To my knowledge, only NY and LA right now.

I'm looking forward to seeing this, but I'm not sure how big a release it will get. It looks to be a very interesting and original film.

We did a special showing of it at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ on Monday evening, Novenber 24th for our subscribers and donators to the restoration of film at the Basie. Thanks go to Tom Bernard of Sony Classics for getting us the print. I understand it moves to the Clearview Cinema in Red Bank on Friday the 28th

Format seemed to be a bit ambiguous so I went with 1.66 and it looked great although it may well be compatible with 1.85 too.

BTW, the Russian dub SR-D is ridiculously loud. Plays at "3.0" to get normal sound.

I wonder why there was a Russian dub when there is hardly any dialogue? I saw Tripletts of Bellville at the Telluride Film Festival and Sony Classics ran it at Show East as well.

I have no idea. Those few words that was spoken on screen was dubbed, not subtitled... Probably it was considered "not arthousey enough" by the distributor.

I've never seen any kids in the auditorium, though.

Of course, it is not for kids. But since there is no age restriction on this film, I expected to see some youngsters, just because "this is a cartoon, anyway".

Thank you for the confirmation on the 1.66, Elena, as there was no notice with my print. Some platter jockey before me had written "1.85" on it but I know better than to listen to someone who goes through life thinking "Flat" and "Scope"! I neatly labeled the (single) can 1.66 but hedged by suggesting "1.85 acceptable." Now that the same print has returned for another press preview I guess I can block that out. If they don't have 1.66 they will run 1.85 anyway but no point in suggesting it! [Cool]

We sheduled "Les Tripletttes de Belleville" at the Rialto, but in Geneva, Switzerland [Smile]

I cant told You that this cartoon is in 1.66 format (French flat format)
And it was a really nice popular success in French part of Switzerland. I'm surprised that this movie will be diffused in the United States.

But what do You think about this cartoon ?

I found it very refreshing.
The art was in a style I had never seen before.
The protaganists are a grandmother and three old ladies.
The filmmaker likes stereotyping people and uses stereotypes as a joke.
It has a very French 'theatre of the absurd' feeling going for it.

At the Basie, we had no choice but to play it in 1.85, as our print was black matted. Too bad, since it was shot in 1.66.

The DVD comes out in France on Jan.14, 2004 (probably no subtitles). 1- and 2-disc editions, zone 2 so you might need an all-zone player.

I went to see 'Russian Ark' at the Phoenix, East Finchley, this afternoon, and they ran a trailer for something called 'Belleville Rendez-Vous', which is being shown next Sunday for a single matinee screening, and then returns from 26th December for one week. Is this the same film, distributed under a different title over here? It looked interesting, if I don't have to work next Sunday I may go to see it, unless I can find somewhere nearer that's running it.

How well did it do over there?

Yes Steve, it was matted to 1.85. Only four reels and every one was the same. I inspected every one. At least there was no problem with the changeover cues!

Sony Pictures Classics has anglicized the title to The Triplets of Belleville for the US release.

Betsie: Washington DC won't get The Triplets of Belleville until January. Same with Philadelphia and maybe the NYC suburbs. Too much product out there, mainstream and arthouse. This year SPC is pulling a Miramax -- flooding November and December with lots of "Oscar Bait".

Thanks, John. There must be different types of prints. If I screen it again I'll be sure to double check to see if it's hard matted just to 1.66 as before or down to 1.85.

The Triplets of Belleville expands to New Jersey on Boxing Day. The Clairidge Cinema in Montclair and Montgomery Cinema in Rocky Hill are booked for that film per the stack ad in yesterday's Newark Star-Ledger.

We originally ran the film back in November to good houses and are bringing it back for 4 days in late January.

However, as already mentioned in another thread, the BBC have played this very recent release twice over the holiday period both on BBC2 and ,I think,BBC3 so don't know how many punters we'll get this time round.

And yes our print was 1.66:1

As I mentioned in the Feature Info. forum, my print was matted to 1.66. We are running it in that format and it looks good. I think that 1.85 would probably be too "crowded."

I just got a copy of the DVD (Region 1), and it appears Columbia TriStar has elected to present the film in a 1.78:1 ratio.
