Finally, a good thread!

What would be the best and the worst possible method to die, do you think? Here are some I can think of:

Worst
-Drowning in sand.
-Stuffed inside of a suitcase being tossed around by a gorilla.
-Eaten alive by zombies.[av=m]

Best
-Big explosion.
-Spontaneous combustion.
-Smashed by falling semi.

I'll post more later as I think of them.

Best:
Desentigrate while approaching light speed.

Worst:
Bored to death.

Every year around this time we have someone get stuck in a grain silo. That would be a awful way to die. Seeing everyone there trying to help you out and getting sucked in. It happened yesterday and they had to build a wooded box to place around the guys to dig them out it took hours to do.

I can't think of a "best", but being beheaded on television by that piece of crap over in Iraq seems to qualify as "worst".

Worst - an electric chair with worn-out rectifier diodes? [evil]

Also, jumping in front of high speed trains, which seems to be becoming a more and more popular form of suicide nowadays. There's a station about 20 miles north of me in the Vale of York which has now become so notorious for 'jumpers' (there are only one or two stopping trains a day, but expresses thunder through the platform at 100mph plus, hence it's an ideal venue) that they've installed CCTV cameras on the platform linked to the local police station. It can't be that bad for the people who do it (being hit by a 200 ton object at 100mph must be quick, if not clean), but for the engine driver, and especially the policemen who have to clear up the mess, it must be about as bad as you can get.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning while sleeping best way to die barring dying in your sleep naturally.

Worst way to die? - watching some movie written by Akiva GOldsman , made by the spawn of Joel Shumaker and Nora Ephron(OK, yeah I know) on video and then flailing your hands in frustration knocking off the candle sitting on the table next to you, setting yourself on fire, then choking on the popcorn you are eating and still unable to switch the wretched movie off in your final moments.

The dying after sex thing reminds of that line from "Basic Instinct": "He got off after he got off."

IMHO, there's not very many "good" ways to die:
* Peacefully dying in your sleep from old age.
* Anything where death is very instantaneous.

There's lots of bad ways to die, here's some scenarios that give me the creeps.
* Drowning in a submarine miles below the surface.
* Car tunnel collapses, and you're not killed instantly.
* Getting eaten by crocodiles.
* Being buried alive.
* Being burned at the stake.
* Getting crushed like the Terminator in "T1".
* Falling into an open pipe in the ground 100 feet deep, you get stuck and can't move and there's rising water.

I agree with Jeremy... during [sex] would be the worst.

The best for me would probably be going bungy jumping, the cord breaks and I hit flat on my face from a thousand foot cliff.

Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 06-30-2004, 03:57 PM:

The worse to me:
* Having your head sawed off as Jeff mentioned.
* Burning to death in a fire while still conscience. (I already know where I'm going for my final reward. I don't need a preview) [Wink]
* Being slowly squished to death during an earthquake or tornado.

My "Preferred way":
* In my sleep in old age. (Yeah, I know...I'm a wuss!)
* Blown up by a bomb.
* Shot in the head.

(Since I live in LA, any of those are possible.) [Wink]

Jen: I've done much bungee jumping and sling-shot bungee... LOVE IT! [beer]

(BTW Joe, this is a stupit topic! I ONLY commented cuz I need to up my post count!)

I don't want to die of decapitation, drowning, or being crushed.

Dying in your sleep is best but not too likely.

In fact, I'll never die. I'm an immortal!!!

Worst Ways to Die:
Being crushed or suffacating slowly
Having someone torture you
While looking at porn on your friends computer

Best Ways to Die:
In your sleep
While getting it on
Spontaneous Combustion

Worst:

A Xenon bulb explodes in your face and the glass cuts your throat and you die.

When breaking down a print, the platter becomes loose and slices you in half when it flies off.

Drowing in anything: sand, water, oil, etc.

Best:

Peacefully, in your sleep.

In the arms of the one you love.

Getting knocked in the head, falling unconcious, and then never waking up.

Worst ways: Like others have already said here, burning, drowning, sufficating, or being slowly crushed, maimed, or mangled to death, like the students of Tiananmen Square 15 years ago.

Best way: A slightly different take on dying in your sleep--

When I die, I'd like to go quietly in my sleep
Like my grandfather
Not screaming
Like his passengers.

Or better yet, going out in a blaze of glory, a warrior's death, taking as many of your enemy with you as you can.

This one isn't a likely scenario for one of the "worst ways" to expire (but it is still pretty disturbing): You're chained to the bottom of a rotten trash dumpster and then it gets filled with thousands of gallons of used tobacco spit juice.

I only thought of that one as a deserved punishment for some psychopath pranksters in the news today. Just for fun they taped explosive fireworks in the mouths of some puppies and blew off their heads. Police have no suspects. The mother of the puppies was apparently unhurt, but was traumatized from watching her dogs die. There is no type of death cruel enough for the kind of scum that gets their kicks from torturing animals. I'd gladly blast off their testicles with my Ithaca shotgun so they would be unable to pollute the human genepool any further with their spawn.

I have seen some really bad ways to die over there at rotten.com

Anyways..

My number one best way to die:

Breaking the land speed record in a futuristic sports car. Just as I break the record - the million dollar car explodes into giant fireball.

My number one worst way:

Being pushed out of an airplane without a parachute.

Nah Bobby, the punishment should fit the crime...sort of. Those guys need to have small fireworks taped in their mouths repeatedly until their heads explode. We wouldn't want to do it in one quick shot.

Worst

>nibbled to death by a duck.
>Being torn apart by some large animal, ie Tiger.
>Tower collapse with you at the top (quick death is not guaranteed)
>Anything involving fire, water, hot oil.....

Best

>>Head on collision with stationary object at triple digit speeds.
>>Lightning
>>High Voltage (this from a guy who works around 10,000 Volts all day long.

As a kid I stayed up late and watched a silent (I think) short about a filmmaker wrapping up his work. He put the film can aside and the can opened revealing film that was unwinding itself. It moved along the floor and a dog was looking at it curiously. The film then wrapped itself around the dog and the filmmaker was scared because when the film unraveled the dog was gone. The man ran out of the house and the film followed and cornered him. The man fought frantically, but was enveloped by the film. The outline of the man was obvious and the film unraveled leaving nothing in the man's place. Then the film crawled back into its film can and that was the end. I had nightmares about it and to think to this day I actually love playing around with film.

I also will never die, having been in several near death experiences that would have killed lesser men, such as today when my wife nearly screwed me to death, giving me a near stroke as she did and sending me screaming in pain. ANyone else would have had thier head exploded like in scanners, by the way a very bad way to die.

The best way to die as at my feet begging for your pitiful life while I whisper plattitudes of windsong whooshing quetly..... um.... yeah just die already.

I saw that same short when I was a kid. I always wanted to find a copy of that, but I forgot what it was called or who made it.

Anyway, my take:

"The worst way would be for a bunch of old men to gather around me and start biting and eating me alive... First, they would tear off my clothes..."

Sorry, that was a line from Return of the Living Dead. Couldn't resist quoting "Trash" from it.

For the best way (if I had to): Getting stranded as the first human on Mars. You've got a few hours air supply and solitude on a planet to yourself.

Best way for me: immediately, and I don´t mean right now, I mean not prolonged.

Worst way for me has got to be one I read about on darwin awards. The guy really wanted to kill himself, so he´s on a high cliff on top of the ocean with a noose aroud his neck, a gun to his head and has swallowed a can of sleeping pills.

When he´s about to pull the trigger, he slips, shoots of the rope to hang him and crashes in to the sea, swallows sea water and has all of his pills come back up and gets rescued.

He died later in the hospital from hypothermia. He succeded but must have been disappointed a number of times in the process...

Unfortunately, not always just in the movies: [Frown]

quote:
Farmer is killed when he falls beneath moving combine.
Summary
A 32-year-old farmer was killed when the combine he was operating ran over him. He had completed making initial adjustments to this machine and was just beginning to use it to harvest grass seed. Another worker operating a second combine in the same field witnessed the incident from a distance. The victim is reported to have exited the still moving combine and was observed walking slowly towards the rear of the machine as the combine continued to travel past him. The other operator and the victim’s father believe that he may have stepped off the machine to observe its operation or check on something. The victim fell under the left rear wheel and was crushed. The reason the victim fell remains undetermined but it is believed that he stumbled or tripped on the uneven ground.

quote:
Farmer Dies After Getting Caught In Auger Of A Combine Header -- Iowa.

Summary

An 84-year-old farmer was killed while cleaning dirt out of an old combine header. The victim was working alone combining beans in a remote field. He had purchased a used early 1970’s self-propelled combine the previous year. This was the first time he was using it in the field. He had difficulty operating the combine; it did not separate the beans properly and the cutting height was too high at times and too low in other places. The combine header on the left side had become clogged with field dirt while traveling too close to the ground. The farmer had apparently disengaged the header using a control lever in the cab, then climbed down and proceeded to clean the sickle and auger of dirt. He left the engine running because it had a bad battery. Apparently the header slipped into gear on its own while he was cleaning the dirt. The reel and auger had thrown him around to the right side and pulled his left leg into the auger. The chain driving the reel and auger broke while he was caught between the reel and auger leaving the sickle still running. He was found unconscious lying on the sickle with significant leg injury and loss of blood. An emergency crew used the jaws of life to cut through the reel to access the victim, but he died enroute to the hospital.

Various opinions:

http://www.richard.clark32.btinternet.co.uk/guillotine.html

quote:
The cause of death.
The person guillotined becomes unconscious very quickly and dies from shock and anoxia due to haemorrhage and loss of blood pressure within less than 60 seconds. It has often been reported that the eyes and mouths of people beheaded have shown signs of movement. It has been calculated that the human brain has enough oxygen stored for metabolism to persist about seven seconds after the supply is cut off. As in hanging the heart continues to beat for some time after decapitation.
Various experiments have been made on guillotined heads and generally seem to show that little consciousness remains after 2 - 5 seconds of separation from the body although some have concluded that the head retains feeling for much longer. Whatever the truth, guillotining is probably one of the least cruel methods of execution and yet one that has a high deterrent value because it is perceived as gruesome.

http://www.aarrgghh.com/no_way/beheading.htm

quote:
A particularly detailed report comes from Dr. Beaurieux who, under perfect circumstances, experimented with the head of the murderer Languille, guillotined at 5.30 am on 28 June, 1905. (From A History of the Guillotine by Alister Kershaw. His source is Archives d'Anthropologie Criminelle, 1905):

Here, then, is what I was able to note immediately after the decapitation: the eyelids and lips of the guillotined man worked in irregularly rhythmic contractions for about five or six seconds ... I waited for several seconds. The spasmodic movements ceased.

The face relaxed, the lids half closed on the eyeballs, leaving only the white of the conjunctiva visible, exactly as in the dying whom we have occasion to see every day in the exercise of our profession, or as in those just dead.

It was then that I called in a strong, sharp voice: 'Languille!' I saw the eyelids slowly lift up, without any spasmodic contractions ... Next Languille's eyes very definitely fixed themselves on mine and the pupils focused themselves ... After several seconds, the eyelids closed again, slowly and evenly, and the head took on the same appearance as it had had before I called out.

It was at that point that I called out again and, once more, without any spasm, slowly, the eyelids lifted and undeniably living eyes fixed themselves on mine with perhaps even more penetration than the first time. Then there was a further closing of the eyelids, but now less complete. I attempted the effect of a third call; there was no further movement and the eyes took on the glazed look which they have in the dead.

I have just recounted to you with rigorous exactness what I was able to observe. The whole thing had lasted twenty-five to thirty seconds.

Other ways you DON'T want to go:

Never really thought that there was a 'best' way to die.

However two of the odder deaths I have been told about were:

1. A huge kangaroo flying through the windscreen of a car travelling on the highway. By the time the police arrived the guy had been opened from his throat all the way down to his pelvis by the kangaroo thrashing about. They had to shoot the roo, who was still in the back seat.

2. A horse came into an outback town saddled up with no rider. When the police were informed that there was a body in a tree on someone's property they went out to investigate.

The guy was entrenched in the tree with his head trapped in such a way that his neck was stretched beyond imagination. The sergeant said to his new recruit: "There are two options and I'll let you choose which one you want"

a. to cut off the guy's head.
b. to catch the body.

The recruit chose option A.

I questioned the guy as to why they couldn't just chop down the tree, however there is apparently some law that prevents police from destruction of private property. [Confused]

Worst: Dropping a Xenon in some isolated closet in the projection room with no one else around. The flying glass hits an artery and you bleed to death on your way downstairs with only two things on your mind. Best: I've just made the last changeover, the final reel's running perfectly (it's a brand-new print of the first movie I remember seeing, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA), I douse the next-to-last arc on the Peerless, sit down ... and they find me when the tail leader for the last reel hits the screen leaving blank whiteness, the curtains fail to close and the house lights fail to go up.

Worst: I'm stuck in a screening of THE PREACHER'S WIFE and my spouse is so entranced by the moronic crap on the screen that she fails to notice me gasping my last breaths begging for medical attention.

Leo's post about suicide by jumping in front of a train reminds me of the opening scene of the 2001 Japanese film Suicide Club (Jisatsu Circle). From Midnight Eye's review:
quote:
[...] watching Suicide Club is a special experience indeed. What to think of an opening sequence in which 54 uniformed schoolgirls commit simultaneous suicide by jumping hand-in-hand in front of a rush hour train at Shinjuku station, covering shocked commuters in geysers of blood that washes in red rivers over the concrete platform? Welcome to tonight's main attraction, don't bother buying popcorn.
"Jumpers" are fairly common in Japan, enough so that some railroad companies in the Tokyo area now charge the deceased's family for the clean up and down time. I have this film on R3 DVD. The rest of the movie is indeed forgettable, but oh those first five minutes. I've used it as a video test just to see the reactions it gets. [Big Grin]

Today, for the first time in my life, I saw, in person, a real fire in a house (flames bursting out all the windows, no chance of saving the house).

I don't know if anyone was trapped inside, but I think being stuck in there would have to be one of the worst ways to go.

Best way to go: die while in a coma so you don't know what's going on.

Buy your own casket (I'll sell you one...wholesale); place it in your garage, and wait for the BIG day. It'll come sooner or later!
