This has got to be one of the saddest stories I've heard about in quite some time. My feelings really go out to the family of the girl and her Aunt in whos car her coat became accidentally caught....

Yes I heard this sort of story before , but the parent was lucky that the child was only injured , so this story is sad ==

Girl dies after being dragged three miles by car Associated Press

CEDAR CITY , Utah — A girl died after her coat got caught in a car door and she was dragged for about three miles on rural roads.
The girl, thought to be 7 years old, was dropped off by a relative at a rural bus stop before 8 a.m. MST Tuesday. While waiting for a bus, Iron County Deputy Sheriff Michael Crouch said another relative drove up to a nearby mailbox.
The girl went to that car and asked the relative for a ride to school as she climbed into the back seat.
However, Crouch said the relative told the girl she didn't have time to drive five miles into town, and the girl got out of the vehicle.
"She apparently became caught and tangled," Crouch said. "The relative was not aware this had happened and drove off with the little girl caught in the rear passenger door."
The driver went about three miles before Crouch said a witness stopped them. The driver then put the girl in the back seat and drove to a nearby phone for help.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Crouch said he is not aware if officials are considering charges against the driver, but noted the department is early in the investigatrion. "At this point, it appears to be a tragic accident."
Crouch said a crisis team has been called in to help family members. "Obviously, everybody's upset."
The sheriff's office is not releasing the girl's name until other relatives are notified. They also are not releasing the names or relationships of the two drivers until they have investigated further, Crouch said.
The accident happened on a rural road that intersects with state Highway 56 near Cedar City, which is about 220 miles south of Salt Lake City.

I guess this could be blamed on a malfunctioning mirror. That is pretty sad. Almost as bad as leaving babies in cars.

As you could well imagine, everyone involved would be most distraught. Its simply tragic.

I would make a very interesting legal case. How far does a drivers duty of care to others extend in this situation? Did the driver do everything in their power to ensure the passenger was safe?
