I stumbled on this while looking for other random things this morning. Couldn't find any reference to it on film-tech so I thought I'd post it here. Not bad, but not the funniest thing I've ever seen either. Parts of it certainily ring true for those of us in the movie business...

I don't know why I never thought to post this before... I worked with him at two different jobs. Extremely funny guy in person. He literally could make any story hilarious just by the way he tells it. His caricatures are top notch, too.... especially when you know the identities behind them. Good ol' "Martin."

I had a feeling that a lot of it would have been based on real people, which would make it all the better if you actually knew who was being depicted.

It's funny how I guess almost every cinema must have the same sort of culture - so much of the comic is very much like situations and people that I know and work with here.

Actually, I find Brainwrap Comics totally annoying.

And it's not drawn very well, either.

Nor can I relate to any of it. It's all crap!

I suppose the humor in the comic strip could be better, but then again it's not all that bad coming from an amateur devoting the strip to the experience of working in a movie theater.

It's not all that badly drawn either. In fact, it is pretty decent. At least the line work is clean, the color use is good and the figures don't look "dead." Sure, it doesn't rival the work of John Byrne, but the guy isn't being paid by Marvel. That's just my professional opinion.

Not only did I eventually learn booth, but I finally got to shovel some popcorn!

I learned projection, which was bittersweet. I really really enjoyed it and took immense pride in providing the best picture and sound quality possible. Only problem was, management had other ideas...

...and at this rate, these experiences will be depicted in the comic in about 17 years.

(Coincidentally, projectionists will be introduced in "Brainwrap Comics" in the upcoming update, July 15.)

And yes, I miss it. (Projection, that is. Not shoveling popcorn.)

Regardless of any qualifications on my part, I still found them quite entertaining.

Joe, somewhere in the archives you posted some similar drawings you used to do. You should bump those up at some point.

Generally, the response has been pretty positive. Most of my burgeoning fanbase are regular readers of the hundreds of other "webcomics" out there... it's nice to know -- and somewhat more rewarding -- that the comic is striking a chord with movie theatre slaves.

I'll concede, the situations are funnier if you know who the characters are based on. That wasn't intentional; there just happens to be a lot of in-jokes due to its autobiographical nature. Luckily, though, most people don't notice -- or at the very least, don't care.

Anyway, I encourage any and all compliments or criticism. Both play an equal part in motivating me to continue. Having had no formal art schooling, I never learned about focus and discipline, so keep those opinions coming and I'll keep the comics coming.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna get back to working on this stinking thing.

...though, not in the best light. Don't worry; that'll change one day.

That's not too bad a light... it's quite smart to get someone else to do all the heavy lifting if you can con someone into it.

From what I've heard though, that's almost exactly how a lot of non-projectionists imagine the projection room to be like. Dark and mysterious, and full of strange things and strange people. Not too far from the truth usually!

I showed this comic to a bunch of the guys that work at my cinema the other day, right after they'd spent 5 hours putting standees together. So needless to say you've got a few more fans now too!

This comic is awesome. Do you draw everything by hand and then scan it in, or is most of it done on the computer? Of course, the posters and standees are "digital"

***EDIT*** OH MY GOD!!! I'm still laughing at the first strip... THAT MANAGER!! That thing is EXACTLY what I had to put up with at the Regal when it changed GMs. Why are all "lifetime theater chain middle management" fat?

That's most definitely the parking lot of my first theatre, the beloved Edwards Westend 8 in Corona, CA (that is now a Choc Thrift Store ... what, a dollar-theatre--sorry, DISCOUNT theatre--didn't make enough money to stay in business!?)

(By the way, nice TMBG banner at the top. It's a great album. Short. But great.)

Wow, does that ever bring back the "old days" of working at AMC Seven Hills 10 (Notice how I didn't put "good" before "old days") The uniform, the videos, the standees, the "box full o' trailers", the 'witch'. However, I envy you Kyle (or your character), you were treated better.

Great comic, looking forward to page 13.

I draw it, scan it, color it in Photoshop. More details appear on the somewhat verbose about page.

It looks like you waste a lot of time in front of the Playstation 2. You could save a TON of time if you got a system that didn't spend 90% of it's time loading...very....slowly. Or at least put a 120 Gig hard drive in your PS2 so games can load off of that. It will save you several hours per day.

Do you have a letter stencil set? Might want to get one. The "35mm" looks kind of like "85mm" in that last panel. [av=m]

If you're referring to doing the lettering by hand, I don't, but I could, because my handwriting is pretty good -- at least, entirely legible. I now notice this "85mm" thing you're referring to... that's a font issue. I'm not going to go back and retroactively change the font in every page, but it is Photoshop, so there are ways to make that "3" clearer... thanks for pointing that out!

I appreciate everyone's comments. I'm always eager to improve. Now I wish I'd gone to art school. These forums will just have to do, instead.
