Yesterday morning I was watching the local Fox 13 morning show as they were discussing how difficult it has been for chinese officials to edit out sex talk of Friends episodes for broadcast in China...
As they came back from the videotaped story, the male newscaster says to the female newscaster the following...
"You know I bet the Chinese see us the same way that we see them in Godzilla movies".
She gave him this bewildered look and just went on with the next story.
GODZILLA IS NOT CHINESE YOU MORON!!!
Asian people must look all alike to this redneck idiot.

I thought he was a lizard that happend to be a nuclear test site and was mutated. I didn't know he was a dinosaur.

That's pretty funny, but what did you expect from a Fox station?
Posted by Randy Stankey (Member # 64) on 01-22-2004, 09:48 AM:
I like the term the British give their newscasters: "News Reader".
Yes, I understand that in British circles the term connotes a certain level of intelligence that allows one to read and comment on the news in a clear and concice manner but I'm going for the idea that means the person simply reads what has been handed to him.
I don't know about other contries but, in America, the news media is certainly going in that direction. On-Air personalities are becoming less able to digest and understand the information they are reading. They are becoming nothing more than a bunch of "Talking Heads".
Furthermore, in Japan, Godzilla (Pronnounced in Japanese: "Go-Jee-Rah") movies fall into a genre of fiction where the simplistic and even silly actions/mannerisms of the characters are part of the screenplay. It is expected that characters will act in a certain way. It's a kind of satire on modern culture, a lot like the way characters behave in American "Slasher" flicks... The scantily clad young girl goes down to the basement to her certain death while the audience screams (to themselves), "Don't go down the stairs!"
Thus, I'm saying, that Japanese (or Chinese) people see themselves in Godzilla movies (or Kung-Fu movies) in as silly a light as we do. They just understand the cultural underpinnings of them in a way we don't. People in other cultures might not understand the moral undertones in Slasher Flicks (only immoral characters get "offed") as we do but I can certainly imagine that there are some Japanese (Chinese) people watching Halloween, et. al. and inwardly screaming to themselves, "Don't go down the stairs!"

I've never been a fan of news programs, especially TV networks. The beautiful talking heads are far more important than the news they read, if you can call 10-to-20 seconds of soundbyte "news." Far more important to have Dirk Squarejaw and his gorgeous sidekick ALMOST tell you the news of the day.
Equally sad are the required jolly comic-relief weather guys/gals, who show us the lighter side of a typhoon in the Far East that killed hundreds. "Gee Jim, sure glad we weren't over there, huh?" Yuk yuk yuk.
Bias and all, I'd still rather read the paper every day. At least you can read a few more words that what they fire off at you in the time the newscasts use between commercials.
"A comet is about to impact the Earth! We'll be right back with an update after we hear from our sponsors..."

Fox has the best news babes. Ooooh, Laurie Dhue, Dari Alexander, E.D. Hill... hubba, hubba!

I think that a lot of the talking heads on broadcast news are just failed or wannabe actors.

Why do the Japanese always get the L's and the R's pronunciations switched? There is no excuse for this. It makes me angry. If they don't shape up quick, I will stop spending all of my money on their superiorly designed and manufactured products and put my money into inferior American products!
Posted by Michael Schaffer (Member # 1204) on 01-23-2004, 09:17 PM:
Because the Japanese R is very close to L and D. It is not a rolled R as in Spanish, but a single quick attack of the tongue in the same place where the tongue tips for L.
In fact, you will hear that at the beginning of words, many Japanese actually say L instead of R. So the "Rahmen" noodles sound more like "Lahmen".
If you want to practice the Japanese R, say and repeat "Eddie" very quickly until the D becomes so short that it comes out as R. But only with a single attack, not "Errrie".

One of my professors worked at a news station and I got to help out. What's funny is that it actually says, "Hello. My name is [reporters name] and this is actionwitness news live..." According to a grip, if it's not on there, they really do forget to say it. The worst is when they try to ad-lib or fill extra time. It never works.
Oh, and their faces really do stay that way once they get off camera.

Umm... "Actionwitness"? How lame. Any news program calling themselves "actionwitness" needs to shut down, fire all of their employees and have their children sold into slave labor.

The station I used to work at, the main anchor was a complete moron. He was known for saying and doing stupid things on air, but somehow he is still employed by that station. Fortunately I don't have to deal with those types where I'm working now!

There was a small fire in a motel in Greenville SC this morning.
The local newscaster referred to it as a 'deadly wake-up call.'
They are still going 'live' to the scene 4-5 hours later.
Unfortunately, 6 were killed, with 14 getting burned. The guests couldn't find the exits!
I used to work at the old CBS network affiliate in Atlanta. Forrest Sawyer, now with ABC, was the local anchor of Eyewitness News there. He had a terrible temper. I have video to prove it, too!

Please, post a Quicktime! Or still shots, I'd love to see that.

Those of you who worked at your local stations... how did you like it? Is it totally hectic? Are there MAJOR office politics? Did they blame everything on you?
Posted by Tim Reed (Member # 137) on 01-25-2004, 09:46 AM:
It was hectic, yes. But I was MCO at the transmitter, so I rarely saw front-office people or air talent. (Although I did have a fling with a cute little chick who used to host the kid's block!)
Posted by Bruce McGee (Member # 131) on 01-25-2004, 03:33 PM:
Liked it. Worked with everybody. Got to go to all the CBS parties. Made sure that I didn't get into the political issues.
Got to see a member of our on-air talent almost pass out into a plate of food at the first 'Fall Season Party' that I went to. That was fun.
Wouldn't do it again for the world. There is nothing but back-stabbing and bullshit in TV now. A 46 year veteran of local TV here in Asheville was royally screwed out of most of his retirement benefits because the station was sold to a new owner about 5 years before his retirement. Sucks.
EDIT: I have no way to post video to the net. PLUS: the original tape is U-matic. I DO have a machine that works if I replace a couple of belts... again.

Many moons ago I was a 16mm newsreel cameraman for ABC in Detroit and in Los Angeles. I worked with many reporters and news anchors... some were great, and some were total morons. But, I personally really enjoyed the work and "most" of the people. I had planned to make it my "career" until I found out about 35mm and "Hollywood"!
I did have the privilege of working for the best News Director and "person", Bill Fyfe. His mentoring really helped me in my young days of learning the ways of the world and personal values. An honorable and honest man that was super fair, non-biased, and non judgmental. Great traits for a person in general and necessary guidelines for "fair" reporting. I learned a lot from him.
I agree with Bruce about not wanting to get into that biz today. That biz, as with many others now, are full of back-stabbers and ladder-climbers at ANY cost. No Thanks!
There is a related story about Catherine Bosley, the anchorwoman that went on a cruise ship and somehow decided to get involved in a "strip" show. Of course the pics found their way onto the inet and her boss basically forced her to resign; read: fired her for not being "professional." Moral of the story: The company your work for owns your ass 24/7/365!
Ummmm... The graphic/nude pics can be found here for those that are interested.

Okay, so she's a natural blonde but she's got fake boobs! That's one of the worst boob job's I've seen in a long time!
She should sue her plastic surgeon because it's probably the REAL reason she got the axe.

Thomas is right; their heads are really blown eggs. They just read with a straight face & jerk their heads occasionally to get some movement. Watch local news with the sound down, & wonder how long you'd stay in a conversation with someone who moved their heads around like that while talking. That's one of the reasons they're funny/creepy, it's not natural behavior & so a poor performance.
They will say anything on the teleprompter, with the same delivery, straight face, & same rhythm of head twitch & eyebrow raise. One newscaster referred to Mark Twain as the "puh-SOD-nee-yum" of Samuel Clemens, without a bump, while the other folks on camera went into facial paralysis.
Another favorite is a newscaster with notoriously bad eyesight, but she's too vain to wear contacts or glasses so she can read the prompter. A report (delivered with the earnest face) on the activities of the Retired Firefighters Association became a report on the activities of the Retarded Firefighters Association. The camera started bobbing up & down violently.

Anyone here capable of receiving CBC should really check out The Newsroom Very funny show, and by the sounds of this discussion, based entriely on reality.

Oh PULEEZE, Will! I found that site many years ago when I was 12. I never went back since they wanted $$$ to see the "good" stuff! I mean, I can see ***GOOD STUFF*** whenever I want!

On the "Newsroom" website, I stumbled across this paragraph in the synopsis:
quote:
In the meantime, Karen (Karen Hines) discovers that even though she is named one of the Top Ten Women In The News Who Make A Difference, it makes no difference. She still finds herself meeting men in bars claiming to be mechanical experts and TV producers/personal trainers.
I don`t get it. OK, men might claim to be TV producers in hope of getting women who want to get into the TV business, but why claim to be a mechanical expert? What sex appeal does that have?
