wink]

Also don't forget to repair permissions at least 3 or 4 times a day as Mac OS X requires. OK maybe once a month. [Smile]

You can repair permissions under "Disk Utilities". I am in OS 9 now (like I am 96% of the time, since it is just so much damn faster and less clunky) so I can't tell you exactly how to get to Disk Utility. I think it's Macintosh HD (or whatever your boot drive is called) > Applications > Utilities > Disk Tools??? I dunno. Where ever it is, it's through a maze of other things.

PS - Try highlighting text in OS X (on a web page for instance). Notice the text doesn't change color to stand out so you can read what you've highlighted. LAME! If anyone can get their OS X to do this properly, please post a screenshot with instructions on what you did.

I'm using Mac OSX and Safari and I have the same problem - I can't use the Back Button..this drives me nuts. The site gives me the bookmarking error. This is the ONLY site that I can find that has this problem. I use UBB BBSs on other sites and I don't have that problem.

And as far as I remember, I don' t think Film Tech always had this problem. I think it started after the last BBS upgrade.

As far as highlighting text is concerned, I do not have that problem when actually selecting text (mouse click down). I can highlight text on this site, for example, and it highlights fine. Where I do have a problem with Safari, but not IE, is that on a web page, if you program the HTML to have certain text highlight on mouseover, it doesn't always highlight, or it highlights inconsistently.

I've used Mac OSX since the day it was released. I've had to change permissions a few times on files they don't really want you to delete, but I've never had to repair permissions.

APPLE > System Preferences... > General

Select highlight color from the popup menu.

Yes, Joe, OS X does take a lot of getting used to but... Get used to it! Uncle Steve says you have to! [Big Grin]

Joe wants the text to turn a different colour, like white, when you highlight it... just like Windows. [Smile]

OS 9 does that as well, Daryl. What if a web page were that exact shade of blue (or very similar)? You would have no idea what you were highlighting. It is a flaw built in to Mac OS X.

Martin, it is always a good idea to repair permissions. Lots of people do it anytime after they install something. Usually when someone has a problem with OS X, the first question asked is "Did you repair disk permissions?" I, too, thought it couldn't affect much, but apparently it does. Unix is crazy that way I guess. I also really LOVE the way you can't install apps on any other drive except the boot drive.

I am in OS X right now (playing with Final Cut Pro 4's scopes) and the correct path is Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Launch it and click the first aid tab. It is always a bad idea to repair permissions from a bootable CD, because they will be out of date. Also I'd recommend getting Disk Warrior. It's great. Mine boots into OS 9 and repairs any problems with the disks and also defragments. If your computer can not boot into OS 9, then you will be forced to get the newest version of Disk Warrior which boots into OS X, but does not offer defragmentation.

Do any of you programmer-types know why Safari doesn't work with Film-Tech?

Posted by Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Member # 1303) on 09-16-2003, 08:22 PM:

Yes - probably.

To be more specific I'd have to know what doesn't work about it or what errors you get, etc.

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 09-17-2003, 02:36 AM:

It's that whole HTTP referrer thing. I'm not sure how Safari and Camino work, but when you press the BACK button, Film-Tech sees it as if the browser was trying to go straight to that page from some other site instead of directly from Film-Tech. Film-Tech will only allow you to gain entry from the main page (unless...) and you get the NO BOOKMARKING 404 error otherwise.

Write them and complain that their java engine doesn't work right.

Forward and back actions have nothing to do with the HTTP_REFERER, btw.

Daryl: You're killing me here!

Is there something specific you'd like me to tell them or will "java engine not working right" suffice [Wink]

C'mon guys...throw me a fricking bone here...tell me what to tell them. This is a classic call for some cut-and-paste action.

I'm beggin' you. Do you need me to get down on my knees???

HTML and XHTML web pages generally control text and highlight colors within the page, not the OS.
Example:
A:link { text-decoration: none; color: #a5d8ff; }
A:visited { text-decoration: none; color: #6587ac; }
A:hover { text-decoration: underline; color: #FFFFFF; background: #7597b3; }

Sometimes you get the no bookmarks warning, and sometimes it just dumps you back to the main page. It seems to be random, but the behaviour is common to all browsers that use Apple's Web Core html rendering engine. Web Core is based on the khtml engine from the kde desktop environment for linux. I dont have access to a kde linux rig at the moment but it would be interesting to know if the same thing happens there. Anyone read film-tech in konquerer?

Daryl, in this case the HTTP_REFERRER does indeed have something to do with those buttons. Or why else would we get the 404 page when we used it? I guarantee you my life if you got rid of it, the problem would go away. The Java works better in Safari and Camino than it does in the Windows version of Opera.

Martin, that is not true. You are talking about hyperlinks, not general text. And yes, it is the OS that changes the text color so you can read it when you highlight it. Again it is a flaw in the Mac OS, one they could change with probably one new (short) line of code. Apple is just too lazy.

Check it out:

Mac OS X can't even do THAT!

Manny, I'm sure the decision to stray from spec was a conscious decision of the developers. Why did they do it? They probably couldn't figure out how to make it work right... or they had some other, possibly valid, reason. Regardless, I seriously doubt that they would act on any suggestion regarding this issue.

However, you could tell them that the browser does not process javascript the same way when you hit the back button as it does when you first load a page. More specifically, certain environment variables (which are available going forward) aren't available / processed when you go backwards.

It's likely that they might not even have control over this, as they probably didn't write their java engine (which may or may not be the cause of the problem). There's a few browsers out there that all exhibit this problem, so I am leaning towards it being a third-party issue with the engine.

Regardless, I currently have code written to resolve this issue that is currently undergoing performance testing. As soon as I get enough spare time I'll implement it.

Joe, I too guarantee you that it has nothing to do with the HTTP_REFERER (and certainly not the HTTP_REFERRER) since the HTTP_REFERER value is not used to enforce the bookmarking rules.

quote:
A:link { text-decoration: none; color: #a5d8ff; }
A:visited { text-decoration: none; color: #6587ac; }
A:hover { text-decoration: underline; color: #FFFFFF; background: #7597b3; }

That doesn't have much to do directly with HTML, XHTML, DHTML, or whatever other fancy markup language you can find. It's CSS.

BTW, except for the white, those aren't web-safe colours. [Smile]

It can be CSS, but it can also be embedded into each page. I've used it both ways.

But Joe is right..it has nothing to do with text, only links -- that was a stupid error on my part.

However, I've NEVER experienced the problem that Joe is talking about. I suppose I would if the text color was exactly the same as my OS X highlight color, but it's never happened. Joe: are you sure you don't have your highlight color selected as white?

And as for web-safe colors, it's no longer necessary to support them unless you still want to support 8-bit monitors, which haven't been made in years. Fewer than 10% of users have 8-bit monitors and I, for one, am not going to aesthetically impair the sites to support those people. Their computers are so old, that pages probably look like crap anyway -- a little dithering isn't going to make things that much worse.

My highlight color is grey. It is odd that the default is black (which couldn't be a worse choice since most text is black).

PS - The "back" button (and forward) seems to work perfectly fine in Camino. Not so in Safari. Too bad Safari is the default browser, as it is markedly inferior.

Agreed! The only thing I like in Safari that Camino doesn't have is "Snap Back". I think Camino has some way to do a "search bar" but I never use it. I suppose, if I knew how to turn it on I'd use it. It's just as easy, though, to type, "Google" in the URL bar, hit return, type the search terms and hit return.

Safari has a few nice bells and whistles but Camino has just as many and I like it better.

Every time I open up Safari, it defaults to 1/4 to 1/2 way off the screen (usually to the right). What's up with that?
