Just thought I'd let you all know. I finally have an interview tomorrow for Hollywood Video. For those who have never heard of it, it is like Blockbuster. So if I get this, I'm still in the movie business...sort of. Wish me luck!!!
Also, since this is a job, not a career meaning, 6-7.50/hr, should I shave my goatee?
Any tips on the interview process? I haven't had to do this in a while.
Posted by Darryl Spicer (Member # 711) on 07-19-2004, 08:22 PM:
We have some of those stores here. My Advise is to present yourself in a professional manner. Don't go to the interview in your everyday clothes. Don't be negative with comments about your other job. They may take that as being you and they don't want that in their business.
Posted by Chris Hipp (Member # 1788) on 07-19-2004, 08:32 PM:
Keep your goatee, jsut make sure it looks clean. If they dont allow facial hair then they will let you know
Posted by Ethan Harper (Member # 472) on 07-19-2004, 10:12 PM:
Just go nude, and talk about your everyday fantasies about underage actresses about to turn legal. But hey, I heard Lindsey Lohan just got married and divorced within the matter of minutes the other day.
Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 07-19-2004, 10:20 PM:
Shave off half of your goatee.... the left half. Then shave off the right half of your hair. Tell the asshole that interviews you that you are down and with it, and that's why you look the way you do. Also, get a tattoo. Tattoos are great, they guarantee respect will be given to you, and will look great for the rest of your life. Everyone loves tattoos. Also offer some urine for a drug test. Just whip it out and pee in anything that can collect liquid on his/her desk. Then offer him/her a joint. Like tattoos, usage of marijuana absolutely commands respect. It forces people to take you and your thoughts/opinions seriously. Also be sure to fart a lot. It projects confidence.
If hired, you will help turn Hollywood Video into a major force to be reckoned with, and the world will improve as a result. Good luck! [av=m]

The general rule of job interviews is to dress one 'level' higher than the work uniform you would be wearing when possible. If Hollywood Video employees wear polo shirts like blockbuster then a shirt and tie (no sport coat needed) would probably be appropriate.
Posted by Phil Hill (Member # 371) on 07-20-2004, 04:35 AM:
I sorta agree with Joe... but LOSE **ALL** the facial hair for the interview.
Most companies like the "clean-cut", nice-boy look for an employee dealing with the public unless of course you're in Detroit or Dallas like Chris.
After you get hired, then grow the face-hair and get all the tattoos you want. Preferably, temporary ones on your neck and face.
If they don't like it, have sex with the boss' daughter/son/whatever, or even the boss, and then sue them for sexual harassment.
Then, with all the $$$ from the lawsuit, open your own theatre and live the "GOOD" life!
Welcome to the real world.

While I'm at it, why don't I knock over a few racks in the store and punch one of the associates. You know that violence always helps with anything you do.

I wouldn't even consider a meanial job such as that. You can do alot better....common...!

I heard Phil Hill is the Hollywood link for Hollywood Video...
but I think that Mark has given you the best advice. Set your sights higher there is a company out there looking for you. You may have to re-locate and that can be a good thing. Best of luck.

Good luck with the interview, Richard.

Joe and I agree on something!! He's right. If you hold your farts in, they will back up into your brain and you will have crappy ideas.
Richard, I'd offer you a job at my theater, but I called your previous employer and there was this incident about shitting in a theater that doesn't sit well with me. Our theaters are shitty enough.

Thanks Thomas.....I think..
Well, I got offered a 2nd interview tomorrow. That is a good sign. See what I need is something that can pay the bills right now. I can look for something else later. It kinda sucks though that the pay is only 6.00/hr. Oh well, it's money.
Posted by Jeremy Fuentes (Member # 2135) on 07-20-2004, 01:34 PM:
Is $6.00 more than you were making before? Because I can assure you, you will be working late hours for them too. And whats the second interview for? Why cant they just make a decision from the first one?
Posted by Adam Wilbert (Member # 1184) on 07-20-2004, 01:50 PM:
usually the second interview is by another manager. It also tests your willingness to jump through hoops.
Posted by Jeremy Fuentes (Member # 2135) on 07-20-2004, 01:52 PM:
I would just have both managers at the first interview.

A lot of companies use the two-interview process. I used to work for a Wendy's franchise. They had a standard form that was used during interviews. One manager would ask some of the questions on the form, and jot down the applicant's responses. If this first manager felt that the applicant was still worthy of hiring, he or she would schedule a second interview. During the second interview, the second manager would ask the other questions on the form. This process was used for hiring both crew members and managers, although there was a different interview form for management.
I'm not certain about the exact reasons behind this method, but I suppose one reason is that so two differnt managers can get a feel for the applicant and see if they both feel he/she is worth hiring.

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 07-20-2004, 02:25 PM:
Richard, why don't you go apply at Disney World? If you want to work for small $$ at least you get "perks" like free park admission.
Posted by Richard Greco (Member # 2032) on 07-20-2004, 04:03 PM:
Mike, Orlando is roughly 75 miles from where I live. It's a little too far IMHO. OTOH, Busch Gardens is a lot closer. However, summer is nearly over and the park will be closing soon.
Posted by Thomas Procyk (Member # 1170) on 07-21-2004, 12:41 AM:
Really? I thought Busch Gardens was open year-round. In fact, I KNOW they are because they kicked Universal's ass last year with "Howl O'Scream" in October.
Hell, even Universal pays $7.50 an hour for Halloween Horror Nights... and that's a 45 minute rotating shift. Free park admission. 3 Free guest passes. Discounts at everything Universal (NBC?) owns... and all this is valid for a full year after your seasonal employment ends. You also get first dibbs on any productions they might have going on at the time, especially at Nickelodeon Studios.

Richard, I know that chicks dig movie store clerks (are they clerks? Attendents? We'll go with clerks) but a lot more female customers in bikini tops seem to frequent Busch Gardens than Hollywood Video, too. Trust me, I've been to both.
Speaking of which, why not just apply as a lifeguard? Scantly clad girls of ALL ages go there in flocks.

Wouldn't video store people be called something like Audiovisual Home Entertainment Consulting Representative?
What's wrong with working in a video store anyway? As long as you don't get stuck there. It has many possibilities. You can later go on and direct hit movies in Hollywood (like QT).
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 07-21-2004, 12:18 PM:
I am pretty sure all store clerks were now called "Associates." (I think we can thank WalMart for that nonsense.)
Posted by Adam Wilbert (Member # 1184) on 07-21-2004, 12:25 PM:
or "team members," whatever that means. When I was a theatre manager, we called everyone else "floor staff," but corporate decided that that was demeaning.

"customer service specialists"
PC'eze has really gotten out of hand!
Posted by Paul Mayer (Member # 355) on 07-21-2004, 03:12 PM:
If you work at some of the hotel/casinos here you are a "cast member."
The Rio Hotel canned all of their cocktail waitresses last year and hired signer/dancer types as replacements. So now you get a little song and dance routine when you order a drink in that place. They are called "bevertainers."
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 07-21-2004, 04:05 PM:
"Cast Members"? They stole that from Disney. All Disney park workers have been Cast Members since the beginning of time (AFAIK).
We are an old fashioned theatre so we still call ours "concessionaires." Or if being informal, "crew members."
The female workers always refer to each other as "Roxy girls" which is kind of cool I think.
Posted by Adam Wilbert (Member # 1184) on 07-21-2004, 04:44 PM:
I think the term 'specialist' should be reserved for those few who actually have specialized talents. It's crazy to call everyone a specialist.
The only position re-naming that i've ever agreed with was Harkin's renaming Assistant Managers to simply "managers". That way there were fewer customers that could say, "well, I see that you're just an assistant, can I talk to a real manager?" Plus, it looks like I got a promotion when It came time to fill out resumes again!
-Adam
edit to respond to mike: I always thought of 'concessionaires' as a company hired to provide food services for a larger venue, like at a stadium or in a National Park. According to my dictionary: concession is:
4.a. The privilege of maintaining a subsidiary business within certain premises. b. The space allotted for such a business.
I've never looked that up before. Does the term still apply when the 'stand' is owned and opperated by the same company as the 'parent premises'? In any case, concession stand still sounds better than "snack bar".

Good News!!
I am now a Guest Service Representative at Hollywood Video in Brandon, FL.
I start my orientation with a 4 hour training session at a larger store on Saturday. I am getting a WONDERFUL
$6.00/hr and have to memorize some mission statement by Saturday. At least I'm not jobless anymore and I still get to work with movies. You are right Thomas, I forgat about Howl-O-Scream. I have been to Halloween Horror Nights, and it is awesomne!!

Why can't anyone call a spade a spade anymore? "Guest" Service Representative? "Guests" reply to invites to parties - "customers" rent movies.
But congratulations - a job's a job, even with a convoluted title...

Yeah, congrats Richard.
I really like our local "Hollywood Video". Nice, cheerful, efficient 'kids' working there, and it's always clean and tidy .. unlike most others around here.

Congratulations Richard. I know that the cost of living there is a lot lower than it is here in London, but that rate of pay still seems very low, but at least you have a job, and that's good. Hope there are prospects for promotion within the organisation. All the best.
What exactly does a 'Guest Service Representative' do? A few months ago I got given a new job title; actually a new job, they deleted my old post, and appointed me to a newly created one. I'm now a 'Network analyst'.
I don't know why, I don't analyse networks. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still an I.T. Technician, as I have been for the past fifteen years. At least people have some idea what that means!
