All Scream For Ice-Screen
2/20/2002

PITEAA, SWEDEN--Resident of the Swedish town of Piteaa, located about 465 miles north of Stockholm, have not let a little thing like below-freezing weather stop them from enjoying movies in the great outdoors. Instead, Piteaa moviegoers have used snow and ice to their advantage by constructing a 16-by-13-foot screen out of the winter elements.

The drive-in, which opened in March, can be accessed by snowmobiles. Like cars at a traditional ozoner, drivers simply park their winter vehicles in front of the screen and enjoy the show.

Substituting for a projection room is a wooden outhouse, where a wide-screen video machine has been installed to project film onto the ice-screen. The outdoor cinema even has a concession stand in the form of a tent, which offers patrons the local favorite of stir-fried potato dumplings.

Town native and project leader Birgitta Elfgren told local reporters that she has long dreamed of an operational drive-in for Piteaa. Elfgren also said that she hoped the ozoner would attract snowmobilers for miles around before warmer weather sets in and melts the screen. --Francesca Dinglasan
