Ronald Regan passed away earlier today. He was the oldest president to start a term at 69 years of age. He died at the age of 93

He was a film actor before politics entered the picture, so we have potentially got something 'on topic' to discuss. Here is an article about his movie career specifically. I always did wonder where the phrase 'Win one for the gipper!' came from...

That article describes his movie career, and how it came to a dead end, but not how he then went into politics and eventually became President. That would be interesting to know.

I'll be the first to admit that he acted the role of president very well, kinda folksy and tough at the same time. What he actually did of substance...hmm...that would get us into the verboten area of politics. Let's just say it was a very tough time for many average Americans. Just like now. Bedtime for Bonzo was shown (16mm) at U of IL around the time of the election. My friends and I went to cheer on the Gipper and the chimp with party noisemakers.

May he rest in peace.

If you watch the movie "Knute Rockne, All American", you won't see Reagan's famous "Win one for the Gipper" scene. That scene was the subject of a copyright infringement suit brought by the authors of an earlier radio drama, who claimed they created that dialogue. They won their case, and that specific scene was ordered deleted from all subsequent prints.

I haven't seen anybody mention Reagan's first elected position... president of the Screen Actors Guild.

I remember when I ran that picture at a repertory house in the early 80s, that scene was indeed missing and we never knew why. Thanks for that info, Bill.

Democrat/Republican/Liberal/Conservative, what does it matter? He was President of the United States, and we have had only 43 of them in our history.

Time to set poltics aside and honor the man and his office. Interestingly, that's what Reagan and Tip O'Neill used to do. They set politics aside after 6PM and enjoyed each other's company.

His family has handled this with grace. Nancy Reagan, no matter what one thinks of her, has been very classy in this whole ordeal.

I must say that the Kitty Kelley book Nancy Reagan was quite an enjoyable read, especially the part where she called up the late Frank Casey, Warner Bros.' legendary Chicago publicist (someone I actually knew) to complain that Warners hadn't renewed Reagan's contract. Nowadays I give her credit for going against the conservative tide regarding stell cell research.

Geez, Dan was right that this would turn political and here it is already turning nasty. How pathetic.

Sorry for having to edit everyone's posts, but there was no other fair way to do it other than to wipe EVERYTHING even REMOTELY political from the comments. Otherwise we then have to deal with people whining "you let Jim Bob's post remain and he said blah, blah, blah...and then Joe Bob praised him for doing this and blah, blah, blah...and then Bob Bob said, blah, blah, blah" So nope, it's all wiped clean!

I would like to say out of respect for the dead that this thread will remain open, but we all know there are people here who just cannot control themselves when it comes to pushing their political opinions on others. There used to exist a political forum and it was a ridiculous pain in the rear to maintain. As such, the "no politics" has been a clear rule since the demise of that forum.

The next time someone passes that has a political background, please respect the fact that they are dead and if you cannot say something nice and non-political, don't post anything at all. If anyone has a problem with the way this was handled in any capacity and feels the need to draft an email, send it to Will. The Mods have better things to do with their time.
