I have been checking out the post of why Richard is jealous of Manny and thought that maybe other members are jealous of someone else. To have too many topics of WHO I AM JEALOUS OF? I thought one thread should suffice. I do have the envy bug on someone and unfortunately I am sure he would feel more High and Mighty than he already is.
Member:
JOE REDIFER
Why:
1. He lives in Denver, Colorado. I still think of trying to get back there for the past 12 years. I went to school in Aurora and lived in a couple of places in Denver. Most of my teenage memories come from that area.
2. He worked (or is still working, I don't know) at one of my all time favorite theatres. The United Artist Continental when it was a one-screener. I still remember watching T2 in a packed house. I sat right up front on the far left in a sold out performance for the 70mm presentation.
3. The way his forum pic emphasizes his post. Not even Brad's does that.
4. His humor surpasses mine even on a sadistic level.
Posted by Chris Hipp (Member # 1788) on 08-08-2004, 11:50 PM:
You are not jealous of Joe, it is his mind control over you.
Seriously though, can there jsut be one thread about who you are jealous about, this is getting old fast.
Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 08-08-2004, 11:58 PM:
1. Damn straight!
2. Did the CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) actually work for that show?
[av=a]
3. I may go to a single pic soon, and then pop back on later with a different set of varying pics. Change is good, kna mean? Brad's pic changes like mine. It's just that he's always in "that mood".
4. My humor surpasses everybody's on EVERY level! Especially Steve Kraus'
So who am I jealous of? Let's see (off of the top of my head):
Josh Jones
So damned smart at such a young age, with lots of contacts in the industry already. Bastard.
Phil Hill
Retired and still having fun.
Daryl C. W. O'Shea
Indespensable in the computer world. I wish I had his skill. But I don't wish I lived in Canada!
Joe Redifer
Yes, I am so awesome that I am actually jealous of myself.
Brad Miller
Smart, enterprising, workaholic, and rivals my assholeness.

Mind control? No such thing.
Besides, if this is an uninteresting thread, it would eventually be pushed further back within the Film-Tech realm. What I was trying to see was how many people were envious of someone else. Not just where they live or how much money they have, but what they have done or have the capability to do. Sure it is very insecure to be too involved with not doing something to overcome this jealousy, but at least there are few things that make each person different and how they affect others. I could change the title to "WHY I LIKE ANOTHER FORUM MEMBER?" but that would bring up some very unnerving issues. I would think it would be a compliment to have someone jealous of you for stuff you can do or just who you are. Everyone is different and that's what makes each of us special. Even though I have the envy bug on someone, there are people out there that would be jealous of me. For what reason they would be jealous, I wouldn't know. I just try to be myself. This may have just been too much of a ramble, but wouldn't it boost your self esteem a bit if you were the subject?
Member:
Chris Hipp
Why:
1. His last name is "Hipp".
2. He lives near one of my bestest friends in the world.
3. He is considered the HIPPINATOR, while I am just an "EXPERT FILM HANDLER".
4. He can grow facial hair better than me.
Joe,
At the time I didn't know the difference between a tape dispenser and a splicer. All I know is that the presentation was very good and I had one heck of a crick in my neck for the next few days.
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 08-09-2004, 01:07 AM:
Joe, that list was far from comprehensive. Shame on you. You should list every member.
A few people I am jealous of (but by no means a comprehensive list):
Steve Guttag (Because he is Steve Guttag and he knows all. This simply cannot be disputed by anyone.)
Josh Jones (Again because he is way too smart and much too mature for his age.)
Daryl C. W. O'Shea (Again, way too smart for his age...and not just about computers either.)
Joe Redifer (Damn funny guy and very talented at many things.)
Phil Hill (Always the life of the party, always will be.)
Adam Martin (For his dedication to perfection with details...just look at Cinematour if you think I am kidding.)
Manny Knowles (This guy can read ANYBODY and has the most interesting takes on anything put forth to him!)
Scott Neff (The only person I've met who can ramble on and on for hours or days and yet he never gets boring to listen to. I so want to team Manny and Scott together on a radio talk show.)
Ethan Harper (Because Ethan IS the phiggidy wiggidy whack foshizzle of all.)
People I am not jealous of:
Any member without a picture (Those people just suck!
)

Which forum mebers am I jealous of? well none. While I could be jealous of certain people for being smarter, richer, more funny or for having more hair, I may not be jealous of other things such as anal warts or third nipples. You never know.
Who am I jealous of? My cat, she doesnt waste her life working. She sleeps, eats and fights with the other cats all day. She never has to feed herself or clean up after herself. Everything I have always wanted to be.
Posted by Gordon Hedges III (Member # 863) on 08-09-2004, 01:46 AM:
See, there you go. You can do all those things your cat does, but it might be in the far future in a nursing home or something. Just not now. And who wouldn't be jealous of a third nipple. I'm still wondering why men have them.
Steve Guttag
Same reasons as Brad's. I have worked with him few times and I still get amazed at how easy he fixes my machines. Sometimes I feel bad that he had to come all the way out to my theatre to flick a switch.
John Walsh
Calling him up to get help on certain equipment is a relief. He seems to have an answer for everything.
Brad Miller
To come up with an idea and stick with it and create this website is a great accomplishment. All I can do is think of an idea and then lose it when the next customer bothers me about a stupid rating on a movie.
Phil Hill
Well, he is Phil Hill.

Chris, your cat may not have to clean up after herself, but she does have to clean herself after a poop session in a manner of which you probably wouldn't enjoy.

OK, before I make my list, I'd like to dispel some misconceptions about me:
1) I'm NOT retired...just between jobs.
2) I don't live in Hollywood, I actually live in Colorado with Joe.
3) I'm not the "life of any party" since I am very shy and I never go out and I'm a "shut-in".
4) I'm NOT gay, my boyfriend is.
All that being said, here is my list of who I am jealous of:
Joe Redifer

Daryl C. W. O'Shea

Josh Jones

Manny Knowles

Don't worry, Richard. No one is jealous of me either. Probably because they know I am so cool that even the sheer thought of my awesomeness makes them afraid to mention my name.
Personally, I am jealous of everyone who has been banned from the forums. These individuals had the audacity to say whatever it was that was on their minds with complete disregard of any and all of its implications and the consequences that were sure to follow. While such an attitude is often condemned, such boldness should also be admired. These bold individuals with their blunt, albeit sometimes true statements should be an inspiration to us all in times of revolution, be it against the CAP code, digital cinema, or a tyrranical government.
Or at least, I think that's what I mean.

Tony, I'm glad you brought this up.
I think Phil "can get away with" that kind of post because a lot of us have met him and know him. Phil's sense of humor (such as it is) is widely appreciated, well-understood and vastly documented.
In all honesty and sincerity, YOU should not be one to "complain" about what can be gotten away with, as some of your posts have been VERY aggressive!
For example, look at what you posted in the very next sentence of that same post:
quote:
And I'm jealous of Josh Jones 'cuz he has all those cool pics in a slide show! (And he's hot! )
Wow!
One could very well argue that you seem hell-bent on transforming the Film-Tech website into your own personal dating service!

And yes, you do have to *know* Phil's sense of humor, or lack thereof...

Manny: Not "complaining" at all.
I just do admire Phil's sense of huomor and yeah, I realize he's been around F-T a lot longer than I have. I really do enjoy the humor of just about everyone on here. My post was trying to keep in the spirit of this thread.
As was my comment about Josh. I do not know him nor do I have any direct interest in him, again the comment was in the sprirt of this thread.
And I most certainly would NOT use Film-Tech as my "personal dating service". That is not the purpose of this site or any contacts I may make through here, same as it would be in any place I work. 'Nuff said!

Being around FT "longer" has NOTHING to do with what I think Manny is saying. I think he means the "way" you're presenting yourself to ALL FT members. To be very honest Tony, you were coming across as some sorta predator.
I agree... 'nuff said about all this.

Posted by Don Bruechert (Member # 1538) on 08-10-2004, 07:53 PM:
I - I - I'm Speechless.... Decrepitude or whatever that was? Well, just the other day, Rachel had to wake me up from my nappy, and she brought me my cane so I could get up and go for a walk to the toilet, where, through the grace of the prune damish I had eaten earlier in the day, I was able to do something that had to do with the constitution, but I forget - damn, I must have forgotten to take my geritol again today. There are so many advantagesages to having her here - she can pull out the clumps of hair for me and apply the rogaine like a pro, now that she is becoming one of those cosmo- cosmo- ahhh, cosmonots - yeah, that's it... anyway... she is really a good hunny - she takes my teeth out every morning and polishes them up for me, pushes my hemohrroid back in, and sends me on my way to the senior center to play some shuffleboard with the other oldsters. Then she comes and picks me up later and takes me back to the my home - it's a good thing too because I never remember where I live that late in the day. Then I go to bed at 600 and it starts all over the next day... I think she stays with me because she feels sorry for me because I am so despicable... was that the word? I forget now... So she HAS to be my hero, because she is my favorite sandwich... Oh, and maybe Phil, because he has ferrets!

Actually Ethan can and does ride like Brad sez. On my last trip to TexASS, as I was getting into town, Ethan started cruisin' beside me on 635 at 80mhp. He was controlling the bike with his feet and gave me the thumbs up. He rode next to me all the way to Brad's place. He also escorted me out of town when I left (all the way to the DallASS border) riding like that. I wondered how Ethan knew exactly when I'd get in, but it turns out that Brad has him escort certain "cool" guests to his house as a courtesy.[av=m]

Chris, Dean,
Up for a challenge?
I am!!!
The forum picture you are now witnessing,
is about 6 months old, and is not representative!
An unfortunate accident now finds me facially challenged!!!
The Beard you have all been seeing, was in fact only
two years old in the old pic.
The newer picture was taken at 18 months of growth!!!
So I now propose the following:
Film-Tech's Arse Kickin Beard Growing Contest!!!
Open to all men here!
The rules are simple:
1. The contest would consist of a 90 day growth period.
2. Each contestant would be required to submit a
time stamped before & after picture with a verified Film-Tech
witness to keep everything fair.
3. The one with the longest well groomed beard wins.
I dont have any prizes to put foreward,
but maybe our Fearless Leaders would be willing to support
the contest and offer something.
I am willing to shave what remains of the beard and take on all who believe they have a chance!!!
But I don't think anyone has the balls to step up and try
As all would have to
down before me!!!

You see mark has no reason to be jealous. He has lived a full life and had a lot of fun and done some amazing things, unlike the rest of us who spend all damn day cooped up inside our little wholes (yep I spelled it that way) never seeing the light of day.
I hereby retract my jealousness of the following people...
Brad Miller ,Because he knows Joe Redifer.. poor man..
Mark Gulbrandsen ,Because he is the shiznizzle (dear god did I just do that?)
John Pytlak ,because he IS CAP CODE..> AUGH!!!
and finally however I leave the following on my jealous list...
Thomas P. (I wont even bother spelling his last name), for the simple reason that he is the only person so far that can take my good natured abuse with only a mild electrical shock to the temples.

It is true, I am really not jealous of anyone here. The reality is that are a few here that I do admire very much. I guess for me, being jealous of someone just doesn't generally enter the picture.
So here are a few that I hold in high regard and admire, and the reasons......
Brad Miller... For starting and maintianing this site and for inventing Filmguard and patenting it.
John Pytlak... For his incredible knowledge and all his acomplishments at EKC.
Ray Derrick... For having the guts to continue building the best analog Cinema processor available when all else have gone down the dismal digital highway.
Steve Guttag... For the perfectness in just about all he does.
Gord Mcleod... For rescuing a friend during a bad time of his life, and for the exactness he imparts in his work. Been there seen it, worked with him, and so on....
These four by far contribute the most to this site overall simply through their posts. Take away these four and not much is left.

Thanks Mark.
We ALL contribute to the site, Film-Tech wouldn't be the same if the same members were not present. We just all have different "quirks" that make this site so popular, useful, and I dare say...fun.
Yes, some contribute more then others but I wouldn't say not much is left if those four were not with us, with the exception of Brad because then there wouldn't be a site.

Posted by Steve Guttag (Member # 268) on 08-15-2004, 12:14 PM:
Hmmm...this is s thread I hadn't read before. The reason I took a peek was because Mark G. was the last to post and I generally will read what he has to say....seeing his most recent post and then looking up a couple of messages...I see my name mentioned....hmmmm.
I see a new thread is to be started but I choose to respond on this one since it contains the instigating message...
As to those members Mark G. denotes (Brad, John P., Ray Derrick, me and Gordon)...it is interesting that those members do tend to get my attention more than others (depending on topic heading, of course).
However I do find it interesting that with all of them I've had my little, shall we say, spats.
With Brad....there is the ever Reel-to-reel vs. Changeover debates.
With John P. All you need is about 100 hours to kill and read our Cyan vs traditional applicated soundtracks.
With Ray Derrick...there hasn't really been any spats so I guess there is an exception to a rule though there was a minor disagreement on the use of Cat. 97 versus Buzz Track for accurate reverse scan reader alignment and also the Cat. 566 usage...again VERY minor...nothing compared to the endless threads on other topics.
With Gordy...well it is kinda like a comedian with a President...there is no end of material...I mean, for example...he takes most every opportunity to talk about some piece of SMART equipment...how can one just leave that alone? However it is just in fun.
With Mark G...there are numerous confrontation between us since many of his posts come down to the form of: "its the best and the only thing that should be used" or of the form: "it sucks and should never be used"...very little grey area.
Now with the above jabbing out of the way...each and every one above has earned my respect. When you see them post something, you can take it at face value. Their findings are what they are and not something merely dreamed up. I like to think the same comes from myself.
Two types of response posts I absolutely detest are:
A) I don't know anything about the subject but feel I have to write something so here let me type something that doesn't come from experience with your piece of equipment...I hope it helps...never mind it isn't what the original question asked for.
Sure this type of person means well but all they contribute in that situation is static and waste everyone's time with the thread.
B) I have limited experience with the subject matter so I'll steamroller them by dumping my entire knowledge (limited though it may be) in the hopes of answering the question or dazzeling them into thinking I know.
A typical (hypothetical) type of situation like this would be a question that says "How does format 43, 70mm 6-track magnetic with stereo surrounds, work?
The response will take the form of explaining how formats 04 (Dolby SVA)...perhaps SR, 70mm, maybe 35mm magnetic and often would actually not accurately describe how format 43 actually works...they would probably feel the need to talk about the history of the processors starting with the CP50 or so (whichever they have used) on up.
This sort of response will show up here on Film-tech and on rec.arts.movies.tech.
Information should be accurate and as concise as possible to get the information accross accurately. If you don't know, you don't know and don't need to muck up the thread with ignorance.
I think Mark's list is a bit limited and I'm sure upon reflection he indeed would add names to it but if you look at that list (take me off it and add Mark if you desire), you generally get good sound information from them that may very well add to your knowledge base. Gordy is probably the most likely to throw a quip in here or there but I think that is just an attempt to increase his post count and rarely are they long if not containing knowledge.
All questions are good...except those that do not provide reasonable details...like make/model of the euqipment and the events leading up to the problem...those that violate this common sense should go to Brad's paint can mixer since clearly something got stuck in your head between asking the question and typing it.

Ok, not sure if I'd call it jealousy -- certainly envy -- but nonetheless, here's the short list (in no particular order):
I be jealous of:
John Pytlak
And he knows it. Let's face it, he's got the coolest job - and a technical Oscar®. Pretty much says it all.
Gordon McLeod
And he knows it. A fine engineer and walking knowledge base. Nice guy, too... he went out of his way to photocopy and send me a Hycandescent manual once, which I only expressed a desire to have, here on FT. I'll never forget that. There's no one I'd rather have service my booth than Gordon. I believe you can count on him to get the job done, and done right.
Dominic Case
This humble man is at the forefront of laboratory practices and technology, and the author of several books on the subject. No one knows it better, nor made conveying those intricate topics to readers easier. I admired him long before he became a forum member.
Brad Miller
Because he's Brad Miller - with a patent to prove it. And what a screening room! I would have his child for it.
Mark Gulbrandsen
For his exemplary skill in the machine shop and precision work. I've told him this many times, and he agrees.
Scott Norwood
Because he's young, smart, and living a life I envy -- doing what he wants, when he wants to. And remaining single. If I could only retain half of the information that Scott can, I'd... well, probably have John Pytlak's job!
Joe Redifer
Because he likes videomaking. He's always quick to offer help in that area, too. He's a sharp wit, and always gets a laugh out of me. I respect that. Plus, Jennifer Pan thinks he's hot, so okay, I AM jealous of that.
Steve Kraus
This guy impresses the heck out of me. Some of the constructs he comes up with are simply brilliant. Steve has my highest esteem.
Michael Schaffer
Because he can speak 50 different languages, and has a large vocabulary and understanding of idioms in them all. Humor is very difficult in other languages as well, which he can also pull off. I'm sure impressed.
Individuals I love like family: (in addition to certain of those above)
Phil Hill
For all the reasons everyone else has mentioned, and more. It was a toss up whether to list him here, or above for his technical skill and achievements, but I really do like Phil. I get more rotf guffaws out of him than anyone. (He's also a brilliant mind and astute engineer who I greatly admire.)
Rachel Gilardi
What a cutie-pie! She's so sweet.
Adam Martin
A sharp fellow. And he makes me laugh. Good combination.
Bruce McGee
I've always felt a kinship towards Bruce, and consider him a friend... ever since he took his first swig of Film Guard!
I identify with his television work and NC locale, as well.
OK...
End of short list. Don't feel bad if you're not on here, it doesn't mean I don't love you, there's just not enough hours. Anyway, there's only one or two folks out of the thousands in the whole FT family that I absolutely cannot stand, and even though it would be easier to do so, I won't list them here. I'm pretty sure they already know who they are, and the feeling's mutual.

Brad Miller: For his popular film products and his dedication to strictly administer these forums (I've seen moderators/admins at other sites let a lot of things slide). Also, his first name is my middle name.
John Pytlak: Known as "The Human Search Engine" and an Academy Award Winning technician.
Joe Redifer: For having the guts to do some of the things he did shown in his 'training' videos.
Gordon McLeod: He's worked with IMAX No. 1!
Rachel Gilardi: Because she's not just a moderator, she's 'Madam Moderator'.

I really enjoy my "cool" job. Right now I participate on about thirty Internet user groups related to motion picture technology. Gordon McLeod told me about Film-Tech in the summer of 1999. Film-Tech is among those I enjoy the most, and has a great group of people, many of whom know each other professionally and are friends. As Steve Guttag notes, we may all have our occasional disagreements, but coming together to improve the quality of cinema presentation is what we all share and care about. This site is a "labor of love" for Brad, and it shows.

Speaking of technical Oscars, how to we get Brad one? I know it is too late for this year, but how about next? And I don't wanna hear that he needs to be recommended by 90 different people in high standing within the industry or something like that. It should be what you know, not who you know. And if any of this "it's who you know" comes in to play, then Brad knows me and that should be overqualification right there. I mean, you know me and YOU have an Oscar. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Here's the procedure:
http://www.oscars.org/scitech/index.html
quote:
Any device, method, formula, discovery or invention of special and outstanding value to the arts and sciences of motion pictures -- and employed in the motion picture industry during the awards year -- can be considered for recognition. The steps involved in the process have been carefully determined since the awards began. They, and the award rules, are reviewed annually and when there is room for improvement they are altered.
A committee of experts in their respective fields is organized each year by a chairman who is appointed by the president of the Academy. Approximately 40 people constitute the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee, representing cinematography (production and technical), digital imaging, electronics and research, film and laboratory, lighting and equipment, mechanical or optical effects and engineering, production, projection, exhibition techniques and sound.
Letters are sent to individuals and companies known to be concerned with the tools and techniques of filmmaking in an annual canvass asking for information about new devices or methods that have been used on the production of feature films. Accompanying the letter are an entry form, the Academy's rules for the award category and a copy of established guidelines that help the committee weigh the eligibility of the applications. Entry forms are returned to the Academy within the time allowed for compiling the applications and distributing the information to members of the committee.
All of the entries are numbered and bound into a volume, which is then sent to each of the committee members. A meeting notice is attached and the committee begins an arduous program of study and debate on the submitted items.
At its first meeting, usually held in mid-September, the committee discusses the merits of each entry. Does it fall within the parameters and guidelines for Scientific and Technical Awards? Is the item too new to the industry? Is it more than just an incremental improvement over current or previously awarded technology in this area? The validity of claims made about each submission is accepted or challenged, but a decision must be made whether or not an entry is eligible for further consideration. Not all of the submitted entries are carried forward beyond this first meeting. Some might be tabled for evaluation at a later date if the committee is curious to know what impact the items may have on the industry in the future (recommending an award prematurely might not reflect the actual contribution an item eventually makes to filmmaking). If an entry does not meet the qualifications of the rules or guidelines, the committee is obligated to reject it (though if significant improvements or alterations are made, or in some cases simply more exposure occurs in an entry originally rejected, it may be resubmitted in a future year).
Scientific and Technical Awards Committee Chair Richard Edlund.
If all the criteria are met, an invitation may be extended to the applicant offering him or her the opportunity of making a presentation of the item to the committee. If similar devices are available to the industry (but have not been submitted with an entry form) their manufacturers may also be invited to participate. Subcommittees are enlisted to provide the main committee with additional evaluations of the demonstrated items. In all instances, whether an item is demonstrated or not, surrogates are assigned to make detailed evaluations on behalf of the committee.
Prior to the final voting meeting in early December, the Main Committee and the Academy's Board of Governors are sent booklets that contain all the evaluations of the remaining Sci/Tech entries. These include all surrogate reports and subcommittee evaluations (of any items reviewed at the demonstrations). At the meeting the remaining entries are discussed again with particular emphasis on whether or not an award should be recommended. (The committee itself does not confer the Scientific and Technical Awards. Those are determined by a vote of the Academy Board of Governors.) Through a series of ballots, decisions are reached on the award recommendations and their appropriate levels of recognition. Some of the items may not be recommended -- even though they were under consideration and demonstrated for the committee. Some might be held for another year through a motion to table.
Award recognition for scientific and technical achievement is given on three levels. Technical Achievement Awards may be made for those accomplishments that contribute to the progress of the industry. A certificate is printed describing the achievement and listing the names of all of the individuals who contributed to its development.
If an achievement has had a definite influence on the advancement of the industry, it may qualify for a Scientific and Engineering Award (a bronze tablet with the name of the award in raised lettering, and a representation of the Oscar statuette in bas relief to one side of the plaque). Affixed to the base is a plate engraved with a description of the achievement and the names of the contributors.
An Academy Award of Merit, the Oscar, is conferred for basic achievements which have a definite influence on the advancement of the industry (hard-won and most often reserved for some aspect of filmmaking that has changed the way particular achievements have been accomplished since its introduction).
I do not currently serve on the Academy Scientific and Technical Awards Committee, but as a previous award winner, I do receive the entry form each year. I'm sure you could also write the Sci-Tech Committee for an entry form.
