OK....fine. However, my experience with running a setup again with windows 3.** already installed caused the computer to hang up. So I don't want to take a chance on doing that for two reasons:

1. This computer has great sentimental value to me, and I want to keep it running as long as I possibly can under the DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 enviroment. It was the first "real computer" I ever had, and it was built and given to me as a birthday present by a very close friend of mine about 8 years or so ago.

2. There is a Gravis Ultra-Sound card in that machine, and I have to admit it is the most beautiful sounding soundcard I have ever used for both DOS and Windows applications. I do not want to take a chance and blow that thing off because when the card was purchased, Gravis did a poor job in writing the software. It took days to debug it, and it is a bitch to load. I do have the software for it on floppy disks, but I don't have the debugging instructions anymore.

I think I will make a back-up hard drive or it in case I screw it up, but I still need to know how to get rid of the insult. The friend of mine who built this thing when he was 16 years old is now a computer consultant in Japan, so communicating is difficult.

Hey Paul, I have an old computer here with a 3.11 windows for work groups on it. My thinking is you may have to go into the the configuration or auto exec file to see if there is anything related to networking listed and turn it off. Another possability is you may have to edit the system ini or windows ini files to remove anything related to networking using DOS to edit in order to get windows to load. That is the only things I could think of right now. That computer is not hooked up right now so I can't check it to be sure.

Put a network card back in it. Any NE2000 compatible card will probably work.

The land of Windows 1.0 thru 3.11 seems to have escaped my mind at the present time, so I can't recall exactly which files need to be modified. Poke around the few .ini files and you'll probably find it though.

A question though, does Windows refuse to completely load, or is it just bugging you with the error message?

If you don't get it fixed, let us know. I've got all my Windows 1.0 thru 3.11 books and manuals in Midland... I might be back up there within the next month.

Gravis made good hardware. Their joysticks kicked much ass. Actually their first 3 button joystick was the last joystick I owned. I guess I haven't played any games in quite a long time.

Their soundcard was also damn good, nearly as good as Adlib's Adlib Gold 8 bit, mono, sound card. That card was awesome. I think it had about 1000 watts of power output.

You should be able to remove all network related settings from within the control panel, since Windows is actually loading.

It's still all a foggy abyss to me though.

Jeeze, that Ultra-Sound card is really cool. The low end on stereo play is awesome. Makes any Creative Labs Soundblaster sound like a Hunk Of S***!

I figured it out. It was very simple. In the Main Window of the Program manager, there is an icon that says Windows Setup. Clicking on that, and then options, check the box with No Network Windows Support. It'll now make a new set of INI files, and blow the orignal ones into a *.000. The new files the computer made has all the network stuff removed.

Sounded too easy, but it worked great. The computer now runs like a champ. Thanks to Darryl and Daryl. Your comments triggered a half-groggy memory that was covered with dust.

Well, it is like this....I was going to fry one drive to another, but something happened and I lost the whole shebang!!!

So, starting from "Punch" I got the drive re-established, formatted, and up and running. After several attemps to get the Gravis card running, I was not having any luck at all!!

Luckly, I made a copy of the win.ini, system.ini, autoexec.bat and config.sys files onto a floppy. After comparing what was with what is, many modifications were needed to the what is file. I had to load the drivers manually. Copied my modified files back to the hard drive, and up she came!!!

Jeeze....I played a wav file - it still beats Soundblaster all to pieces even while running in DOS 16-bit 44100 sampling rate glitch free and crystal clear.

It was well worth the effort.

Actually, I was screwing around with it for 3 days now trying to get it running. I would have been screwed if I had not made a backup of the files when the machine ran.
