On June 22 I leave to go on a trek described elsewhere on this forum. That’s 61 days from today. Today at 6’4”, I weigh 307 lbs, which they tell me is a good 100 lbs overweight. My mother is concerned that I will suffer a heart attack between the 100-degree heat and the high altitude of where I’m going. She implored me to get in to shape before I go on this trip.

Today I did 45 minutes of yoga, jogged 20 minutes very slowly and rode my bike down to the river and back, perhaps 4 miles total.

My goal is to do something physical each of the next 61 days.

I’m not going to diet, but I’m going to try not to overeat.

Today’s intake:

Glass of grapefruit Juice
Handful of chocolate covered cherries
Baked Potato w/pat of butter and teaspoon of sour cream
Steamed Broccoli
Diet Pepsi
1 lg Cookie
2 Diet Cokes @ work
Small Chicken Caesar Salad w/3 bread sticks.

Tips?
Taunts?
Rants?
Suggestions?
Sympathy?

Should I join a gym?
Should I sign up for Weight Watchers?
Did Dr. Adkins die from his diet?

Ah to see 250 again.

Ian, The Atkins diet does work. No he didn't die from it.

I was 30 pounds overweight to enlist in the Navy. I started his diet Jan 1'st 2003. by Feb 6th 2003, I lost 35 pounds. I was never hungry. I ate McDonalds, BK, etc. I had a lot of steak. You need to get the book. However, the first two weeks ARE BRUTAL. You are lessining your carb intake to 20 grams a day. EX. 20 grams of carbs=1 can of Dr. Pepper. I know you can do it Ian. I'm 6'6 and now at a nice 213 pounds from 260+. Good Luck

Sure, Atkins died from his diet. If his diet includes slipping on ice and cracking your head on the pavement hard enough to make you fall into a coma and die shortly thereafter...though that probably wouldn't be the most popular diet out there. Would bring a new meaning to the word diet though, I suppose...

I wonder, since lowering your carbs forces your body to burn fat for energy instead of the simple and complex carbs your body would normally use. What is that doing to your keytone levels in your body. Keytones are developed in the body when the body uses fat cells for fuel. If this level becomes high it can be serious on the human body. Another thing once you lose your pounds what happens if your carb intake increases, not a dessert binge or anything just an increase. Will the body suddenly start using carbs again and stop using fat causing your fat levels to increase and what about cholesterol issues. Nice to be thin but not with clogged arteries.

I was in the same boat, I started my program at 304 and I'm 6'3". and I'm currently 232 pounds or so. I'd cut back on sugar as much as you can, and limit your carbs as well. You can loose weight on Atkins, etc, without exercise, but it's highly recommended that you do workout at least 30 min a day. The best time to do cardio is in the morning on an empty stomach, so I read. Obviously not at an extreme intensity level, but this seems to work great for me. Limit your carbs later in the day, eat most of them earlier in the day. Drink at least 1 gallon of water a day. Stay away from hydrogenated oils as well. Although Atkins doesn't recommend most vegetables (during induction) I had no trouble during the first 2 weeks eating a plate of mixed veggies (carrots, broccoli, etc). Also, take a before and after picture, that will keep you motivated as soon as you get to a lower level of weight.

The best "eating method" I found is Food Combining as suggested in the book "Fit For Life". I went from 310 lbs to a 92 pound weaking in 37 days.

Seriously, when I did the food combining technique, I weighed 170, had much energy, and felt really good.

Now, since I'm doing the FF junkie bit, I weigh 176, need eye-glasses, constipated, and generally feel really shitty! [Big Grin]

(BTW: Before I get some lame remarks from SOME of yous... "FF" in this context means Fast Food!)

Whether you're on the Atkins diet or not, it is generally a good idea to stay very far away from foods sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

The food industry loves using high fructose corn syrup to sweeten all kinds of things. It is the main ingredient (after water) in any non-diet soda. Lots of reports have come out lately blaming this single ingredient on the rate spike of obesity in America over the last 30 years. In this time, the food industry changed over from cane sugars and beet sugars to cheaper high fructose corn syrup as its sweetener of choice.

Since I hit my mid 30's, I started pounding up a bit. The prospect of having to buy a bunch of larger sized clothes did not seem very appealing, so I cut out the regular Coca-Cola I used to drink all the time. It didn't take long to get back to previous waist sizes.

Your body is going to burn whatever is easiest to burn. Fat is the hardest "fuel" to burn. When you start eating more carbs and protein the body goes after those fuels instead.

I, too, am concerned about the cholesterol raising issues of the Atkins diet. I'm a fairly slender guy, but my total cholesterol is just under 220, which is borderline bad. Fruits and whole grains have carbs in them, but they also have fiber. That reduces cholesterol. So, I've had to go in another direction. I'm eating less meat and more in the way of fruits, whole grains and veggies. And I'm trying to cut out anything loaded with high fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oils. Frankly, I don't think the food industry should be allowed to put either of those ingredients in our foods. IMHO, it's every bit as bad as giving everyone a smoking habit.

Ian,

You have a sensible & caring Mom!
Drastic weight loss should be under a doctor's guidance. Your MD will probably recommend a thorough blood analysis to start, and a monitoring of your blood pressure throughout. And perhaps an EKG and stress test should any regularities in your heartbeat
be noticed.

Avoidance of alcohol would be sensible, and in India the food has an intoxicating effect besides. I felt giddy and slightly dizzy after a sumtuous repast in India, without alcohol, which was hard to come by anyway. Daily downpours, temperatures above 100'F and 100% humidity are best endured with small meals and mid-day siestas during monsoon.

I avoided milk in tea, which in Nepal is cream from the milk
of water buffalos or yaks, with a very high fat content, not pasteurized and perhaps partly fermented. But tea, which requires boiling water, is preferable to cold drinks. Beverage sellers on the street have been known to fill their bottles in the basement, as can be detected when they save the rusty caps. I ate only in air-conditioned restaurants in India. Cheaper restaurants added so much chili to even scrambled eggs as to burn a hole in one's stomach.

Best wishes for success in your diet-plus-exercise regimen!

Gerard

Wow, that's showing restraint compared to me. I'm utterly addicted to the things, and eat between three and five pink or red grapefruits in a typical day (don't like the yellow ones - they're tasteless). I'm sure a researcher at some university will publish findings suggesting that this is really bad for my health one day, though. All that citric acid must be rotting something or other.

I don't think my diet is too bad. I'm allergic to saturated dairy fat, meaning that I cannot touch anything containing butter or cheese without a very nasty reaction. My protein of choice is fish anyway (simply because I like the taste of it more than most meat), and I really like green veggies. So in terms of cholestorol I don't think I have a big problem.

The one issue I probably do need to look at is alcohol, of which I probably consume well over the government's recommended limit (for an adult male) of 21 units per week. Although I hardly drink at all on a weekday evening (driving at 0610 the following day rules that out), several ginormous G & Ts are my weekend stress relief device of choice.

Have fun in India! A spicy prawn balti would be just up my street. That having been said, an Indian expat friend recently told me that, having recently returned from a visit home, she thought the Indian restaurants in Yorkshire actually produced better 'Indian' food than the ones in its country of origin! Figure that out...

Ian,

I was going to suggest to you the "Half a Million Dollar Diet" that both me and my wife went on last year when we opened the drive-in. Since you own and operate your own theatre, you've probably already been on it for several years.

It wasn't an intentional diet for us, but the pounds did come off. Somewhere between the stress of opening the theatre, dealing with the contractors, bankers, suppliers, the first two months of operation... I actually lost 35 pounds, and my wife lost close to 25. I was at 235, and have leveled off at 200, and lost 4 inches in the waist.

Ian,

I can in a way feel where you are coming from...I was healthy my whole high school career..I was a football player, powerlifter, wrestler...all that...then I became a manger at my theater. I don't know what it is, but I think we have one of the highest levels of over weight people(besides cubicle jockies) in the work force. Anyway, long story short, I went from being 5' 8" and 145 to being 5' 8" and 190 in a couple of months.

I agree...you need to see a doctor and that doctor needs to be kept up to date all the way through the diet.

The only bad part about the Atkins diet is that yes...it is "ok" to eat a bowl of bacon in the morning for breakfast...why??? becuase old Doc Atkins was had most people so hooked that they didn't take the time to stop and say "lets look at the saturated fats..nope, all they cared about was low carbs.

One of the other managers I work with was a good 50 pounds over weight and he just basically started eating healthy...when he was hungry for sugar he ate an orange or apple..it was rough for about two weeks, but once you get your body used to a different kind of food intake you will do fine. I would look into exercising with friends...I do it and it alwasy is easier and more enjoyable when you have others there to motivate you when the going gets tough. I took what he did and built on that. I don't have time to cook meals or make salads so I went to my local SAM'S and got some precooked chicken breasts and some mixed veggies and I would put two or three portions into plastic bags, then throughout the day when I was hungry I would eat some fruit and other healthy stuff then when I went to work i would grab one or two of the baggies from the freezer...I would put them up at work, then when i had a brake I would pop then in the microwave for three mins....some salt and pepper and i had a body healthy meal that wouldn't give me heart attack in 30 years with the Doc Atkins diet..withe excerise I am down to 165 and on my way back to where i need to be.

One more note on the excerise...you have a good amount to loose, but as someone else said, take a picture and then compare. So many people get hung up on the weight lose aspect that they don't focus on the body change aspect...yes you will loose a lot of weight, but with the excerise you will gain muscle which may slow your "weight" loose, but you are becoming healthier..so focus on that and good luck!!

Atkins and other crap fad diets are just that... [bs] !

How to loose weight...simple...

Cutting out all of the junk food on a daily basis.

Like nicotine or alcohol, junk food and soda pop can be addictive. Nothing wrong with a little junk food once in a while just to settle that craving. But I will state this with authority: once you are on a healthy diet, the junk food will not react well with your body, and can make you feel quite ill!

Constantly "snacking" on healthy food throughout the day so that you never feel hungry. One of the worst things you can do to your body is overeating in one meal!

Excersise!

I literally lost over 60lbs in three months by simply changing my diet and doing an hours worth of aerobics (tread-mill, stationary bicycle and stair climber) every day.

And btw, Atkins says carbs are no good? [bs] 'n HORSEHOCKEY! I would ensure that I ate healty carbs prior to my workout, which provided me with energy, then would have a light healthy meal following.

Counting calories is no big deal. You should be able to determine you daily caloric needs by your age, gender and height/general structure. Keeping within the daily requirements is no big deal to figure out.

The amount of weight you loose within a given period of time should be controlled! You should combine other forms of excersise with your aerobic routine to help tighten up skin as you loose weight.

Fact of life: sometimes obese people who have really slimmed down may need to have that excessive skin that wont tighten up surgically removed.

I find Chris Medley's methods most practical, and similar to those my wife developed for our family. Chris "gives good guidance."

As for using a scale to measure weight loss, a PSA on radio cautions that you may be measuring mere water loss. A better indication is seeing how your clothes fit--when your pants hang loose at the waist and thighs, you've lost excess fat.

The problem is most people don't understand the Atkins diet, having just heard second hand info from the media, etc. He never says it's ok to eat a bowl of bacon for breakfast. And Will, he doesn't say all carbs are bad. He says a low carb diet. Meaning you up your carb intake until you are maintaining your weight (during the last phase).

Day 3:

I have no interest in the Atkins Diet except to comment that it seems to be very popular right now.

Exercise so far:

Yesterday I took a 45-minute hike, stroll or as I call it, a trudge trough the local park. There is a paved path right through the center of the park and a dirt trail that goes over hill and dale around the perimeter of the park. It's enough to get me sweaty and breathing a bit.

This morning I took a 2-mile jog on a river path by my house in Cloverdale. I made it about 1 2/3 mile before succumbing to walking. There was a guy walking 4 miniature dogs along the trail, I'm guessing I was 10% faster than he was. I passed him going one way at the 1/2-mile mark and I passed him again when I turn around at the 1 1/8 mark. My butt hurts, my feet stink and I don't love Jesus.

Yesterday I joined Weight Watchers. They have the best reputation and the longest record of success over time. Their general concept is portion control and emotional support. I discovered reading their material that I eat about 4 standard portions of any food I eat.

I discovered that my breakfast yesterday at a normal coffee shop was about half of my allowed points per day. I had two poached eggs, 3 strips of bacon, 2 slices of toast with butter and marmalade, small bowl of fruit, half of the mistakenly delivered hash browns, cup of coffee and 4 standard servings of grapefruit juice. The standard serving of juice for breakfast is 1/2 cup. I had the large, which is 16 oz or 4 times the standard serving.

This morning I had 1 poached egg, 1 English muffin, 1/2-cup grapefruit juice and the giant cup of coffee. I tried to make a 1/4-cup of oatmeal but that didn't work. So I used 1/5 of my total points for the day for breakfast so lunch and dinner can be 2/5 each.

Weight day 3: 298 lbs.

Way to go, Ian! [thumbsup]
Sounds like you're off to a great start and doing stuff that's fun and outdoors. That will keep you motivated.

I wish I had the motivation to do something about MY weight.
I'm way under what I'm supposed to be. People accuse me of not eating and such. I'm 6'3" 150lbs.

Food intake yesterday: Two bowls (probably 4 servings) of Kellog's Honey Smacks with milk, 2 pieces of the Colonel's Original Recipie with cole slaw, potatoes and a biscuit and a large Dr. Pepper, then a steak and cheese quesadilla with large nachos and salsa and a large coke. Then a Nathan's hotdog and a steady flow of soda from the fountain at work.

Exercise yesterday: Nothing, really. Just walking at work.
Weight today: 148! [Confused]

What am I doing wrong?

Still trying to eat right. Still exercising every day. This morning I shoveled decomposed granite for two hours. I think the pile of decomposed granite will last me all week. [Eek!]

From what I have read, it should take me a year to pull off all this weight. As they say, it took you 20-years to put on this weight, it might take a while to pull it off. But remember my short-term goal is to pull off 20 lbs in 60-days.

I went to my second Weight Watcher's meeting. I have spent the week religiously sticking to my "points."

I have been very active this week. Not only have I been jogging, bicycling and taking walks, but also I have been shoveling 6 cubic yards of decomposed granite in to my back yard. I'm about half done with that little project so I'm guessing that it is going to provide 4-more days of exertion.

The upshot is 289 lbs, a loss of 9.8 lbs from week #1. This is a loss rate I cannot maintain or I would weigh nothing in 30-days. [Wink] I'm sure I will soon ratchet down to the recommended 2 lbs loss per week.

Fast food tip o' the week: 6" Subway Turkey sandwich with all the vegetables and no mayonnaise. (5 points) I think I will go get one now. [Big Grin]

Why do limes cost more that soda pop?

I stopped drinking soda at work and started drinking soda water with a squeeze of lime. Today I bought a few limes to keep at work and they were 50-cents apiece. What makes limes special?

Why is bottled water more expensive than gasoline?

I am beginning to think that one of the reasons that people eat in an unhealthy way in this country is that fast food, soda pop and prepared dinners are priced so low that it is more economical to eat at a fast food restaurant than to cook for yourself. Obesity in America may be as much an economic thing as it is a health or psychological thing.

But sticking to water and cutting out the fast food helped a lot. I am not a big believer in all of this diet of the day shit. Just eat semi sensibly and cut out the pop plus even a little exercise each day does wonders. Try those plastic limes with the juice inside you get at the grocery store. It is not fresh but you will get the flavor all the same and it beats plain water. I am sitting at my desk with a 64 oz coke in front of me. It is full and I am gonna go dump it right now and get some water. Seriously, you have inspired me. Thanks buddy! [thumbsup]

Way to go Dominique.

Progress at the end of week 2: 282.6 lbs.
I lost 6.4 lbs this week.
Total loss of 16.2 lbs with Weight Watchers in two weeks.

The landscaping is done, so no more shoveling granite. I guess I'll have to join a gym.

Last night I had miniature lamb chops, or as I call them Lamb-cicles.

Tip o' the week: McDonalds sells Kiddy Ice Cream Cones for $27-Cents. 2-Points.

Next week we open the film Super Size Me and I handed out promotional post cards at the Weight Watcher's meeting.

Dominique you should consider switching to diet soda if you can't kick the soda habit. Supposedly sodas sweetened with Splenda have a lesser effect on blood sugar, but I myself really haven't noticed a difference. Also consider some of the "splash" drinks you can get at costco and hi health, they are great.

FIFTY CENTS for limes?!?! Jeezus...

They're 10 for a dollar here, and that's when they're NOT on sale. Send me your address, Ian and I'll ship you a case. [Smile]

Progress at the end of week 3: 278.2 lbs.
I lost 4.4 lbs this week.
Total loss of 20.6 lbs with Weight Watchers in 3-weeks.

Was able to jog 3-miles on Tuesday. Wednesday I rode my bike to work.

Thursday we had an event here at the theatre for the Sonoma County Bike Coalition. 170 people rode their bikes to the theatre for a free screening of The Triplets of Bellville.

(170 bikes parked in 8-parking spaces)

Super Size Me isn't turning out to be the hit here at the Rialto that we were hoping for. I'm guessing that it doesn't appeal to our old people.

Tip O' The Week: One cookie from our concession stand weighs 2.5 oz and is worth 7 Weight Watcher points! [Eek!] That represents 23% of my total intake of food.

I read a funny review of Super Size Me, where they said this guy exagerates some times. I remember they said something like after the 3rd day of his checkup he was having problems already, is this true? Now I can imagine after 30 days you have serious problems but 3?

I stopped by the Rialto over the weekend to abuse my semi-professional/rental-car-parking-lot-donut-spinning friendship with Ian on Sunday.

I felt awful for not being able to stay and chat, but my movie was starting? What do ya do? Ian was kind enough to walk me and my guest to my auditorium (where the newly replaced bulb made for a fantastic image).

Until Ian had mentioned it, I had totally had forgotten this thread, and really didn't realize he had lost weight (he's still insanely tall after-all). But he looks nice and healthy... and looking healthy is difficult to accomplish when taking weight off.

Keep it up bruva. [thumbsup]

Progress at the end of week 4: 272.8 lbs.
I lost 5.4 lbs this week.
Total loss of 26 lbs with Weight Watchers in 4-weeks.

I thought I might have been overdosing on vegetables this week. I ate at Pluto's in the city and ordered three vegetable dishes and it was so good I ate everything. I don't know how to calculate it on the point scale. Then I was eating lunch at the Sonoma Taco Shop and had the McDougall* Vegan Burrito smothered. It was huge and again I ate the whole thing. Then I had the Benevolent Burrito from Amazon Burrito and again I couldn't stop and ate the whole thing. But I still lost 5-pounds this week.

Tip 'o the week: Vegetarian Burritos with lots of salsa are a guilt-free indulgence. Just skip the cheese, guacamole and sour cream.

* Dr McDougall is a health nut who runs a clinic in St. Helena in the Napa valley who advocates a vegan diet for people. He has convinced several Taquerias in the area to carry a vegan menu as well as their regular menu. At lunch the other day I saw lots of fat people ordering their food McDougall style. Sonoma Taco Shop is also kind enough to publish a nutrition guide for their menu.

Don't worry, I have no intention of becoming a vegitarian or shudder a vegan. I like my meat, I just have to like less of it.

Mike, way to go! [thumbsup] I'm betting that those last few pounds are the hardest to loose.

So last night I went to Teatro Zinzanni. It's a show that plays in a 90-year-old tent down on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. It is a combination of Dinner, Cabaret, and Cirque Du Soleil.

I went in to dinner with a plan, I would eat half of everything.

Yea, that didn't work. I ate everything placed in front of me. From the Smoked Salmon Mousse with Toast Points, Olives and Almonds, To the Roast Tomato Soup with Basil Crostinini, to the Bay Shrimp Salad, to the Medallions of Lamb with Asparagus, Rice and some little Leek Custard amusement, to the Lemon Brulee Tart with strawberries, 2 Glasses of wine and 2 Coffees, I ate it all! [Eek!]

Later that night I sat down and tried to figure out what it cost me in Weight Watcher points. I figured that it was a solid 70! [Eek!] I am allowed 30 points a day and 35 Flex Points a week. I usually don't eat the Flex Points so I had 30 left. So last night I went 55 points over my daily total and in using the 30 was 25 points over.

My stomach was stuffed and tight. It took 12-hours, 8-hours of sleep, a 2-mile jog and a bit of yoga to begin to feel normal again.

Oh well, I'm back on track today. So I'll stick to it till my birthday dinner next week when I think I will tie one on again.
[Big Grin]

The last few are impossible (well not really but you know...)! I was stuck at or around 235 for like 6 weeks then finally got down to what I am now. Don't worry about that meal you had. You should actually allow yourself a cheat meal once a week or so, and if you go overboard, just put in a little more exercise to burn off the excess calories. Heck, Thursday morning and afternoon I did well, but come Thursday evening, I had a bananna around 5pm, then had my dinner which consisted of a large chili from Wendys, 6 piece nugget (wendy's) AND one of those slightly larger than personal sized frozen pizzas by Totino's. Yet, I still lost weight over the weekend. Thankfully I dont have many meals like that very often.

Well, in spite of that huge Saturday meal, I managed to lose 2.4 lbs in 3-days. I had to go to Weight Watchers early this week as I am going to Maine and Washington DC tomorrow.

Tomorrow is my 42nd birthday. Because of the trip, I won't be posting for a while.

Tip o' the next 2-weeks: Applebee's has a new Weight Watchers menu.

Well I couldn't maintain my diet on the Schooner Lewis R. French. Jeff the Chef's cooking was too good. I ate double portions of everything.

The wind was gusting to 35 knots and we were sailing under double reefed sails. Boy it was fun. [Big Grin]

I went to Weight Watcher's in Washington DC to discover the damage.

Progress at the end of week 6: 272.2 lbs.
I gained 1.8 lbs this week. [Mad]
Total loss of 26.6 lbs with Weight Watchers in 6-weeks.

I attempted to get back on track in Washinton DC. I went jogging on the mall with all the Army and Marine guys. Boy can they run. [Eek!] Washington sure has a lot of security. You have to go trough a magnatron and get searched just to go in to the Botanical Gardens. [Roll Eyes]

I know he doesn't post here much, but it is Ky Boyd's (my business partner) 40th birthday today. Happy Birthday Ky! [thumbsup]

I'm back from India, Nepal & Tibet.

I ate Indian vegetarian food for the first 14-days. After that I discovered that eating with the Tibetan drivers was more entertaining. Every stop we would have Yak Butter Tea and Thukpa, which is basically Chinese/Tibetan Ramen Noodles. Once I had Thukpa with canned Yak Meat. It was a little fatty. On our final 6-days in India we were staying at the Taj group of hotels and eating the breakfast buffet every day. I felt like I ate like a pig, but I was having trouble eating with the 104 degree temperature outside.

In Tibet we rode in a car for 13-days but at every stop I would try to go on a hike with Payal or our guide Vineeta. At one point Vineeta and I walked up a 100-foot sand dune. For our trek we walked 20-kilometers per day for three days at altitude. At one point I walked over a 19,500-foot pass.

I went to Weight Watchers this morning and discovered that I had lost an additional 11.6 lbs. [thumbsup] I have lost a total of 40 lbs since starting this adventure 3 1/2 months ago.

Biggest discovery in India: Fresh Lime Soda. Squeeze one lime, add soda water and sugar or salt to taste. So refreshing! [Smile] I would have 3 at every meal.

Tip O' The Week: In spite of the ghee and oil, everybody loses weight in India. [Big Grin]

Now the trick will be to continue to be motivated. My prime motivation, the trip to India, is over. So now I must set a new goal.

Week 16
Lost 6.2 lbs this week
Lost a total of 56 lbs in 16 weeks for an average of 3.5 lbs per week.
Weight this week, 242.8 lbs, takes some cloths off and that would be 240 lbs!

Weight Watchers states that one should average 2 lbs loss per week. I attribute my accelerated weight loss to my overall large size and to my increased activity level. I’m guessing that going from no physical activity to jogging three times per week is quite dramatic.

My starting weight was around 300 lbs.
My official Weight Watchers goal is 230 lbs.
My unofficial goal is 220 lbs.

I want to go skydiving. My local skydiving school has a tandem jump weight limit of 225 lbs, so getting under that limit would be the goal. I was 220 lbs through collage and much of my twenties, so I don’t think that is an unreachable goal.

The only pisser is that now that I have gotten down to less than 250 lbs, my daily “points” intake went from 30 points to 28 points. And when I get to less than 225 lbs it is supposed to drop from 28 point down to 26 points.

The good news is that you can eat points gained from exercising. I haven’t done that yet. I will start eating my exercising points once I have reached goal and start the “maintenance phase” of my weight management.

When I started this weight loss my refrain was “Ah to see 250 again.” My new refrain will be “Never see 250 again.” I need to think of an upper limit so when I bounce back to that weight I get back with the program.

Tip O’ The Week: Juice Shack Smoothies can be a light and tasty snack. My 16 oz Rebel Berry Smoothie was only 150 calories and worth 2 Weight Watcher points.

Week 18
Today's Weight 236.0
Lost this week 4.6
Total lost 62.8

This week I am headed off to the Telluride Film Festival. I have been going since 1990. My radio handle there is "Large." I hope that they are all surprised that I have lost more than 60 lbs.

 -

This week Weight Watchers launched a new program. It's called the Turn Around plan. It offers two ways to eat. The first way is the Flex Plan that uses "points" to track your food intake. The new method is called the Core Plan. Weight Watchers enrolment has declined recently due to everybody’s obsession with the Atkins Carb thing. So their research told them that some people don't like Weight Watchers because they find the point system and writing down everything you eat to be complicated. So they have created a "core" list of food that you can safely eat off of and still lose weight. You're not supposed to over-indulge in eating but of you eat off of this list you aren't supposed to get fat.

I like the old system so I am going to stick with it for a while longer, at least until I reach goal. I still want to lose 16 lbs.

I bought these pants at Costco recently. When I got them home I tried them on and thought that they were just a bit too slim for my tastes. Yesterday I wanted to wear pants to work instead of shorts and all of my old pants were too large to wear so I wore these instead. They weren't too slim anymore. However I did have to carry my keys and wallet in a bag so not to ruin the silhouette of these trousers.

Tip o' the week: Just because it's new, doesn't make it better.

I’m back from the 31st Telluride Film Festival. I was put up in a private home with my roommate Tom. The home is owned by Cynthia, a Le Cordon Bleu and Ritz, trained French chef. Every time Tom and I would say, "I wonder what time the cafeteria closes", Cynthia would say something like, "but I have a brisket in the oven, please stay for dinner." Tom and I would run out and buy wine and vegetables to go with the brisket. She also did an Osso Bucco for dinner one night.

Well due to Cynthia's good cooking, the morning bacon & English muffin sandwich on the way the Gondola and Bertrand's crepes, I gained 5 lbs my 10-days in Telluride. I hadn't been running and I didn't watch my diet in Telluride. I thought that I might have been getting enough exercise by hoofing it to the gondola in the morning and running up and down stairs in the theatres. I guess it points out that I will always have to watch my diet. I was hoping that I hadn't gone up that much. We'll see if I pull off 5-lbs in one week or two or three weeks.

Here is a photo of the Happy Acme Projection Booth Crew opening night of the festival.

 -

Large Ian, Payal (Whom I went to India with), Ryan (Who is the projectionist for the Pavilion 15 in downtown Denver) and Peter (Who lives “off the grid” in Taos and runs a film series there)

Relish this photo, I don't appear in a tie that often. Tom bought 30 Bugs Bunny ties at the dollar store in Los Angeles and we gave them to all of the staff of the Chuck Jones Cinema.

Saturday afternoon it snowed 3-inches in Telluride. This had the effect of driving all the people in to the theatres and we sold out all the shows Saturday and Sunday. I ended up buying $60 fleece pants at Memorabilia because I was wearing shorts that day.

 -

Tip O’ The Week: I am powerless when faced with an attractive widow who is a good cook!

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 09-11-2004, 10:37 PM:

Looks like Peter is on the grid now. We even have his pic with hints on his whereabouts! Ha ha! And be sure to show Ryan the pictures I took of the Pavilions 15 when I was there (called in from Mann Theatres to change a xenon bulb for manager Tim Campbell). The pics are here on this site. I did not write those captions otherwise I would have said much about projectionist negligence. Also there was another loose print on the table in a different area of the booth that same day (Sunday evening). Oh man the booth was one of the most disastrous I had ever seen, especially in a first run house. Hopefully it has improved significantly.

Week 24, 230 lbs! [Big Grin]
Pounds lost so far: 68
Pounds left to lose: 10

Way back in the beginning of this thread I thought I would like to lose 20 lbs. Now I have lost 3-times that amount. I'm on my second pair of jeans since I've started this. I can no longer wear the last pair I purchased. Random customers are now stopping me in the lobby and commenting.

I feel pretty good today because I was very well behaved this week. But I have been up and down these past 4-weeks.

Last week I learned that yes, that one big dinner will put a crimp in your weight loss plans. I really have to be more agressive in a restaurant to get my meal to be less weighty. Once it is placed in front of me, it's eaten.

Tip O' The Week: This week I have been having fun with whole wheat tortillas. A small wrap turkey sandwich made with a tortilla is less than a conventional sandwich made with slices of bread. I also made tortilla pizza with slivered up vegetables.

Some challenges I have to look forward too are a visit to my father and Show East where I will be fed breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week. I have to come up with a strategy to not blow it there.

Mike Heenan, way to go! [thumbsup] So how did you do it? And how will you maintain it?

Had to weigh one of the cats the other day, so weighed myself too. Down to 166 now (me, not the cat) by just walking to school and smaller portions. Will start swimming again next month. Would still like to get down to 150 by new year and I think I may just make it. The porker cat is at 13.

Hi Ian its been fairly easy doing it so far, Ive never gained a pound since I started losing though I have maintained my weight for weeks at a time with no loss mostly due ot working out with weights I think. I just eat the right way now, instead of splurging on snacking alot. Thats what really got me, that and inactivity. Working out at least an hour a day several days a week combined with a low carb diet really took the weight off fast. My goal is if Im ever at least 3 pounds heavier than my last weight then its time to go back to low carb diet.

Just got back from my Eurotrip for 3 weeks, and lost another 5 pounds, down to 210 right now. I guess it was all that walking, I walked around Den Haag the last day for like 6 hours, nonstop almost. Great walking towns (among other things!) were Amsterdam and Rome. Nice and compact somewhat, so no need for car or bus even, for the most part. I thought I would go crazy with the food but I was able to watch what I ate, except for a few meals here and there.

Just got back from Show East in Orlando.

Weight Gain for the week, 8 lbs!

I have no self control. [Frown]

I found that I couldn't control myself at the luncheons and the dinners. I also had a popcorn at every screening. So I went from eating no popcorn to having three bags per day. I also discovered Nerd Ropes and became hopelessly addicted to them before I ate 3 in a row and they started to taste like chemicals.

My only philosophy now is what I put on in a week, I can take off in a week. Tune in next week to see how much I have lost.

Ian, I would switch to organic popcorn (or even the regular low fat popcorn which is a little bit cheaper, but contains partially hydrogenated oils) if you must eat popcorn, you know the microwaveable kind. Stuff isn't bad at all I've find out and really no fat or calories at all. Always have some of that handy for a quick snack.

Hi Ian,

Congratulations on the weight loss!

Like Mike said, if you have some partiality to popcorn the best types are AIR popped corn (which tastes Ok with a little salt) and the microwave variety. Both have about 30 calories per cup, whereas the commercial variety is usually 5 times that ... And who stops at a cup [Big Grin]

Week 30, Weight: 228.4 lbs.

Total Weight Loss: 70.4 lbs.

Weight Loss since last week: 7.6 lbs.

I pulled off most of the 8 lbs that I gained at Show East. Let's call some of that, food retention. Some of my challenges this week were that I had a friend in town for a visit and both of our favorite activities are eating. I cooked him 4 meals, thus proving that I will make someone a very good wife one day. [Big Grin] I cook, but I don't clean. So I managed to lose weight while drinking wine with my friend and cooking him a couple of dinners and a couple of breakfasts. I also thought I had over eaten at three restaurants at which I ate last week.

Goals: Lose 8 lbs., maintain weight for 6-weeks, become a lifetime member of Weight Watchers.

Tip 'O The Week: A couple of bottles of wine won't kill ya! [Smile]

I have gained 30lbs in the past 6 weeks, not fat weight though.

So, that leaves you with muscle weight. Hmmm.... Interesting.

I've gained 25lbs since I started school and some new medication that is known to make you gain weight. [Roll Eyes]

Starting this Wednesday I'm going to try weight watchers because as I found out, I don't have the willpower to do it on my own. Maybe it will be better for me to be embarrassed publicly in front of complete strangers every time I gain. [Smile]

Been on the treadmill almost everyday to...doesn't do a damn thing!!! [fu]

Supposedly, Chris told me it wasn't fat weight but "non" fat weight.

Maybe Chris took part in a water drinking contest. Water is pretty damned heavy.

On average, provided you're not taking steroids or any other type of growth hormone, most men cannot gain anymore than about 10 pounds of lean muscle weight per year.

To do any better than that, you have to have a carefully designed weightlifting program and an even more carefully designed diet. Just look at what professional body builders have to do on their work out schedules and eating schedules. It's a hell of a lot of work, really a full time job. On top of that, genetics play a big role in the process. Most people could work the hell out of themselves in the gym and not do too awful much more than just get nicely cut. On the bright side, most women are turned on much more by guys with a Bruce Lee type physique than someone who looks like Arnold Swarzenegger.

Posted by Jennifer Pan (Member # 2035) on 11-07-2004, 02:34 PM:

Indeed, the Bruce Lee type is very HOT! [Big Grin]

Rachel, best of luck with Weight Watchers.

Dang, now I need to go workout too.

Thanks Jen!

Yeah, I'd pick Bruce Lee over good ol' Arnold anyday. In both Arnolds present and past state, have you seen his belly lately? [Smile]

Posted by Chris Hipp (Member # 1788) on 11-07-2004, 10:49 PM:

who knows, All I know is that I get on a scale and where I weighed 160lbs before I now weigh 190. This is weighing without shoes and with very thin/light pajama pants on. Brad is right about defecating though, you can easily drop a couple of pounds. I would say what I am doing to gain the weight but since you have already assumed that I am lying I will jsut let you keep assuming. However, I will say that I am most definitely not on any drugs.

Posted by Jennifer Pan (Member # 2035) on 11-08-2004, 01:19 AM:

I believe you Chris. It just left me questioning the possibilities, because I found it odd. It's good that drugs don't have any part in it.

I remember when I started working last summer. I had lost 15 lbs in two weeks. I didn't notice the weight loss until people said it to me. So I weighed myself... repeatedly... hoping the scale was wrong.

Weight loss since my last post one fricken ounce!

Rachel, congratulations. Weight Watchers is a good program.

Last week I was unable to maintain my diet and ate over my points allowance every day. It was good that I didn't gain weight. This week I think I have been better but we'll see on Saturday which is my weigh-in day. I've played it a little loose this week as well, but I think I haven't abused it as much as last week so here's hoping.

A few weeks back I was on Cape Cod visiting my father, I bought cranberries from the cranberry bog out behind my father's house. Last night I made the cranberry pie out of the cookbook. I used a store bought pie shell. My mother used to make cranberry bread so I thought the pie sounded exotic and extremely cranberry. I have never heard of nor seen a cranberry pie. It was very tangy.

Pie isn't exactly the best thing to have around the house. I took my pie to work in the hopes that my employees would make a sufficient dent in it that I could have the rest around the house and not overindulge. They loved it. I was able to take half the pie home and portion it out over then next few nights. I have one slice left for tonight.

I have enough cranberries left over to make cranberry bread which I am sure is also not on my diet.

Then we have so many morning events that I haven't been able to get my running in. I ran last Monday, but I haven't been able to go running since. I hope to run tomorrow on Friday, but that will mean only twice this week. Between the holidays coming up, my baking desert and the days growing shorter and colder, it will make it challenging to maintain my diet. Tune in after Saturday to see how I did this week.

Food today: 28 points allowed

Yogurt & Cereal 4-points
English Muffin w/ marmolade 3-points
4 oz Grapefruit Juice 1-point
Coffee w/ Half & Half 1-point
Coffee w/ packet of hot chocolate 2-points
1/2 PB&J 4-points
8 oz Soup 2-points

Points left 11
Points for Pie 7
Points left for dinner 4

Wait a minute, that doesn't work.

Thanks Ian and Mike! [Smile]

Ian, if you like sweets that much may I suggest trying Healthy Choice Ice Cream Fudge Bars (something like that), they are only worth 2 points each and they are pretty big. The weight watchers carrot cakes are pretty good too but they're real small, worth 1 point.

Weight this week: 225.1 lbs.
Weight Loss this week: 3.0 lbs.
Total Weight Loss: 73.1 lbs.

All while eating cranberry pie! [thumbsup]

I'm glad I got that monkey off my chest.

This week the group leader talked about strategies for not overindulging at Thanksgiving. She also asked what we are doing for Thanksgiving. I'm going the avoidance route. I'm working at the theatre Thanksgiving Day and then retiring home alone and cooking up some low-cal feast. I'm going to prepare something like Turkey cutlets, brown & wild rice, mashed yams, green beans and a salad. Oh yea, and maybe another cranberry pie. [Big Grin]

What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

Congrats Ian!!!

Luckily I'm making the dinner this year so I can decide what we're both eating. Planning on turkey breast, mixed sauteed veggies, and I'm letting Don pick either stuffing or mashed potatoes. If I make it, I'll eat it so there is no way I'm making both! [Big Grin]

December 11th, 2004

GOAAAAL!!! [Big Grin]

Weight loss this week 7.2 lbs.
Total Weight loss 81 lbs.
Weight 217 lbs. [beer]

35-weeks.

I had set my goal at 220 lbs. Now I have to hold this weight +2 lbs or -2 lbs for the next 6-weeks and I will become a lifetime member of Weight Watchers like Fergie. Once I am a lifetime member, I don't have to pay for weigh ins and meetings. But I do have to weigh in at least once per month to stay active. The physical act of weighing in keeps you accountable.

I still don't have 6-pack abs and I jiggle a bit more than I'd like. So you won't be catching me strutting about the street with my shirt off. After I reach lifetime membership I may branch out and try taking another 10-20 lbs off, or weight lifting. Who knows, I might be entering that ShoWest wet t-shirt contest. [Eek!]

Tip 'O The Week: Some diet foods are tolerable.

Diet foods I have liked:

Boca Burgers 3-points
Boca Chickn' 3-points
Gardenburgers 1-point [thumbsup]
Egg Beaters 1-point (I eat a lot of omelet’s in the morning)
Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches 2-points
Kraft 2% singles cheese 1-point
Amy's Kitchen Tamale Pie 2-points
Whole Wheat pasta
Soup

Diet food that blows... [puke]

Low Fat Mayonnaise
Low Calorie Bread 1-point (instead of 2-points for regular bread)
Kraft No-Fat Cheese Singles
Lean Cuisine Turkey and Mashed something
Turkey Bacon (Life is too short)
Weight Watchers Shakes
Weight Watchers energy bars
Weight Watchers fudge bars
Weight Watchers diet candy
Whole Wheat English Muffins (I tried but nothing beats an original Thomas English Muffin.)

The adventure isn’t over. I must continue to eat in this style for the rest of my life or I will get fat again.
However on maintenance I can eat about 30% more food. [Big Grin]

This After/After. I bought new jeans last night, size 36. I need new shirts. I don't think the pocket is supposed to be that low. [Eek!] I think I have gone from an XXXL to an XL. Perhaps Christmas will be a good opportunity to go shopping.

The main reason you look different, Ian, is the lack of a goatee. You are a little slimmer in those pics than when I first met you in 1993 or 1994 or whenever it was. But of course you were always wearing black every single day and black is slimming. Try on your old black UA Projection & Sound shirt, grow the goatee, and suddenly we'll both have an urge to install the one of first SDDS units ever into #9.

Haven't checked in on this thread in a while.. until tonight..

You do like like a new man.. no [bs]

Keep up the hard work and dedication until you get to where YOU want to be, not where everyone thinks or tells you you need to be. If a person isn't comfortable with themselves, they'll never be comfortable with anyone else... [Frown]

Me, I'm good and comfortable.. even gained a few pounds to prove it.. :>)

215-pounds

I haven't been this light since collage.

Yesterday one of the inevitable boxes of See's candy showed up at work. Nine pieces later I thought I had messed up. But I am still 3-pounds lighter than last week. The Weight Watchers person even commented that I shouldn't be losing weight during the maintenance phase of the program. But I ran 3-miles, 5-days this week. I am going home to my Mother's house tomorrow and I'm sure that all caution will be thrown to the wind over Christmas. My Grandmother is doing her famous Buche de Noel for desert tomorrow night.

Well check back in a couple of weeks to see how I maintained over the holidays.

215 lbs.

Just today I became a "Lifetime Member" of Weight Watchers. This means as long as I weigh in every month I don't have to pay the weekly fee. If I miss a month, I think I have to start paying the fee again. Being a lifetime member doesn't mean that you are penalized for gaining weight, they just think if you have to come in once per month, you will spot weight trends and take corrective action.

I wasn't the only "Lifetime Member" awarded today. There was a young woman who has lost 120 lbs. When pressed as to how long it took, she reluctantly admitted that it had taken her 3-years and that in the first year she didn't lose any weight. Now that is determination. Imagine continuing to come even though by all appearances the program isn't working.

As you might imagine, I heartily recommend Weight Watcher's. They have a reputation for being for housewives and old ladies, but the program works and it has the best success rate for customers keeping their weight off.

As they said this morning, now my real challenge begins, keeping the weight off. This week I have been hungry or bored after dinner and have gone back the kitchen for buttered bread or a late night peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I put on 1.6 lbs. this week, so I have to rein it in just a bit. At least I know how much to eat to maintain my weight loss and just how little it takes to put on a little weight.

I've been nursing a fragile foot so I haven't been running. I need to get back in to the running so I do it 3-times per week. I also may look in to joining a gym although I detest the whole gym culture, so I may look in to alternatives.

Thanks for all of your support. It's been fun writing about this journey here. I'll have to dredge this thread up every year and report in.

I see Jim didn't make good on his threat. [Razz]

For the past two months I have been winging it somewhat. I haven't been attending Weight Watcher's meetings and have been trying to just use common sense with my diet. Well it hasn't been working.

Although I still run a couple of miles every other day, I have not been physically active. I need to get out and move more. I need to get off of my duff!

I weighed in this morning at 227 lbs. That is 7 lbs above my stated goal of 220 and 17 lbs over my all time low of 210 lbs. I need to keep it somewhere between 215 and 220. So this week and the next three weeks I am going to get Draconian and try to stick to my program. After that, I'll be in Telluride and Maine and it will be hard to stick with the program. But I'll try.

But my first challenge is Omelette Express this morning. Stay tuned.
