Somebody needs to transcribe track #8 of the new Jeff Foxworthy CD for this thread. (The track is called "I Believe.")
Of course that would mean someone would have to admit owning said CD.
Posted by William Hooper (Member # 71) on 08-23-2004, 02:15 AM:
I haven't heard the Foxworthy one, but people often quote from the one Steve Martin did on records, TV, etc. a while back
http://www.farid-hajji.net/fun/ge-ibelieve.html
It's actually a very old monologists' device. Monologists call themselves stand-up comics now, but the mechanism has been a standard schematic device through vaudeville, burlesque, revues, all the way back through monologists booked as singles as part of the bill at theatres through the centuries, to soliloquies from various clowns. It's in the box along with monologist structures like 'my story', etc.
There's a tight sort of restriction to the scope & number of monologist devices due to the restrictions of not being fed straight lines, not having a stage situation to react to, only being able to address the audience, etc.
Not a big Steve Martin fan, but you can usually find some good gags even if it's just in the writing in any large body of work:
"And people say I'm crazy for believing this, but I believe that robots are stealing my luggage."

I believe that last night while I was on Bourbon Street between parades, I must have stepped in a puddle that had a dead cat dissolved in it or something.
I believe that none of these damn tourists knows how to pronounce "Tchoupitoulas Street".
I believe that any Mardi Gras observance which does not some how involve Moon Pies is empty & meaningless, not that Mardi Gras is supposed to mean anything anyway, besides walking around half blitzed & making a racket as per the intiating Mardi Gras example of Michael Kraft & the Cowbellion De Rakin Society.
I believe today will be a long, loud day, & hard on the Moon Pies.

In that case, William, I believe it must be Fat Tuesday in Nawlins.
Bon ton roula.

I believe it will be closely followed by my 33rd.

I believe I haven't been to Fat Tuesday or stayed at a Bourbon St hotel since the "Macarena" was the rage!
(Where are my beads?)

It's better to FART and smell and little
Than hold it back and be a cripple!

I believe the saying, "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all," is complete crap.

I believe I agree with James... It just hurts too much!
If ya don't know what you've missed out on, then it IS better and doesn't hurt!
