Remember years ago when there was a video released on the WWW somewhere showing a whale (or something big) on a beach? It was decided to blow the thing up. The explosion happened, and people cheered, than large pieces of whale blubber fell all around the area, sending people running. I haven't seen or heard this in a long time, but that's what this thread reminded me of.

Thanks for the link, Scott! I remember seeing a movie file of it long ago (back when I had an SGI Indigo (UNIX machine) as my desk workstation).

'Uhh, what are those pieces of... Oh my GHAAAAAAARD!'
Whoever it was in the Highways Department to hit on that idea must have been thinking in terms of a cross between Monty Python and the Darwin Awards...

Scott, I could not get the link to completely open within a reasonable time since Verizon is still in the Stone Ages, but I believe that happened in either Oregon or Washington State. I have a video of that - somewhere.

I heard the story a number of years ago and considered it an urban legend because (in the story I heard) a significant chunk of blubber was sent flying through the air and landed some distance away on top of a car, killing a man who was just getting into it to go to work. His wife stared on in horror from the front room window.
In this story it happened on one of the beaches of Oregon
