Its known that when a guy can play the guitar girls flock to him. It is the same way when a girl can play a guitar or piano? i.e. Norah Jones, Alisha Keys, Jewel, Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow, etc.

Is it a turn on for you guys out there?

Who are you trying to pick up? Aren't you a musician? I certainly don't mind a girl who can play an instrument or two. A girl who can sing well is kind of nice too. I wouldn't go so far to say it's a huge gigantic turn on, though. And it's certainly not a turn-off.

Girls that play guitars? Sure. Works for me. I think I have a Lita Ford poster rolled up with my childhood collection of rock band posters. Still, my favorite rock album poster of all time is the nude ladies bicycle race poster from the Queen album "Jazz." Shit. What can I say? I'm a guy.

I wonder if it's an attraction because they are a musician or it's some "star" attraction thing.
Personally it's not a matter of musicianship, but it's that they have the right "magnetism" or not, for me.
That said, perhaps it's their "magnetism" the gets them on the stage in the first place and then that magnetism attracts their "groupies" male or female.
I'm thinking that there are a lot of great musicians out there who never made it because they didn't have the right pizzazz. And maybe some that make it not because they are technically great musicians but because the have an abundance of attractiveness.

At the high school talent show there were some really good female musicians that could sing also. I never stayed after the show to see if the guys did flock.

I remember back when I was a little bastard and all my friends said "OMG OMG OMFG Lita Ford is sooo hot she plays guitar and heavy metal and she is fine!!!!". I finally saw her and my reaction was "eh?". She isn't attractive to me. Pat Benatar used to be pretty damn cute, and I even thought that when I was 8 or 2 or however the hell old I was. I used to think the chick from "Blondie" was good looking... at least I think I did. Hard to remember. The Go-Go's had one cute chick. Or was that the Bengals? I think it was The Bengals. Damn it I am losing my mind.

I never got none when I paraded around with my electric guitar. But maybe that was because instead of "magnetic" I was "contageous". Nah. My current musical abilities don't seem to help either. But again I don't go around announcing them and/or showing them off. Adam Martin is my biggest fan, though.

You suddenly started seeing pics of various soloists and opera stars on the the exact same discs which six months previously had come with some tasteful c18 old master on the sleeve. I think people are attracted to the gender of musician that they're attracted to in general. Someone attracted to guys will probably be attracted to male musicians and and people attracted to girls will probably be attracted to female musicians.

Replace musician with actor and the same would probably hold.

That`s OK, the picture actually shows me demonstrating my "Ivan the Terrible" look (which I learned from Eisenstein`s movie), but it was the only one of me with my bass I had readily available on my computer.

I think that the attraction is somewhat more than just based on talent. Certainly the popularity of that person (musician, actor etc) plays into it. Also it doesn't supprise me that women, especially young ones, fawn over those that can play various instruments (guitar, drums etc) because of the bad boy image they typically have.

IMHO, the bad boy image is probably the basis for the large majority of the attraction for women. They will throw themselves at those in hopes to gain their attention, and in their mind affection.

On the other hand, a female musician usually gains respect, not attraction and lust (based on music ability alone). A male musician that has a reputation for treating women like crap, and look like crap, will still have to fight the groupies off with a stick. Gene Simmons who claims to have beded over a thousand women still has thousands more who would gladly join the long and undistinguished list.

This is EXACTLY WHY a great deal of popular music SUCKS today. Great musical talent and great looks are rarely ever carried in the same person. We just have a lot of pretty people singing the same old, tired shit. Most of it all sounds the same, and doesn't sound very good in the first place.

In some respects, album oriented rock still allows ugly-yet-talented people to gain success. This is also the ONLY GENRE in popular music where "classic" tunes 20 or 30 years old or older are being played. Still, someone like Bob Dylan would have a much harder time if he was a young musician starting a career today. Good looks were not important before the age of music video.

For the country and "pop" (or rather gun-toting rap scumbag criminal wannabe music), you pretty much have to look like a porn star to get anywhere. This is especially true for country music these days. Guys like Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash would have absolutely no chance for success if they were young guys trying to break into the industry. The country music genre, as it currently exists, is by far the most shallow and derivative form of popular music being sold today.

Jen,..creative people are a turn-on, plain and simple. Doesn't matter to me if they're a musician, an artist, a designer, etc. Creative people have more fulfilled lives and that makes them more interesting people and more fun to be with.

But I do have a "thing" for female bass players. I don't know why. Not thrilled with female drummers though.

My cat, Mogzilla, when conducting a heated territory argument with next door's ginger tom, sounds more tuneful.

One of the last films I showed before leaving the cinema business was Dancer in the Dark. As mentioned in another thread I don't support the death penalty. But for Björk I make an exception. Nor am I alone - duty managers and floor staff would congregate at the back of the auditorium four times a day for the privilege of seeing her dangling at the end of a rope!

Carl: I've been playing the guitar and piano alot lately, but I started out with the drums in my first band. Then in my second band I played the quitar and sang lead vocals. I've tested the waters of playing bass guitar, if I actually had a bass I would play it all the time. Since I don't I just use my electric guitar and distort it to make it sound as close as possible to an electric bass. I played the violin back in middle school, that was really fun. But had to quit when I moved to Texas.
I'm currently going solo, finished my first CD(very rough cut) about a year ago. I was working on my second CD but never got the chance to record it. I've got the songs and the layout of the CD down, its just actually doing the hard work or recording over and over again to get it perfect is stressful. I've decided to just start working on my 3rd album, so far I've got about 4 songs in the works.
I've been playing the guitar since 2000
The drums since 1999
The piano off and on since 1998
I'm one of those people who just makes stuff off the top of their head. I never liked playing stuff that was already out there. I would try to put my own style into everything I do. I never write down my music, I always try to do it off of memory. It's one of those things were the music can always change. There's always room for improvement.

The photos being posted are interesting. I'm not a Bjork fan, but I do like Tori Amos. The Wilson sisters from Heart are talented, but I notice only the picture of the "skinny blonde one" gets posted.

For every good looking rocker with talent, I'm willing to bet there are at least 10 to 100 (if not more) boasting equal or better talents -but are unable to get into the music business because they don't look good enough.

Most successful yet ugly rockers these days have to kind of slide into position. For instance, I really like the Foo Fighters. But would their kinda ugly frontman, Dave Grohl, have been able to achieve success if he had not already got his foot into the door being the drummer for Nirvana?

That's not always true. This certainly applies for the part of the country in which I live. Being a degreed, professional artist has never been the thing that won me any girlfriends. More often than not, it gets me a one-way ticket to the "friend zone."

Of course, I'm not the kind of guy that women are going to find instantly attractive. So its always that "get to know you" thing, followed by "I don't to do anything to ruin our friendship" bit. Yeah, great. Just another addition to the pool of platonic female friends who call me up asking me shit about why guys do what ever or even tell about their last sexual encounter. SOOO JOKING! www.citybysea.com We've been playing together for quite a long time through different incarnations. And I play bass, both electric and double. Also piano, guitar, cello, viola, mandolin, lap steel... just about anything stringed cept middle eastern instruments and I can keep a "four on the floor" on the drums. [Razz]

I have engineered, produced, regionally for quite a few bands and singer songwriters, done live sound and booked for clubs in the Syracuse area. Played in youth symphony and in bop jazz while in my teens on double bass, played live or in sessions in jazz, classical, rock, folk, country and r&b... but anyway, enough of my cv...

I find myself more attracted to females who are "artfull" albeit musically, art, literature, photography etc... actually I am definitely more attracted to women who are impassioned about what they believe. Just no apathy, please [Wink]

I actually have not seen "Dancer in the Dark" - although, I have listened to 'Selmasongs', which I did like, but I think that 'Vespertine' is still my favorite of her albums.

I play a little clarinet, a little piano/keyboard, and I sing (alto II).
My brother is the well-rounded musician in the family! The instruments he can put to good use: piano / keyboard / organ, guitar (electric, acoustic, classical), electric bass (owns a fretless), drums, banjo, ocarina, voice (tenor II / baritone), and pretty much anything else he has an opportunity to sit down and tinker with for a day or two. He's known at a nearby bar as 'the kid that plays video game music' - from bringing his keyboard with him to their "Open Mike Nite".
At the moment, he's attending college, with a music major, focus on piano. [thumbsup]

Aging projection techs would be hot if they had a social life and cared about something more than just themselves. Being around too much machinery screws with their head. But its fine if they don't care about a social life, people can live how ever they want to... I just don't think its very attractive to do that to ones self and be perfectly fine about it.

Seeing talented female musicians can be a turn-on, sure. Guys like looking at girls. Talented ladies a plus, attractive talented ladies even better. Guys are guys.

Years ago I did lights for The Runaways (where Cherie Currie, Joan Jett, and Lita Ford came from). They were 15 and 16 years old at the time and they were hot. Their act was to BE hot (they succeeded BTW)

The stage crew behaved as they were all underage but we did enjoy the show just the same.

I also think it is possibly a (welcome) novelty to some of us seeing talented female musicians in a male-dominated business. I find a lady who is independent enough to be what she wants to be, and does it, a turn on.

When my daughter was in junior high school she told me she was going to form a band. How?

I think the desire started with her enthusiasm for the Ramones, when she and a girlfriend took the Path train to Hoboken to hear them play. They were turned away as underage (the venue served alcohol) but Joey Ramone came out and signed autographs for them and spent time chatting with them. (He was gone from this world before she was able to hear him in person, I think.)

Darned if she didn't get a bass guitar, learn to play it in Texas, and two years after college graduation, go touring with a gal singer and four guys in a van, giving concerts in Nashville, New Orleans and Boston, with gigs inbetween, playing both bass and regular guitar.

And she long ago left her three child-size violins in our attic.

Wow! What a thread. I had to go back to your original post to see what the original question was.

I live in the Far East in Japan and every Sunday morning they have musical talent shows for young people on TV. These are the commercial networks and not only the "PBS type". On these shows young people who have written their own music are allowed to come on and show their stuff. There is no competition and no scores are given. No glitz and no fanfare just a very respectable venue.

What always amazed me was that over 90% of these young people are female and they are extraordinarily good at what they do. It may have something to do with females being better at math (and music is mathmatical). Either that or the boys have their minds on baseball. Ages run from about 7 to early twenties. You can tell these young performers were not forced against their will and took up music for the sheer love of it. Their determination and dedication shows through all the way and it is just amazing in my eyes.

To answer your question, yes, I think it is a turn on to see a woman put her heart and soul into something, especially music. It is the concentration part that is most mesmerizing. That she also is attractive is just an added plus and not a requirement.

What I love the most? Female on country fiddle. Don't know why it just happens that way.

BTW you took alot of heat in this thread as it wandered all over the place. Hope you don't let it get to you. At least you got to know some of these people on FT a little better.

Oh, cheap mouth skills jokes aside, I think any appreciation and talent for an instrument is an attractive quality. Singing and vocal skills alone might not quite be enough, because after all, ANYONE can sing along to their favorite CD, regardless of musical training, theory, discipline, appreciation. It's that discipline and appreciation that is that part that's attractive and seductive.

Jazzy trumpet skills are quite nice, for that takes a bit of skill and practice. Guitar skills are just as sexy, because what can be done with fingers is just as intricate and subtle as mouth-muscle control.

I personally take my vocal skills a lot more seriously then I ever took my trumpet skills. For me it was more enjoyable and I put a lot more time and discipline into vocals then any of my other musical talents. True vocalists aren't just singing... Try singing and opera or even gospel, not everyone can do that and sound good no matter how much they try. Just like with intruments, no matter how much practice some people just can't do it. Me with a flute for example...I tried and tried to play but with my trumpet lips I just could never get a noise out of that damn thing!

Jennifer, I just listened to some of your music. I am a studio musician and am actually on a few records that you might possibly, well, remotely possibly, have a copy of. Remotely in that they are in stores, but nothing too big yet. We mostly do jingles for various businesses.

Anyway, I have read your earlier posts explaining that your songs are self expression and not meant to be hits or be too catchy. As far as that goes, they are great songs. They remind me of Lisa Loeb. Schoolgirl ramblings.

What is your recording set up? Are you singing and playing at the same time? It sounds like you are. Because of this, both are suffering. You sound like you have a beautiful voice, but you are not able to fully concentrate on your singing.

I am really not trying to be mean, or belittle you in any way. I am just trying to offer an honest, and hopefully, helpful opinion.

As others have said, work on developing a hook. And then record the guitar and vox seperately. The final product will be much better for it. You'll also be better prepared for recording in a professional studio.

Keep at it, though. There is very little that is more rewarding than recording your own music.

As a matter of fact I'm going to do some extra track recordings today. Drums and what not at a friend's house who has a better recording set up than I do. I just have a little Mini Disc Mic and recorder.

I'll keep your advice in mind. I've been told several times to do my songs the separate track way. And yeah, I bet it would sound a lot better. Maybe one day I'll actually do recordings that way. But right now I'm more concerned about performing in live audiences. Not that I have or will, I think its a better chance of that happening than me actually getting some sort of recording deal. To be honest I actually tried the seperate track recording of my voice and a guitar last week. I felt so uncomfortable I wanted to shoot myself. I have this problem with improvising songs differently everytime I play it. So actually having a structural composed song and singing to it is not what I'm used to.

Well, I guess I'm in a band now. I have a drummer and I might get a solo guitarist in the mix. But only time will tell if that happens.

That's great that you're going to be in a band. Some different perspectives can often really help a piece of music out a lot.

I am primarily a drummer, and I had a tough time adapting to using a click-track at first. Now, I have no idea how I ever made it without using one!

It's all a learning experience. Have fun with it, and good luck. It's a dog eat dog world out there with live gigs. You'll need all the luck you can get.

A little update on the band situation. I now have a bass player and a drummer... and quiet possibly a lead guitarist. Its just dependent on if he gets to record his tracks with my mix.

I had a discussion with my drummer today after practice. We still really need to work on getting the music as a whole together. As in practicing together.

But we did get to accomplish the way I want each song to be played (drum wise). Getting the bass player was the easy thing, although I have yet to hear him play. He says he is able to play to my songs. Its supposedly going to be composed together on different tracks at my drummers house. Which I doubt he will actually finish it... I'll be back to review and add my input on Wednesday. Most likely he won't have the studio ready. I can only hope.

. I was in an all girl band years ago. Not that it wasn't great... but I was just a drummer/backup singer. I had almost no creative input in that band. This new band is... mine... they want to play my songs. As egotistical as that sounds, they came to me wanting to start a band. I just thought about cruising by completely solo and it turns out... people find me.

Well, things are getting better... I was offered to play as an opening act for a local singer/songwriter by the name of Perry Allen in the Phoenix area. The gigs will be in the beginning of Janurary. I'm not sure if I'll be flying solo or if my drummer is going to be accompanying me. It is really dependent on if he can play to my songs by then. Practice, practice, practice...

I guess for those of you who will be in the area at that time can see me play... I'm actually getting nervous about it. The shows will be in small venues, which is nice. Considering I would probably have a panic attack if it was an actual concert. I am very anti-social [Frown]
