I noticed in another thread (in the Film Handler's Forum) that some of you were talking about the Alloy Orchestra. I've heard of them, and while one of the members is also part of one of my favorite bands (that would be Roger Miller of Mission of Burma), I've never actually heard them.

So... keeping in mind the "dancing about architecture" analogy, could somebody please try to describe their sound?

Specifically, that word "synthesizer" scares me, even though Miller plays it... does it have an obviously synthetic sound?

Also, just out of curiosity, does Miller wear protective headphones during performances?

Their scores are non-traditional, & opinions vary.

I personally prefer to hear scores when done on synthesizers to sound like synthesizers, as opposed to some scores which *attempt* to sound like an orchestra via sampled instruments. Not close, no cigar. If it's gonna be non-traditional, go with it, as opposed to a really embarassing imitation of something else.
