I was looking into setting up an account with Ameritrade to buy and trade stock online. They seem to have the cheapest rates that I can see. Does anyone do this and is it easy or complicated to buy and trade stock with one of these online companies?

I have Ameritrade. Can't tell you much though. I bought a few things and thus far haven't sold anything in about 1.5 years time. Setting up the account and buying was simple enough. Didn't even have to get up from my computer chair. [thumbsup]

Some online brokers charge an administration fee if your account does not have a lot of activity. Price of each trade can be only one of several charges. Just be aware.

I would recommend scottrade.com. That is who I go with.

My brother uses Scottrade, he's happy with it. Something like $7 trades (plus a bunch of free ones when you sign up), and no penalties for inactivity. $500 to open an account.

Online trading seems like a rip off. Granted, one must do his/her homework to be profitable, but what about other forms of investments such as bank stocks - or even gold. This can be done by one's self, thus maximizing returns while limiting costs. Moreover, it isn't very risky.

An old immigrant from Italy once told me that the only stock worth investing IS bank stock since no bank ever plans on going under. When this man died he was quite wealthy figuring he came to America in 1946 with nothing but the cloths on his back. I've applied his advice and it has worked well over the years.

Well, you have access to the online brokers, too. And it's a lot cheaper to trade online than with a local brokerage. You might be thinking of "day trading", which is not the same as online trading.
