If so, and if in Europe - don't miss [URL=www.miniatur-wunderland.de][/URL], which I stumbled into during intermission in an digital projection demo last autumn, and just revisited last week. -It is now 1.600 square meters of HO gauge digitally controlled adventureland (situated in Hamburg), including cars driving around the landscape, fire breaking out and beeing put out by upcoming firedept. and a world of details, incl. one pair of lovemaking youngsters in a wood ! Never seen anything like it !

When I was 10 I was introduced to a pile of "Model Railroader Magazines". I got the bug then and spent hour upon hour drawing and designing model railroad layouts. I got a small set for Christmas that year and wanted to go on with the hobby but could never get my stepfather motivated.
Now they have digital eh?

I might have to look into that hobby again

Today's NYTimes [12/25/03, Circuits section] has an illustrated article on digital model railroading, explaining how the digital remote controls enable the running of multiple trains on the same track (up to 32, with one controller), and comparing it to analog systems, which require separations of circuits, voltages and currents.

The online edition article, "Stoke the Nostalgia, and the Old Rails Keep Humming", is a brief history of model railroading, not especially rewarding, but you have to access it to get to the illustrations and diagrams by clicking on the small box in the right-hand margin entitled "A Different Kind of Local Area Network." Used to have an HO railway that covered a good deal of my parents basement. Later got interested in live steam and old hit and miss gas engines. I live just a few miles from this live steam club....

At my day job we always set up a large layout of O gauge Lionel trains. It grows every year...started in the 1980s at 4x8 feet, and this year it's 36 feet wide and 7 feet deep. We add at least a half dozen pieces to it every year. My wife collects the "North Pole Series" from Department 56 so we have a "North Pole" at one end. It's a lot of fun.

Most live steam engines can be built a section at a time at quite reasonable expense. The only costly thing is the boiler...which has to be certified yearly in most states. When you are done you posess a very valualable engine which would certainly give a HUGE return vs. cost to build. I figure it'll take me at least three years of of what little spare time I have to build it. The Shay is also a much less expensive engine to build than say a 4-6-2 or thereabouts. It is also a bit more practical to move around.

He's got a track that goes all around his yard & has a grand old time giving rides to the neighborhood kids. Bob's been a train man, probably since before there was coal. [Wink] J.K. He used to work at Erie Stoker, making coal stokers for steam boilers.

He tells me about this place called Train Mountain. He wants to take his rig out there before... well, before TOO long. Transportation from Pennsylvania to Oregon with a rig like that is a big issue.

Pretty soon, this locomotive is going to need a good home. I'd like to see it find a home with somebody who would appreciate it.

Randy didn't mention it but his locale of Erie, PA is the home of General Electric Transportation Systems, the major USA builder of diesel locomotives since GM shifted final assembly for its Electro Motive Division from outside Chicago to London, ON. The LaGrange, IL (mailing address; it's actually in McCook.) plant still builds the diesel engines, the alternators, traction motors, and assembles the electrical cabinets. Body components were being trucked from Super Steel Milwaukee but I haven't seen them on the highway for awhile so don't know if that is still true.

I haven't been a modeler since I was a kid (although a nearbye shelf holds HO F7A & F7B models I picked up at a hamfest) but I am very much a train buff in terms of reading, watching, photography etc. I continue to build my collection of TRAINS magazines which is pretty much solid from '53 forward; filling in the 1940's and early 50's now.

Well, -I'll stay with the HO - 16,5mm gauge - and the 2m (Lehmann) on stage at christmas time sometimes (not this year - just a giant Baloo with a red hat)

The size 2m was by the way quite impressive as extras in the London Theatre (donøt remember the name) doing the "Starlight Express. -Those little train were all over the auditorium - under the ceiling - at the edge of the balconys....

Small is beautiful, a friendly journalist once wrote, writing about the CinemaxX 8-plex compared with my little flea circus.

My Dad has an HO setup. He doesn't use the pre-assembled track, but lays each tie down by hand. It's something like 40x30 feet big. Been working on it in his spare time for years. Even things like this tressle (below) is built one piece at a time.

I have an extensive collection of HO scale trains. I model primarily the Mopac and SP systems in the Central/South Texas region during the Mid 70's era. Do not have a current layout up, but do have plenty of Locomotives and rolling stock for the roads and era modeling. One thing I do miss from the Model Railroading scene is the N&G railways SP Lower Qudrant Semaphore Signals. Where is Paul Lubliner these days? We need to talk him into reproducing these nice models.

Brad I never knew your grew up around a model railroad. You Dad's layout looks Fantastic. Does he belong to the NMRA? and has he started working towards his MMR certificate?

I did a cinema in a small southern Georgia town for a Jeweler by the name of Thompson in the late 1970's. He had built a new house on his property and converted his old home into a "train house" with cities, towns, countryside running through all the rooms of the house. He had three different lines operating at once...the cinema was his new "toy" which he ran for many years.
Didn't Disney and some of his staff have backyard train outfits? I have HO cars of a company I worked for as a teenager in my office.

It was Ward Kimball who inspired Disney to construct the Steam Trains that run at Disneyland. If I'm not mistaken he also supervised the construction of them as well.

Mark, Ward Kimball's Mogul and coach from the Eureka & Palisade were donated to the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, CA. Ward also kindly donated Disney stock shares which paid for a barn and turntable to be constructed there. OERM is well worth a visit.

In 1984, a comedy titled "Chattanooga Choo Choo" was filmed at Ward's estate in San Gabriel, and featured his 0-4-0T "Chloe" and one of his open bench cars patterned after the Disneyland horse cars. The closing scenes were filmed at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. CSRM is also well worth a visit.

When you're down my way, let's talk live steam. I am rebuilding a 1.5" scale Mogul.

Great subject!

I've been into railroading since I was allowed to play with my parents' 1948 Louis Marx O-27 set (which I still have, and it runs fine!) From there I got into HO and collected far too much stuff, as most of us do.

I'm also into 1:1 steam. I joined NJ Museum of Transportation / Pine Creek RR of Allaire NJ when I was 14 and I'm still active 35 years later! I possess a NJ steam locomotive license, needed to run our equipment. Check Pine Creek out at www.njmt.org

btw, Disneyland's #4, the Ernest S Marsh, originally belonged to Pine Creek. Disney bought it from us in 1957. It was our #1, a 1925 Baldwin 0-4-0 former saddle tanker.

I put on an annual model train show in Ocean Grove NJ during their Victorian Holiday Celebration in December. I run the old Louis Marx set, a decent portable HO layout I built, and my daughters G-scale LGB set. Also part of the show are Thor Sheil, a Lionel collector and restorer, and Jersey Central N-Trackers, a local club who builds those 2X4 N-scale modules. Very impressive layout, Brad...KUDOS!

Now for some tech talk...

Model railroad radio control (being able to control two trains completely independant of one another on the same layout) was first developed and comerically available in the early 1960's by General Electric and was calld ASTRACK (Automatic Simultaneous Train Control). With the use of todays computer systems, it is now possible to run hundreds of locomotives on the same layout completely independant of one another.

Any serious model railroader should be famaliar with David Sutton's monumental book "The Complete Book of Model Railroading" with a forward by David Rose. Castle Books 1964 Library of Congress 64-21745. This book has ann extensive chapter on ASTRAC.

This book also features several photos of rare Ward Kimball collection pieces.

Probably the best model railroad magazine on the market today is Mainline Modeler. It is fairly easy to purchase used copies of Model Railroader, and a few others, but not so with Mainline, as people tend to hold onto them because of the tech info! The Japanese also have some excellent, but very expensive publications.

As for live steam, there are some damn good magazines on the market, not to mention publications like Home Shop Machinist. Borders and Barnes and Noble stock many of these.

Mark said that live steam is not that expensive? Dont know where he is getting that info from? Some of the comerically available kits are quite pricy and take a lot of work to machine and assemble...many of the kits contain raw castings with blueprints and instructions. For those who are interested, there is a large scale U.P. Challenger available, and I believe that there is one in operation at the live steam parks in the Phoenix area.

Tucson has some excellent NMRA Master Modelers whose work has been featured in numerous national publications. One modeler, Winkler, scratched build an "O" Fine Scale brass 2-6-6-6.

I am a self admitted brass-a-holic. As such, I am very familiar with the several importers, and the quality of their products. As well as the quality of commerically available investment castings for the scratch builder. Rather than posting a lot of info here, feel free to e-mail or p.m. me, and I'll do my best to answer questions.

There's a great book called "Walt Disney's Railroad Story," which covers Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston, Disney's backyard railroad and it's eventual metamorphosis into Disneyland and beyond. Many great illustrations and anecdotes (but no guinea pigs--can't have everything [Wink] ).

Hillary, I have that book. Beware though, as a lot of the story of Disney acquiring (the agent who bought it was the author's father btw) our old 1925 Baldwin 0-4-0 (now Disneyland's #4 2-4-0) has some inaccuracies, and possibly the rest of the book does too. Still, it is quite an interesting story just the same! Model Railroader or RMC recently had an article on Disney's RRs too, mostly his personal home operation.

Be advised 1:1 fans, some of your favorite full-size steam locos may not be running anymore. After the explosion at Gettysburg RR in 1994, and then the steam tractor explosion in Ohio in 2001, the feds got involved in new and tighter inspections of "antique and hobby boilers" (which live steamers are exempt from, so far). If your fave engine doesn't meet specs it ain't gonna run. Repairs have to be done by a certified R-Stamp locomotive boiler shop now (NJMT Pine Creek is a certified R-Stamp shop, info on it can be had at www.njmt.org )

The new regs are tighter in some ways but much more reasonable in others. For example, under the old rules boilers needed to have the tubes pulled every five years of use that a detailed inspection could be done of the boiler shell from the inside. If a boiler was fired up even one day in a given month it counted the same as if it were used all month long. Now it will only count as a day and you can go 1472 operating days (or up to 15 years) between such major inspections. The regs also take into account advances that have been made in such techniques as ultrasonic measurement to determine the thickness of boiler plate.

The Gettysburg accident was due to the crew's not knowing how to properly clear the water level sight glass, thus allowing a low water condition to overheat the crown sheet (roof of the firebox) and failure. Being a Canadian engine, the staybolt pattern allowed it to fail in a way that was not as catestrophic as crown sheet failures usually are. No one died.

I'm reasonably close to Gettysburg and remember the accident. It's a shame that they've been so scared by steam. I think a reproduction American 4-4-0, like those at Promontory Point, with civil war era coaches would be a spectacular attraction for history buffs and railfans alike.

I'm also reasonably close to the Strasburg RR. in Lancaster County. I've had a few cab rides in #89 and could really get into 1:1 scale, if the coal weren't so dirty. Their safety record is superb.

As for the Disney book, ever since reading about Disney's omitting credits of people who went on strike (around 1940?), I take any "history" with a grain of salt. The photos are fantastic, though.

Aren't temperature/pressure relief valves supposed to prevent boiler explosions?

On Bob's engine (the guy in my picture) he has TWO pop-offs. Each is set to a slightly different relief points. One is set slightly above his desired operating pressure. The other is set slightly below his maximum safe pressure. His modus operandi for this is that when the first one goes off his boiler is up to "full steam". If the second one goes off he knows the pressure's getting too high.

When he fires it up, he lets the pressure build until the first pop-off blows. Then he adds a bit of water, stokes the fire and disconnects the blower. After a few more minutes he's ready to roll.

He built it up from a kit and then customized it several times over. It started out as a gasoline powered engine. Then he added a boiler but it was powered by a propane tank. Later he added the coal boiler.

He's got a side track that goes through a "doggie door" into his basement. He rolls it down there and works on it when he's done steaming around the yard. He tells me he cleans the tubes and checks the boiler at least once a year.

This guy just KNOWS his engine. He'll be standing there chatting about something and suddenly he'll turn around and say, "Oh, I've got to check something." After a few moments he's done tinkering and he's ready to take off again. It's a lot like the way a good projectionist works but it still just seems like ESP or something. [Wink]

In the steam era, it is widely recognized that Lima Locomotive Works, who was the smallest among the "Big Three", the other two being Alco and Baldwin, was the most innovative.

On larger locomotives, such as the Alco built U.P. Big Boys and Challengers, there were generally four sight glasses (two for the engineer and two for the fireman) placed at different levels to one another. The problem with sight-glasses is that 1: they can become plugged or 2: being on various graades can cause false readings. As such, an experienced fireman, along with the engineer, needed to be very familiar with their territory and the ability to compensate for these reading changes.

As an added precaution, both Barco and Nathan, and I think Westinghouse (manufacturers of locomotive sub-components) developed low water alarms.

But Lima's and S.P.'s development of the Boiler Drop Plug was by far the best safety device. On the Lima built S.P. G.S. (Golden State/General Service "Daylight" 4-8-4 locomotives, had 5 of these plugs in the firebox crown-sheet.

"The drop plug was developed by F.E. Russell Sr., and was adopted system wide in 1932. They greatly ddiffered from the more common fusable meetal plug. When the water level got too low over the standard fusable metal plug, the heat would melt the fusable metal allowing steam to blow through. The problem was that once the steam rushed through the molten metal, the plug would cool and only a small opening would form, not allowing enough steam through to extinguish the fire. The SP's boiler drop plug consisted of a brass button sweated into a plug body with a mixture of one part tin and eight parts lead. Should the water get too low and the crown sheets too hot,the fusable metal would melt and the brass button would drop out, allowing enough steam to smother the fireand prevent a boiler explosion.

The reliability and effectiveness of these drop plugs was demonstrated many times in actual service. Evidence of its need before it was developed is shown by the fact that the only GS engine to blow up was the 4402 near Richvale, California on January 25, 1931. Cause was a faulty injector and subsequent low water."

Randy, boiler explosions are almost never caused by overpressure for exactly the safety ("pop") valves you mention. A locomotive boiler has a barrel section which is nearly filled with water and is traversed by many small tubes carrying the hot gasses from the firebox at the rear to the smokebox at the front. The firebox itself is double-walled with the space in between filled with water and open into the barrel part of the boiler. The space between varies from several inches around the sides and back to over a foot above.

At the pressures involved (up to 300 psi on some later engines; 200 is more typical) there are 15-20 tons of pressure on each square foot of firebox wall. To keep the walls from flying apart there are thousands of staybolts holding the inner and outer sheets together.

The roof of the firebox, called the crownsheet, is normally covered by water. But if the water level drops and the crown sheet is uncovered the steel will soften from the heat and the tons of pressure will cause it to sag down between the staybolts and, eventually separate. If this happens suddenly an explosion will result.

The water in the boiler is superheated--it's liquid only because it's under pressure. At 200 psi it has a temperature of 388°F. In a boiler explosion it will flash to into steam. There have been many cases of crownsheet failure explosions where the entire boiler has been ripped from the frame and tossed down the track by the rocket-like force of the escaping steam. Others have exploded with little visible damage to the outside but typically anyone in the cab is killed. The Gettysburg people were saved by the designed which made the explosion a bit more gradual.

Steve, another thing that prevented much more damage at Gettysburg was that the firebox door was open at the time, helping to dissipate the instant forces that blew when the crownsheet failed. Otherwise the blast would have been straight down through the grates, possibly launching the locomotive. The official cause was, like you said, the sight glass being not only plugged but built up with scale so bad that even if it worked the water level probably wouldn't have been seen.

Here in NJ we have always had probably the strictest pressure vessels laws and regs on the books. We were inspected annually by state inspectors, not someone from Hartford Insurance like most of the PA operations had. We didn't have a problem at all going for the R-Stamp as we always ran a tight ship anyway. It did involve a lot of extra paperwork but we did what they told us and as a matter of fact just passed our first annual audit by the feds. NJ Museum of Transportation / Pine Creek RR was the first museum/tourist line to get the R-Stamp certification. Strasburg (as would be imagined) was right behind us with theirs. They do run a tight ship too, Linn Moedinger and his crew should be commended for their work.

As far as another post, I know this applies to live steam, but on the 1:1 units we DO test the safeties at least once a day as per regs but we don't fire up and let them go and THEN add water. That would put far too much stress on boiler steel and shorten the life of the vessel.

Pine Creek is in the process of restoring, totally, our 1912 Porter Mogul. Recently completed a brand-new tender, new brasses for the 3 drive axles, new drive tires, and now work is back to speed on the boiler barrel. It is taking longer than originally planned but it is being done right the first time. Our website has info and pics www.njmt.org

I knew the part about superheated steam/water but I didn't realize about the crownsheet part.

So, then, it would seem that (as long as the pop-offs are working) a boiler can take just about anything you can throw at it pressure-wise... PROVIDED you keep enough water in it lest you melt the steel. No?

Boilers are substantially built but they are a high maintenance item. They require frequent wash outs to remove the sludge and scale left behind from all that water boiling away. Stay bolts break and have to be replaced. (Many of them are hollow...drilled with a tell-tale hole most of the way through. That way if they snap internally they start spewing steam and water.) Some of the stays are flexible to allow for movement as the boiler expands and contracts. These have a ball head on the outside covered with a screw on cap. In the old days boilers were all of riveted construction. The seams can leak and have to be "caulked" meaning basically pounded with a hammer and tools. Ditto where the flues and tubes meet the flue sheet and crown sheet at each end. Fireboxes themselves wear and various sheets or the entire unit replaced. It's all hugely laborious, what with steel an inch or more thick.

All this just for the boiler and we haven't even gotten to the engine running gear. You can see why steam was easy pickings when the diesel came along.

Here are a couple of shots of a boiler undergoing its 5 year inspection and repairs. This is old 618, ex U.P I believe and almost 100 years old(correct me if I'm wrong Steve K.), now on the Heber valley Railroad. All that was found wrong was a few cracks on the firebox door. Not too bad for a 100 year old locomotive. Note that Heber also has one of the most complete machine shops for restoring steam locomotives, including a rare wheel lathe that is able to turn down both sides of a wheel pair at the same time. Most of the machinery came from the U.P. some years back.

Just shy of 100 (1907). Former Union Pacific and a near twin of 428, built in 1900 and now being restored by Illinois Railway Museum. But let's not get too excited about their ages as there is probably very little there that is original after half a century of use and maintenance (until their retirements in the late 1950's). Maybe the frames and driving wheel centers.

It's very likely that both were orginally built as Vauclain compounds. That was a compounding technique where high and low pressure cylinders were directly above and below each other on both sides with the two piston rods yoked together at the crossheads.

The following is the U.P. maintenance schedule for the "Challenger" 4-6-6-4 type locomotives. This schedule can be found in "The Challenger Locomotives" by William Kratville 1980 pp 37-38.

"The early series 4-6-6-4s shoppings were scheduled for every 225,000 miles service for flues, the machinery overhaul was needed each 45,000 miles. The class shopping order was class 3-5-5-4-5-3 and five of the series were assigned to the shop each month." (Keep in mind that this is for the early series "Fetters". Between the early series and the later series "Jabelmanns', there were ventually 105 units on the U.P. roster.

STANDARD CLASSIFICATION OF REPAIRS TO LOCOMOTIVES AND TENDERS

Class 1: New boiler or new back end, flues new or reset. General repairs machinery and tender, including turning tires or new, which will place locomotives in condition to perform a full term of service in the district and class of service to which assigned.

Class 2: New firebox or one or more shell courses or roof sheets, flues new or reset and general rrepairs to machinery and tender including turning tires or new.

Class 3: General overhauling of machinery and tender, including turning tires or new, necessary repairs to firebox and boiler, flues new or reset (superheater flues may be excepted).

Class 4 Intermediate overhauling light repairs to boiler and firebox, including rewenall or resetting of part set of small flues, necessary repairs to machinery, including turning tires or new.

Class 5: Necessary repairs to boiler, machinery and tender, including tires turned or new and one or more pairs of driving wheel bearings refitted.

All above also to place locomotives in condition to perform in full term or service in the district and class to which assigned.

Drop Pit: Heavy running repairs or accident repairs requiring the locomotive to be shopped but which do not improve the general condition of the locomotive.

Running Repairs: All repairs not included in the foregoing classifications.

Suffix A to any class will indicate the repairs are required due to accident, B initial application of stoker, C initial application of superheater, D initial application of outside valve gear, E conversion from one compound to simple or from one type to another.

Classes 1, 2, and 3 will be known as "general", class 4 as "Heavy," class 5 as "Light." drop Pit and Running Repairs as "unclassified repairs."

Full term of service is the maximum milage of flues and or machinery which locomotives will accumulate between General Repairs, class 3 or better, in the district and class of service to which assigned.

Keep in mind that the driver counterwieghts were doing the same thing as a crankshaft harmmonic balancer on a internal combustion engine. But even with their use, locomotive frames, cylinder saddles, waist sheets, and in the case of articulated engines the articulation joint would take severe beatings. Major crack repairs of the frames were routinely needed.

During the restoration of famed S.P. Daylight 4449, "It must be noted here that at one point in the rebuilding process, serious cracks were discovered in the crownsheet and front flue sheet of the boiler. At first it appeared that these cracks would prevent the successful recertification of the boiler, and prevent the engine from operating again. But thanks to the skill and knowledge of Joseph H. Crumley, of Otter Rock, Oregon, a retired welding engineer and teacher, the cracks were repaired through a little used welding process performed by Mr. Crumley himself." from 4449 The Queen of Steam by Henry Breuckman and Jeffrey Moreau p. 30 Carbarn Press First Printing March 1984 Library of Congress 83-72151 I.S.B.N. 0-934406-01-4

Keep in mind that the chemical and mineral make-up of water varies from one locatioo to another. As such, water can and will have varing degrees of corrosion upon the boiler

I always wanted to be an Engineer.

In fact, a few years ago, not long after U.P aquired S.P., U.P. was hiring train crew in Tucson, and I went through the interview process.

First, let me say that the "needed qualifications" as specified by the "road" constantly change, and it is almost impossible to read them. One minute they require you to have a college degree as an application requirment, then they change their mind. One minute they want railroad enthusiasts, then the next minute they dont. One minute they want people with family ties to the road, next minute they dont. And on and on.

Back when I applied, U.P. started the hiring process via D.E.S. Job Service. Job Service posted the job, but did not actively advertise it. I applied, and was granted a spot at one of the U.P. day-long job seminars. For the most part, U.P. instructed Job Service to come up with 300 qualified applicants (Job Service conducted the initial screening).

U.P. then took over the interview process directly. They conducted 3 day-long job seminars with a max capicity of 150 people. What happened was Job Service contacted 300 of the most qualified people, and told us that we had to personally come into Job Service and sign up for the seminar...on a first come-first serve basis (with Armed Forces Veterans preferance).

At the seminar, U.P. stressed to people that the seminar was for train service only. Anyone who just wanted to get their foot into the door and cross-train to another field was not welcome...goodbye. Then they stressed goodbye to anyone who may have partook in illegal substance within the past 90 days...goodbye. Then they went into a long speil about the hard life of train crew personnel and said goodbye to those not interested. Then they administered an Engligh comprehension exam, based around railroad related topics (I aced this exam). Then they conducted a physical fitness exam, consisting of how many sit-ups within a given time period, how much weight you can curl, and the strength of your hand grip. (If you did not pass these exams, then you could not reapply for the position for 90 days). If ya passed, then you were granted a personal interview. Needless to say I passed and was granted a personal interview. I had credentials, my veterans status, educational background, one of the senior U.P. engineers out of Tucson was on my resume, plus my experience as a licensed streetcar operator, conductor and operations dispatcher.

For whatever reason, I was not hired on. But I did come to learn that I had qualified for subsequent interview appointments, and Job Service had my file screwd up and failed to notify me of my interview appointments!

Within the past few months, U.P. has once again been hiring train crew for Tucson, Phoenix and Yuma. Once again I was considering forgoeing my Arizon State University plans in lieu of U.P. One of the highest ranking Tucson engineers is an aquaintance, and I had a long talk with him. He encouraged my to forget U.P. and to press on with my college education. Right now the future of train crew job security and the excellent salary and benefits once associated with this job are now uncertain. The railroad is pushing to eliminate train crew through the increased use of radio control, and the once excellent salaries and benefits are being whittled away via arbitration.

This high senority engineer aquaintance of min is also perplexed about the U.P. and former S.P. hiring practices. He has told me that there have been several enthusiastic and qualified people that have applied, and the "road" has turned them away. Meanwhile, they go ahead and hire people who are walking disasters who have no business operating a train. He told me that if I only knew half of the shit that has gone down...

I have a friend who is a conductor for Norfolk Southern. His trains only have the engineer and conductor on board. That's it. He makes up the train, and then he and an engineer pull it down the rail.

Good union pay, but it smells vaguely similar to the situation the projectionists in the movie business experienced.

UP is very shorthanded right now and plans to hire 1345 train, engine, and yard employees between late November 2003 and March 2004, and as many is 3000 during 2004. In the meantime they are putting managers into service, suspending some maintenance projects so work train crews can be used on revenue trains, and even borrowing workers from CSX and CN.

Being in the museum/tourist line/fan trip end of things all these years, I would say we now have far more of the "romance" of railroading than the "real" railroaders did. I have met many an oldtimer who absolutely loved his job and was loyal to the railroad he worked for, but almost to the man they despised the higher-ups they dealt with. Dispatchers and road foremen and district supers and the like were power-mad dictators who tried to squeeze 110% out of everyone under them.

These hands-on workers, the engineers and conductors and brakemen, and others not in train service really did love what they did so long as they were far away from bosses.

What the romantics tell you isn't exactly what happened. Waiting for days and days to be called up on an extra list (don't even think about leaving the house for even a minute because they might call), getting EXACTLY eight hours off before you were scheduled to run again (I never could walk in the door and just crash into bed, no matter how tired I was), doing yard moves at night in the rain before radios, nursing along a locomotive that was known to be a lemon but they would not take it out of service and then catching hell because you ran late, etc. It was a very tough job.

It's no wonder there were so many craft unions in railroading. If it was such a gravy job there would be no need for them. It was, and still is, hard work. My hat is off to the people past and present who choose to make a living at it.

Since the origonal thread topic was about model railroaders, I am going to direct us back to that subject, and disscuss one of my favorite subjects...the imported, hand-built, brass scale model.

I have had some previous discussions with some other F.T. members who are fellow "brass" enthusiasts, and was able to help out with technical questions.

Although the info I am about to add is quite extensive, it should answer many of your questions:

For now, I will be quoting from Phil and Ruth Kohl's book "Pacific Fast Mail...25 Years of Fine Models C 1979 Library of Congress No. 78-78186. There is a more recent book out about Tenshodo, which was done in a presentation style and is quite pricy. Occasionally they have poped-up on E-Bay.

"The first International Models advertisements offering brass models made in the Orient appeared in 1948. Initially, quanities were very limited. Modelers, accustomed to assembling their motive power from a kit, were slow to accept the tinplate-like concept of a ready-to-run scale model. The models were exported from Japan by Atlas, a Japenese trading company. The trading company fills several needs such as language translation; preparing paperwork to meet banking, export, and customs requirements; and arranging for packing and shipping."

"The early models sold by PFM were obtained from makers in the United States, primarily Kemtron. Early in 1954, a series of misunderstandings occured between International and Atlas. As a result, Atlas began a search for another importer in the United States. Apparently, Bill Ryan (a Seattle Cadillac dealer) learned of this search from both Levon Kemalyon, then owner of Kemtron, and Mr. Phil Crawley, owner of Van Hobbies, Vancouver, Britis Columbia, Canada. About the same time Mr. Ryan saw samples of Tenshodo diesels and passenger cars during a visit to Kemtron in Fresno, California. After exchanging letters, Mr. Ryan flew to Japan for meetings with both Atlas and Tenshodo. It was during one of the meetings with Atlas that Mr. Ryan saw the pilot model of the HO-scale Shay locomotive. Both firms agreed to supply models, establishing relationships with PFM which have continued for 25 years. The United label was selected to describe the many small makers represented by Atlas. Mr. Crawley agreed to import both Tenshodo and United models into Canada, under the PFM name."

I should interject here. Tenshodo "officially" entered the brass market in 1953 with the FT diesel locomotives made by Tetsudo. Tenshodo is also considered to be th "official" birthplace of the imported brass model. United States Military Officers helped to spark the interest in Tenshodo models when they saw the handmade Japenese prototype engines being offered for sale in the Tenshodo toy store in Tokyo. These Officers began to order individual custom built models of American locomotives for themselves.

Kemtron is now part of the Precision Scale Company/Iron Horse Models line. Also, this is the "succession" of importers who also became part of Precision Scale: Max Grey, Balboa, Westside.

"Mr. Ryan visited Japan about twice a year to meet with both exporters and manufacturers. Apparently he purchased some models directly from the makers for his own personal collection and in response to orders from others for custom-built models. Careful inspection of PFM's records has led us to the conclusion thaat some of these models were sold privately by Mr. Ryan. We examined all the PFM sales invoices from 1953-1959 and found no evidence of sale through PFM of some of the models that are known to exist. One of our unfinished tasks is identifying and including these models in the approperiate listings."

Some of You might even be interested in this link to danish local tv-station last nite: Danish State Railways (DSB) - normally known for getting surprised by snowing during winter months - yesterday heard the weather-forecast, and someone was wise enough to foresee, that the new railbusses, running in the area of Hans Christian Andersens Odense city, would never be able to go through the heavy snow coming up. Only available gear to do the job was The 1954 General Motors clone MY 1101, totally renovated and situated at the Railway Museum. The old roundnosed beauty was taken out, and made ready with ploughs. Unfortunate, only the preparations reached the tv-news.

Back then in the fifties, danish trade unions were mad over the idea of DSB buying american diesel engines, allthough license-build in Sweden (by Nydquist and Holm NOHAB, Trollhättan). The unions made pressure on the government, who ordered local manufactorer FRICHS to build a similar locomotive ASAP. As Frichs had no motor this size, but had to develop this from the buttom, the project was hastened by using a motor from B&W Burmester and Wain shipbuilders of Copenhagen - and they should never had tried so. Only two locomotives were build, and they both were scrapped within few years, whilst the swedish GMs - sixty in number ran perfectly - the last of them into the new millenium. Some few are even today in use on private railways in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Now, danish model manufactorer HELJAN makes HO models of both the original swedish and the danish mishap. Looks like, You'll have to push "Produkter" and then "HO Rullende materiel" to get there...

Went to a type of hobby and trade show for model railroading last year. Got to view a minidv presentation of someone lgb garden railroad and even some rough sketched scale drawings on graph paper.

The garden railway had almost 3k feet of track; a bit of which was located in an oversized detached garage and workshop. Most of the track was outdoors on a year round basis through all types of weather. The person regularly ran the train even while it was raining or snowing. Some of the footage which stood out was the fact that there was a seven foot handmade trestle, and the track crossed the rdiveway two seperate times and was regularly driven over by vehicles.

The person had bought three of the engines to the tradeshow type event- all were very well costomized and perfectly weathered. Two of the three had command and control functioned that were wired in. I'm not sure how or if the third unit worked with the existing set-up.

I personally only own an n scale set-up which is still in the works. Its been that way for years, and will remain that way for many more years. Its presently set down to take up about half of a roughly 16x16 room.

For those of the members of this board that are from the Pittsburgh region; does Buhl still have their displays near one of the new stadiums??

What chu talkin 'bout Willis?

I'm helping a friend of mine with his layout at home. Well that is if I can get him motivated to actually do something rather than just talk about it. LoL And I'm part of the local model railroading club that meets downtown at the roundhouse museum. Right now I'm in charge on cleaning up some messy solder joints on the rail where the drops are made every so often to the main power. Most aren't bad, but a few are bad enough to derail even the most stable train. I'm no so sure connecting the track piece by solder is better than by the little connectors. They do make electrified connectors, with the drop wire built right in.

I do need to learn DCC, it can do some amazing things.
