Oh come on, you're almost all guys here! I know we're all geeks but doesn't anyone watch sports? Does one of the few women on this site have to be the one to bring this up??? [Razz]

In case you didn't know... The Red Sox won the pennant over the Yankees, also making history as the first team to EVER come back in the 7 game race after losing the first 3 games.

Finally breaking "the curse", this is the first time the Red Sox have won the pennant since 1918.

GO SOX!!!! [beer]

What sport, and where are they from?

I do. It is un-be-freakin-levable that they pulled it off. Well maybe not as they are a really great team but to do it to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium after going down 3-0 is just awesome. Being from California I have been a Dodger fan all my life yet when the Dodgers lost the race I have been pulling for the Red Socks.

I'm a Yankees fan, thru and thru...

That said, I have to hand it to the Sox.. they kicked ass, plain and simple. To come back from and win the final four IN A ROW - AT YANKEE STADIUM (not all 4 were at Y/S)... impressive!

I have to admire their taste for victory and their tenacity to do so given the odds. If it had to have been anyone, I'm glad it was the Sox... Bittersweet, but it's good to see someone other than the Yankees in the Series... every once in a while.. [Smile]

Now I'm banking on the Astro's to come thru and wipe the Sox clean.. [Smile] *Played little league on the Astro's team*

Unfortunately for the Sox, "the curse" has still yet to be broken. They have won the American League Championship (AL Pennant) 11 times in total, including last night. They have now done it in: 1903, 1904, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1946, 1967, 1975, 1986, and 2004. However, they have not won a World Series since 1918 (They've won 5: 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918), which they have still yet to do.

They've got a bit of work still left to do before they can call the curse "officially" broken, though most think this series was a sign that it's gone.

For those who don't know, "The Curse of the Bambino" is the name given to the fact that the Boston Red Sox have been uanble to win a World Series Championship in nearly 90 years. The last they won (As noted above) was 1918, with Babe Ruth as an essential part to that victory (As well as the ones in 1915 and 1916) as a pitcher and a hitter. In 1920, he was sold to the New York Yankees. Before 1920, the Yankees had not won a single World Series championship, and since then they have won 26 for the Sox's 0. "The Curse" got to be well-known mainly in 1986, when the Red Sox were 1 strike away from winning the World Series, and then had a massive collapse, including a ball that went straight through the legs of the first baseman that let the New York Mets win the game (And then the World Series the next day).

One last note...they *were* the first team in Major League Baseball to come back from a 3-game deficit (3-0) to win a seven-game series, and it has also never happened in the NBA (Basketball), but it *has* happened twice in the NHL (Hockey). First in 1942 with the Toronto Maple Leafs coming back to beat the Detroit Red Wings, and most recently in 1975 with the New York Islanders overcoming the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, this is probably the most impressive of the 3 comebacks, if you consider that in Game 3, the Yankees won 19-8 and by all rights that should have destroyed whatever was left of the Boston morale, and the fact that Games 6 and 7 were played at Yankee Stadium...possibly the most incredible comeback in sports history.

Boston has lost four World Series to the Cardinals in 1946, 1967, the Cincinnati Reds in 1975 & the Mets in 1986. This makes the 11th pennant for the Red Sox, their first since 1986.

To break "the curse", first they need to win the World Series. [Eek!]

Nobody cares about baseball. Nobody. Why not? Because baseball players are pussies. One drop of rain and they all come running off the field and cover it with a tarp. What a bunch of pansie-asses! Will they melt if the rain touches them or something? Football continues in any weather, because they are real athletes. Football players are also not addicted to tobacco. Anyone who uses any kind of tobacco has problems. Most of baseball is just guys hitting fouls again and again anyway. EXCITING! How people can watch this drivel is beyond me. People have no lives. I bet people sitting on the couch get more exercise than baseball players do just getting up to get more food for their fat asses. Watching baaseball is almost like watching a photograph.

That said, it is nice seeing the Yankees get their asses handed to them in HD Dolby Digital 5.1. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's the same god damned team winning or coming in second place year after year. Yankees deserved it, those assholes. Also, I could be wrong, but doesn't Boston use mostly American lazy asses, whereas NY imports most if their lazy asses from Cuba or someplace retarded like that?

Same here, I didn't care much for it. Rachel, when I read your post... all I got out of it was that some team won. The other large percentage I had no clue what you were talking about. The team names do sound familiar. I was at the music store yesterday, when they had the game on and one of the guys kept yelling and screaming about some team (assuming the Red Soxs) was leading by 6 to 1. The guy went postal all jumping up and down and running around.

If the Sox win the World Series, someone needs to sit them down and say, "Okay, hope you guys have learned your lesson. Now, the next time you get another Babe Ruth..."

I drove by Yankee Stadium in my big truck last night, just as the first pitch went out. The sky was lit pretty good. I pulled into Worcester, MA shortly after the game ended. I tooted my big air horn at the revellers as they were pouring out of bars, hollering. They were lit pretty good, too.

Okay. I have a rant (I know what your thinking....I always rant). Why is it that when you are a guy that other guys automatically assume you care about sports at all. They just start asking you questions like....."Hey, how about those Sox?" What socks, the ones I'm wearing?

For some reason when you tell them you don't watch sports they clam up and have nothing to talk about after that. It's like they can't even carry on an intelligent conversation with you if they can't talk about sports or something. Then you are some kind of pussy to them just because you don't care about sports.

I know guys who totally ignore their wives whenever there is a game on. Then when their wife leaves them they don't know why. Is sports really that important? When you are 80 and on your death bed are you really going to look back and regret that you didn't watch enough sports? No. Your going to regret not spending more time with your family because you had your nose glued to the tv all the time.

Besides if you want to watch a real sport watch boxing. They beat each other. Not like these pussies playing football and baseball.

Josh

Hey, John!

WHO's YOUR DADDY!?

I lived in Boston for 7 years. Nobody will admit it but there's an secret to being a Sox fan: The secret is to get used to the fact that they WILL lose!

No doubt about it in my mind. Just ask Bill Buckner! He'll tell you. The Red Sox ALWAYS lose! Once you get that through your head the rest is easy.

You see, all these supposed fans out there, going crazy because they beat the Yankees are just a bunch of posers... just like any team who gets close to winning the championship and all the supposed "fans" come out of the woodwork... they aren't real fans.

REAL Red Sox fans like us, just sit back and relax and wait for them to lose.

Why don't we just go back to the Gladiator days where some guy winds up butchering the other in front of the screaming mob? That's basically what many Americans want to see afterall. Bloodthirsty perverts.

I like baseball. Granted, it can be damned boring to just watch a game -especially a no-hitter. Whenever one pitcher is working on a no hit game you almost always have the opposing pitcher throwing 1-hit or 2-hit ball. The score ends up being 1 to 0. Really exciting. Yawn.

But here's why I like baseball: anyone can play it. That is NOT the case for football or basketball or even hockey for that matter. You have to be a genetic mutant to one extreme or another to be successful at any of those other sports. For football, you have to be some giant monolith able to bench press a pickup truck. Basketball requires you to be afflicted with giganticism disease. Hockey requires you to be a big hothead with serious periodontal disease. Baseball requires players to have skill, not physical prowess. Fast wits, great eye-hand coordination, etc. is what makes a baseball player successful, not being the biggest, tallest or meanest son of a bitch on the field.

Oh, and I am glad the Red Sox won. Game 7 was entertaining. Lots of home runs. The Yankees were so damned smug and full of themselves (especially A-Rod) that being victims of the biggest come from behind victory in baseball playoff history couldn't have happened to a more deserving team.

Dammit. Houston lost. It'll probably be another 18 years before the Astros claw their way into another NLCS (only to probably lose again).

Guess they'll get to tack another year onto that 40-some-odd year tally of most years for a baseball franchise to exist without even an appearance in the World Series, much less a win.

I was hoping the Astros would win. A Houston versus Boston series would have been great since both teams have been denied in various ways for way the hell too long already. It would not have mattered to me which team would win since fans of both would be extremely appreciative of a victory.

On the bright side, at least it isn't a New York versus St. Louis series. The Yankees have, what, 49867 appearances in the World Series followed by St. Louis with 5893? Ok, so I'm exaggerating. But the Yankees and Cardinals are number 1 and 2 on trips to the World Series. Pretty damned boring to see the same teams going to back to the series again and again and again.

I hope the Red Sox crush the Cardinals. Only a World Series victory would break "the curse."

Oh, HELL NO!

And the Red Sox winning the pennant TO ME is breaking at least some of the curse, they haven't won a pennant in 18 years. Yes, I was alive when they won the last pennant but I was far too young to remember. I grew up watching the Sox and for them to finally win the pennant is good enough for me. I'd LOVE to see them take it all but I will always remember what happened as I watched them beat the Yankees in game 7. I had my mom (in Boston) on the phone and she started screaming that they won about 3 seconds before I saw the catch, damn delay in satellite TV!!! [Mad]

If Boston wins (a *BIG* IF) Red Sox fans should all get on a bus to Chicago and fill the stands for the Cubs' first game next season. That way they could make some of their good Mojo rub off on the Cubs!

Actually, nobody from Boston will be going to Chicago next year because the Sox AREN'T going to win. They'll lose just like every other time! They always have. They always will.

Something stupid is going to happen. I just know it. It'll be the bottom of the 9th inning. Two men on base. Two outs. Boston will be ahead by 2 runs. Some Schmoe will hit a pop-up straight up into the air. Martinez will go for a routine catch but he'll miss it. It'll conk him right on top of the noggin and put his lights out. He'll be lying on the field in a coma. Noboby will be able to make the play because he'll be lying on top of the ball, laid-out cold. Martinez will come-to just in time to see the winning run cross home plate. Game Over!

C'Mon! You KNOW it's going to happen!

Oh, nothing. I guess I should've mentioned it was overcast and they had the lights on in the stadium (since it was nighttime and they wanted to play ball). With the stadium lights against the clouds, it lit the sky up enough to illuminate the freeway interchange. It was quite a sight, I thought it was the second coming. As for the Red Sox and baseball on general....

I lost all respect for baseball years back when those girlie men, weanies, good for nothins, over paid bastards, or what ever you want to call em went on strike. Today I root for the ball park instead of the teams and the ONLY one to go to is beautiful Wrigley Field, the last GREAT ball park left. The food there is really good too.
Lets see, the last game I went to was when Harry Carey was still the announcer there......

A two games to none lead is great. But the Red Sox were up two games to none on the Mets. The best case scenario for them would be to win at least two of the next three games in St. Louis.

I don't think they're going to be able to get another start out of Curt Schilling. The doctors have been flirting with disaster on that stitching work they've been doing his ankle. Anymore jerry-rigging on that injury could risk permanent damage. Schilling has a lot of guts and determination to play hurt like that. But he doesn't need to risk ending his career prematurely.

The Cardinals are undefeated at home in this postseason. The Red Sox cannot afford to allow the Cards to take two or all three of those games.

Please educate me on the World Series. How many god damn games does a baseball team have to win in order to take home the trophy, cup, or whatever? 190? 300? What the hell? Baseball sucks.

There are 162 games in the regular season, which lasts from April through October.

The teams are divided into two leagues (American and National); each league has three divisions. For each league, the winner of each division, plus the non-division-winning team with the best record during the regular season (the "wildcard") play a 5-game series (must win three) to narrow the field down to four teams (two per league). The two remaining teams in each league play each other in a 7-game series (must win four). This leaves two teams (the American League Champion [Sox] and the National League Champion [Cardinals]), who play each other in the World Series, which is a 7-game series (must win four).

It's really pretty simple...much more so than pro football, etc.

Baseball has way too many games. I don't know how people can find the time to watch next to nothing happen 4 times a week. A ball! Another ball! Oh a hit! No, it's a foul. Another ball. Foul! Foul! Foul! Yeah, baseball is great. I guess it works if you have trouble sleeping.

Only if you consider real athletes genetic mutants, likely hopped up on steroids. To be successful in football or basketball, you must be born with the genes to be able to play. Ability alone won't get you to the big leagues in either sport.

In many respects, todays professional sports is an overglorified farce! It's more about technological advancements in equipment than it is about the athlete and basic equipment.

I am an avid bowler, and I clearly remember the "transition" from wood/lacquer lanes with rubber bowling balls to the "modern" artificial lanes and urathane balls. It is funny to watch these "professionals" come to a turnament with dozens of pre-drilled balls, only to have lots more made-up at the tournament...and still not be able to bowl worth a crap! There is no-one around today that can hold a candle to greats Verapapa, Salvino, Anthony, etc. Although I have great respect for Dick Webber, that loser son of his should be banned from the pros, along with the other notorious "McEnroe" of bowling, Marshall Holman, who I personally saw booed out of Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson by the entire spectator crowd.

Another favorite of mine, pool. Whatever happened to the likes of "Fats", Crane, Masconi, etc, etc...carefree street-wise hustlers who also put on a "show" at the table! I was watching an ESPN tournament Sat...the commentators where talking about the immense complexity of otherwise simple shots that the hustlers of years ago would not think twice about! The players are all serious and quiet/intense...and they still screwed-up big time!

Commentators! Someone PLEASE super-glue, staple or sew John Maddens lips shut! Cossel was another pain in the WAHOO!

College sports! The immense popularity of the Lute Olsen and the AZ Wildcats in Tucson! Our state government in in a defecit, and our economy could be better. All three AZ public university just had record-setting tuition increases starting this semester. Not enough money for programs, faculty and the like. But a dumb-ass jock coach is the highest paid state employee. This jock coach gets close to a $50k bonus if all his athletes maintain minimum academic standards!

Basketball...don't even get me going there! Dennis Rodman and freaks like that!

Baseball...I hate the Yankees..or I should say Steinbrenner...one of the worst things ever to happen to professional sports! Baseball players of today are a bunch of spoiled crybaby mult-millionares who go on strike! They are sooo taken advantage of....GET REAL!

And I could go on!

Seriously, I think some people, wont mention Will's name, condemn an entire sport based on one particular athlete or team. Like the Yankees or Dennis Rodman. They dont represent the entire field. I am good luck for Ortiz. I must have seen almost all his big hits in the last 3 games and not much else in the game(I watched maybe 6 innings of the entire Red sox-yanks series and all after Yanks went up 3-0).

I dont care what happens in the WS. Boring. My only concern right now is for the Steelers to somehow upset the other Boston team this week.

Great, a sports thread. And baseball, no less!

Until now I thought I must be the only sports fan here. Where were you guys when I posted here regarding my trips across the country to see games in every stadium???

Being an Anaheim fan and originally from Orange County, California, I have reasons to dislike the Red Sox ('86 anyone...). But, I'm secretly rooting for them in the series. Reverse the curse for sure; I'm sick of hearing about it!

Steve Guttag is a real baseball fan.

My father's cousin played for the Cleveland Indians (Catcher for Hall-of-Famer Bob Feller) and Boston Red Sox during the 1930's and 1940's:

Pytlak was a small catcher at 160 pounds and seldom completed a full season in an injury-plagued career. JL x x He was a good contact hitter who batted over .300 four times.

Frankie Pytlak was born on Thursday, July 30, 1908, and began his Major League baseball career on April 22, 1932, with the Cleveland Indians. The 24 year-old played for 12 seasons on 2 different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1946.

With a relative who played for the Red Sox, and a daughter who lives in Boston, guess who I'm rooting for! [thumbsup]

Your father's cousin? Wouldn't that be your cousin as well? I'm confused by the way they label cousins as "twice removed" and what have you. Cousins are the scourge of mankind.

Red Sox are now up 3 games to none against the Cardinals. Very good pitching from Pedro Martinez. A few heads up defensive plays from the infield. Now all they have to win is just 1 out of 4 possible games. If they lose the next four, there definitely is a curse at work.

I doubt if any Red Sox fans would really want their team to chance it by blowing the next two games just so they can win in Boston. I think they would all be just as happy if the Red Sox win 1 of the next 2 in St. Louis. A win tomorrow night, for a series sweep, would be a fitting way to finish off "the curse."

What is this "curse" bullshit everyone keeps harping about? Babe Ruth is dead and I'd say mostly decomposed right now. If you dug him up it wouldn't be a pretty site. Think about it. Think about what he must look like RIGHT NOW. He is in no condition to influence baseball anymore. Also, he was fat.

Ah. Apparently nobody has any idea whatsoever.

Here is another baseball question:
What is up with many of the batter's helmets and some of the bats? They literally look like they're decomposing. The top of the batting helmets look wet, mushy and like they are growing fungus. Some of the bats have dark areas right above the grip that looks like the wood is rotting and is covered with chew. What the hell? Seriously.

So much for that curse. The Yankeeeezz have gotta be crying and whining to their mommie now. The assholes. I wonder who George Steinbrenner is going to fire over this thing this time.

I could not give a luke warm popcorn fart if the Yankees see another world series for the next 500 years. They've been "bogarting" it for too long anyway and it got Goddamned boring! Shit, get the Mets in there for Christ's sake if a NY team is going to represent in the 'series. The Yankees, and their fans, are just damned boring. At least the Mets and their fans appreciate getting in the biggest series in all of baseball.

And I can say that with authority seeing as how unappreciative and overly cocky as many Yankees fans had become over the years. I lived in New York City for five years and saw the arrogance for myself. At least the Mets fans kept it in perspective and had some humility. Yankees fans act like it is a crime against God if they don't win a world series every year. It is only fitting that Boston finally gives them a boot in the ass. I'd also like to bring up how the Florida Marlins kicked the Yankees' ass last year. Damn I'm tired of the Yankees. Hell, I relished it when the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series, the one series where a NY team seemed destined to win. That is how boring it has become for the Yankees to win or even appear in a World Series. It is about damned time they took their turn at being a cellar dweller team.

The next thing on the agenda, a world series victory for the Cubbies! Cubs fans have been doing more suffering than the Red Sox.

Also on the to do list, at least some kind of world series appearance for the Houston Astros. Their franchise has gone the longest amount of time without even a world series appearance, much less a win. I still cannot get over how they choked against the Mets in 1986 in the NLCS. They got even closer to the World Series this year. But this was Boston's turn. Sometime soon it has to go Houston's way.

Joe: The babe had so much booze in him when he died he's goood for a couple of centuries. The Babe is buried in the Gate Of Heaven Cemetary in Valhalla New York. Someone went there yesterday and covered the headstone with Red Sox's.

I see the Boston will be opening at home in 2005 against the Yankees. [Smile] Bet you all can't wait till 2090 (86 more years) when you will win your next Series. [Eek!]

For perspective, this year's payrolls:
Yankees - $184 million
Red Sox - $127 million
Cardinals - $78 million

Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 10-28-2004, 06:55 PM:

That's a good point. But a huge payroll does not guarantee a World Series victory. WS 2003 is a good example. What was the payroll of the Florida Marlins? I don't know the figure, but I do remember press people saying it was much lower than that of the Yankees.

Before you all bitch too much, consider that the Yanks are good for baseball. Did any other team draw over 3.5 million fans this year? Don't think so.

Did any other team draw more on the road than the Yanks? Don't think so.

Old addage: "It takes money to make money".

Hate George Steinbrenner? Too bad. Go argue with success. Yanks will be back next year.

No, the mighty Colorado Rockies, a tremendous force to be reckoned with, will take the World Series next year.

What is this "curse" bullshit everyone keeps harping about?
In 1918 the Red Sox won their 5th World Series, the most by any club at that time. One of the stars of the Boston championship franchise was a pitcher, The Babe, Babe Ruth or The Bambino whatever you want to call him...(Really named, George Herman Ruth).

In 1920, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee needed money to finance his "girlfriend's play", so he sold Babe Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees for $100,000 (plus a loan backed up by Fenway Park).

Since then, the Yankees, who had never won a World Championship before getting Ruth on their side, have gone on to win 26, and are arguably one of the greatest success stories in the history of the sport.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox have appeared in only four World Series since 1918, losing each one in game seven (ALWAYS GAME 7!). Many consider Boston's performance after the departure of Babe Ruth to be attributable to "The Curse of the Bambino." Hence what we usually call "The Curse".

What is up with many of the batter's helmets and some of the bats?
Ok, not sure why people do what they do but I know from experience that the equipment is expensive! Not that they should have a problem with that...

My guess is its for luck and the old saying, if its not broke, don't fix it. The moldy old helmets work so why replace them? And when you find a bat you really like its hard to get used to a new one. I don't care what anyone says...you can weigh and measure your wooden bats all you want but no two are ever the same, they just don't balance the same. So it really sucks when you break one... [Frown]

OK?

Wasn't that pine tar on the batting helmets?

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6340531/

quote:
Ramirez was the MVP of the first inning, by far.

After getting some pine tar from the top of his gooey batting helmet, he hit a solo home run with two outs into the loge level in left field.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2004/07/16/nixon_its_dirty_pool/

quote:
Trot Nixon, his words dripping with anger and sarcasm, said he has not received a directive from Major League Baseball instructing him to wipe off the pine tar obscuring the "B" logo on his batting helmet.
"The reason I put pine tar on my helmet is so I don't have to put as much on the bat. Manny [Ramirez] was the first one to suggest I do that. What next? When I slide headfirst and get dirt on the `Boston' on my jersey, are they going to make me change my jersey?

"It's a joke, that's what that is. An absolute joke, and you can quote me."

At Tuesday's All-Star Game in Houston, a source in the commissioner's office, discussing a dispute with Nomar Garciaparra over the Sox shortstop covering the MLB logo on the back of his helmet, for which he was fined and threatened with suspension, said MLB also planned to issue a directive instructing players such as Nixon and Ramirez to clean their helmets so the team logo would be visible. It was a marketing issue, the source said. "You'll see a difference at the start of the second half," the source said.

Nixon said yesterday he had heard nothing from MLB, and if he does, he plans to defy the directive.

"They're just trying to control everything," Nixon said. "This ain't football. This isn't the NFL. I'm supposed to worry about that? What about getting hits and winning ballgames. That doesn't have anything to do with whether I put pine tar on the `B' on my helmet.

"I don't care what they say. I'm not paying any fine."

Players use pine tar to improve their grip on their bats. Often it is applied directly to the bats; Nixon said he puts it on his helmet so he has better control over how much he gets on the bat handle.

"It would be a different story if John Henry or Larry Lucchino or Theo [Epstein], the team ownership had come to me," Nixon said. "And if the fans had say they didn't like it, that it was ugly, I'd pay attention to that. But I'm sorry, I don't think this should be such a big deal."

Man, the pine tar thing brings back memories of George Brett and the great pine tar controversy.

For those who don't know, George Brett (arguably the best player to ever wear a Kansas City Royals uniform) was called out by an umpire after hitting a home run. The reason, pine tar was covering too much of the bat. It was a rule most people concede as comlete bullshit today. It did nothing to help Brett hit home runs (unlike something else such as a corked bat). The opposing team brought up the issue, a group of umps examined the bat and then the head ump called him out. The scene was memorable for the way Brett went completely ape shit. He ran off that bench at those umpires like he was going to kill all of them.

Congrats to the Yankee team for once again proving that George Steinbrenner should not have gotten rid of George Costanza!

More importantly, I am somewhat upset that the Red Sox won since NOW I will have to endure Madamn Moderator's wrath for the next 86 years.

Note: While I will be long gone and dead and rotting in my grave, she will hold a weekly séance to try to contact me to "rub it in".
