I do a few historical presentations, some of them PowerPoint slideshows. I recently received a nice gift, really old 16mm transferred to video, and then DVD. But I can't run them. In both of my pooters I have Windwos Media Player, Real Player, Windows Movie Maker, and InterVideo WinDVD. They won't play the DVD. My desktop has Windows ME, and my laptop has XP.

I'm sure it's simple, but what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Have you checked to see if the DVD will play in a regular stand-alone DVD player? You might want to do that as a trouble shooting measure to make sure the disc isn't scratched up or rotted. Also make sure the disc is not coded for a different region.

I'm going to ask an even more simple question...do you have a CDROM drive, or a DVD drive in your puter?

Both pooters have a DVD player, and the 2 DVDs play just fine in the living room player.

Given that it won't work in either computer but will in set-top players, this looks like a software issue. That having been said, some older PC DVD drives, especially those in laptops, don't like home-burnt discs. The drive in my last laptop (a Dell bought in 2001) wouldn't play DVD+Rs at all, but for some reason would play most DVD-Rs. The drive in my current laptop (an HP/Compaq bought around this time last year) will play anything. I guess there's an outside chance that both the PC drives you've tried don't like home burnt media.

You may just have to update the drivers for the software you are using. Go to their respective sites and look for any updates.
