I know this is proberly no big deal to guys in the USA,

Im in Sydney Australia, our cinema is very close to Sydney harbour, on the north, and the airport is just south of the harbour.

Planes heading for the airport normally pass over us at around 6000ft travelling north to south.

Today I was doing two BAD things.
I was OUTSIDE and I was having a SMOKE.

Then was this rummble of what sounded like a couple of F/A-18's going into afterburner.

When I looked around, it was a grey-blueish 747 coming from the west to east at around 2000ft. A flight path and height Ive never seen a commercial jet take before.

Because it was almost directly above I could only see the underbelly and not make out any fin or fuselage markings.

Im convinced it was The Presidents backup plane or even AIR FORCE ONE itself, even though George W Bush is not due here until Wednesday. (This happened Sat Oct 18th)

Anyway, that made my day, I thought it was pretty cool.

Anyone know if it could have been the spare plane coming in early prior the the Presidents visit?

It just strikes me strange that Ive never seen a 747 (let alone one that looks like AF1) that low and heading on flight path that Ive never seen before.

Bill.

Minor nitpick point: "Air Force One" is the radio identification for any aircraft which happens to be carrying the US president at any given time. It's not a particular aircraft. A Cessna 172 could be "Air Force One" if the president were riding in it.

...except when it's not an USAF aircraft, hence Marine One is the copter that ferries the Office-Stealer from the White House lawn. I presume when they did that PR stunt with the carrier landing that the plane was temporarily Navy One.

When Clinton was in office, Air Force One flew over our office building in Nasville several times. Since we are only about 3-4 miles from the Nashville International Airport our office building is in the direct flight path for every plane that comes into and out of Nashville.

That particular plane (or it's twin) makes a very distictive sound as it fly's over... not like any other plane flying in or out of Nashville. The huge transport plane they fly in to bring the motorcade cars has to be the biggest plane I've ever seen.

Also, since President Bush is in the Phillapines today... I doubt it was him.

Bill,

Most Likely a C-5A Galaxy, part of the advance party for Bushs visit. There was one out and about near Richmond and Canberra yesterday.
