I am afraid of Erick Akers' beard.

I am afraid that guy who is supposed to close the curtain in 10 minutes has fallen asleep.

I am afraid of someday running a movie & having Brad Miller & Steve Guttag suddenly show up during a reel, flatten the light better, pull out 2 more fL of light, adjust the lens somehow to create perfect focus all the way across & up & down, knock the pickup sound head backhand to get 3khz more HF frequency response, & then look at me in a marked manner.

I am very afraid that the hurricane may have destroyed Thomas Procyk's computer, eliminating access to his life-sustaining internet pornography.

I am afraid of Mark Gulbrandsen's service van, which contains all the usual ton of service crap plus 200 different platter motors, 40 matched pairs of mirrors for different lamphouses, Norelco lamp tables & gates, and a full machine shop.

I am afraid of driving across Mississippi with someone who will ask me to pronounce the name of the Tchoutacabouffa River.

I am afraid that someone soon will go upside Jack Valenti's head, & we will all be hauled in for questioning.

I am afraid my neighbor's yapping dog has been tied to the doorknob of the Korean restaurant down on Airport Boulevard.

I'm afraid of the evil booth monkey who gradually makes his way around from projector to projector and causes havoc of a technical nature. Every booth has one, but ours is particularly sly. (The 35mm guys have insinuated that we IMAX folk own and cage the monkey ... if that's the case, then our monkey has turned on his owners, too!) Frightening.

I'm afraid that there were actually people who thought Catwoman in IMAX was a good idea.

I'm afraid I'm not thinking of a great response and it's only after I post that I'll think of it.

EDIT: [Smile] I'm afraid of the Post Your Beliefs Here thread. [Razz]

I am afraid of thrown prints.

I am afraid of customers gaining entry to the booth and accosting me whilst I thread up.

I am afraid of late starts.

I am afraid of mustard on the screen (it's happened, not a pretty sight)

I am afraid of denists and needles, and I have an appointment with both tomorrow. Yipp-a-freakin-ee.

I am also afraid of heights. I remember my first job at a movie theatre with a large street facing marquee. I wanted to be the person in charge of getting up there and putting all the titles up. However when I got up to the top, I freaked out. There was only one steel beam to grab hold of and a large gap where anything and anyone could fall through. I chickened out, and the actual President of the company got up there and did it himself. I was very lucky I wasn't fired. But, it was opening weekend and they needed all the help they could get. I later became the manger of that theatre. Go figure. [Smile]

There are way better insects to be afraid of than grasshoppers, which don't bite and are actually sort of cool looking in a bent sort of way.

I am afraid of wasps, bats, big dogs, and talking in front of crowds.

I'm also afraid -- or maybe "apprehensive" would be a better word -- of leaving my theatre in the care of anyone but myself, a fact which tends to drive my poor wife crazy at times.

I'm afraid of quarter-ton beehives and kids with rocks.

Watertowers: Sometimes I will look at a water tower and try to imagine that all of the steel suddenly disappeared and for a brief moment a huge spheroid or ellipsoid of water was just hanging in mid-air and then came crashing down.

Unfortunately, with recent increase in terrorism alerts, I am afraid to be "stuck" on a major bridge or going slowly through an underwater tunnel. [Frown]

(I hope someone is occasionally checking what's inside some of those 18-wheelers and panel trucks) [Eek!] I assume truckers are keeping on eye out for "strangers" to the profession.

I feel the best advice today it "get to know your neighbor", whether it's who's at the truck stop, sitting next to you in the airport lounge, or trying to buy ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Just think if those flying schools had all reported their suspicions earlier, as the one in Minnesota did when Zacarias Moussaoui tried to take flying lessons.

That thought crosses my mind everyday. I am actually glad that I have to go through the police truck checks. They're really bearing down on the little 6-wheeler/moving-van type trucks, too.

Brilliant move almost 40 years ago to tear down an architectural masterpiece of a railroad station (Pennsylvania Station aka Penn Station) and build a sports arena (Madison Square Garden, site of the GOP confab) atop it, while the busy train station is compressed into the basement level.

I'm afraid that was the work of idiots.

It was Robert Moses. [Frown]

http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Penn_Station

quote:
The destruction of the original structure, although justified as progressive in the trade at the time and largely ignored by non-professional Americans, nevertheless left a deep and lasting wound in the architectural consciousness of the city. A famous photograph of a smashed caryatid in the landfill of the Meadowlands struck a guilty chord. Pennsylvania Station's destruction is considered to have been the catalyst for the enactment of the city's first architectural preservation statutes...

...The above-ground components of this structure (the platforms are below street level) were demolished in 1964, without disrupting the essential day-to-day operations, to make way for present-day Madison Square Garden. The demolition of such a well-known landmark and its replacement by a mediocre slab of real estate was widely deplored and is often cited as a catalyst for the architectural preservation movement in the United States, and for laws restricting such demolition. Immediately after the demolition of this original Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal was declared a monument and protected by law. It also hurt the already arrogant reputation of master developer Robert Moses, whose plans for a Lower Manhattan Expressway were scrapped due to public protests and a rejection of the plan by the city government.

I assume truckers are keeping on eye out for "strangers" to the profession.
Several weeks ago, my company sent a fleetwide message asking us to be vigilant and report anything that seemed askew. The thing is, companies have a pretty good handle on where their trucks are, what they're hauling, who's driving, and whether or not they're making scheduled appointments. Most companies also have continuous GPS fixes on their entire fleet. If a truck isn't where it's supposed to be at a particular time, it shows up in red on the dispatcher's screen and they know immediately. If they have to, they can shut the truck down remotely.

It's the little independents and no-name haulers (like so many container pullers that run through the city and the shipyards every day) that are the unknown quantity, and they are indeed coming under great scrutiny at the police checks.

Some of the photos of Penn Station's last days show that it was in pretty poor condition. It had some remodeling at the front, was about as messy as the subway stations in the 1970's, all that square mile or so of glass panes in the roof/ceiling was grungy/oily/nasty etc. It was huge, cranny-dense & a custodial nightmare. The roof alone would have been a major, expensive, ongoing cleaning project.

I think that story is from the NY Times about the destruction of Penn Station which has the line like "a city gets the architecture it deserves", but it also mentions that "in the end, they couldn't even keep it clean."

I am afraid of running out of oil in the differential & lunching another in the middle of nowhere, & obsessively think about it.

I'm afraid that if I had Bill Gate's billions I would buy up MSG and rebuild Penn Station as it was. That and the nationwide network of 70mm & Cinerama venues.

(My other brilliant idea to lighten Bill's pockets was to overhaul the SS United States and since the conversion from steam turbines to combustion turbines or diesels would make it a motor ship it would be renamed the MS United States. Get it? But someone has already taken this on.)
