No, not at all! In fact, Polka music was very popular in Wisconsin in the 40's and 50's, into the 60's. It still might be popular now, but not as much.

My uncle "Fritz" played in a Polka band.

Playing an accordion is always a bad idea. It is the Devil`s instrument. When I went to music college, my school was unfortunately 1 of 4 only in Germany where you could study accordion. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah! One of them lived on the floor above my room in the student dormitory. If you live in the dormitory of a music school, you get used to people practicing flute or trumpet next door, after all you practice in your room too. But having to listen to the accordion all Sunday afternoon was simply too gross.

After growing up in Wisconsin, I can honestly say that I hate polka music! [Smile]

Every time I would get in the car, go to a gathering or even a high school graduation, polka would be my torture! People that think “all polka is the same” are terribly wrong, there are so many types of crappy polka out there! Now the only polka I enjoy is the Weird Al parodies! [Smile]

Yeah...sometimes Uncle Fritz was on the "fritz" with his accordian. The more blood he got in his Alcohol stream, the better he was. [Smile]

He also taught playing the accordian. My dad was quite good on it. Even had his own. I never learned how to play one. It had too many buttons and required some cordination...something I really didn't have. [Smile]

Actually, the Hispanic music features alot of music that sounds like an accordian. [Smile]

I love polka! My father's side of the family is Czech and I didn't go to single reunion or wedding that didn't have a polka band playing in the hall. Admittedly, it took some time to grow on me, but hearing an accordian instantly makes me feel like a kid again.

I'm Scotch-Irish.

I have an old recording of Lawrence Welk and the orchestra playing the "Dakota Polka," featuring Myron Floren. Good stuff. Very fast and difficult. Floren is allover the accordion keys.

People laugh at the Welk sound today, but back in his day his sound was very popular. I've got many of the early albums,

Lets have a party. Liquor and old Welk albums! Can someone volunteer to be the bartender?

Being of Polish ancestry, I've attended my share of Polish weddings (at least those that I remember [beer]

). My cousin played accordion in a Buffalo NY Polka Band. My father won quite a few polka dancing contests. [thumbsup]

The Beer Barrel Polka was very popular. Of course, that was in Wisconsin...the state where each corner had a church, gasoline station, and a saloon at almost every intersection.

Of course, we were also known for beer, toilet paper and cheese.

There was a polka festival in Billings Montana a couple of weeks ago...one of the events was a Polka Mass. I can only imagine what THAT must have sounded like! (and I'm Catholic!)

There is/was a Polka only radio station located in a town just north of Two Rivers, WI. Last time I was in Manitowoc I had the Polka station playing on the car radio and they were asking for donations for a new transmitter. Donno know what ever happened to it or if they replaced the small transmitter they had....

Mark, that might have been WCUB. They were located on the Lake Shore Highway, not too far from the Lake Vue Drive-in Theatre was.

The only two radio stations I know of in that area for quite a number of years was WOMT and WCUB. I had a job with WCUB when I was 16. I was the remote broadcast technician for the church services of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

WKTL 90.7 FM, Struthers, Ohio is another polka station. Whats interesting about this station is that its operated exclusively by the Struthers City Schools and is staffed by high school students. KTL also broadcasts other ethnic musical selections on Saturday mornings such as Irish, Hispanic, and Big Band.

I grew up listening to polka music, as my dad is a big fan and it was quite a popular station in the barns of many relatives and neighbors. Believe it or not, animals find polka music very soothing and there is a rhythm to the music that makes getting work done just a little bit easier.
