What are some alternative programs for ripping cd's to Sony MD recorders in sp mode . The software sony has created sucks much ass and I need a better way to do this.

I know the frustration you are going through! Sony really messed up BIG TIME by releasing the crap software that ships with their MiniDisc gear. PC to MD transfers are forced down to a measly ATRAC3 LP2 or LP4 encoding, thus SP-mode quality is not available. Even with the "Simple Burner" program that is bundled in the software package, true SP-mode is not possible.

To make things worse, files that are transferred from a PC have to be "checked-in" and forever archived on your HD. Sony is so concerned about people violating the digital rights management agreement, all sound files are compacted into these lower sampling modes.

RealAudio has recently released a plugin for RealOne that enables PC to MD transfers without the stupid "check-in" feature that leaves a bunch of hidden files on your computer's HD. However, it too limits the sound quality to only ATRAC3 LP2.

I suggest that if you are really only interested in SP quality recordings, skip the PC route all together and get yourself a nice MiniDisc deck with x2 TOSLINK optical connections. Then for convenience use the cheap Sony software to organize and title your discs.
