Surviving Christmas is coming out on video 12/21 ... that's one day short of TWO MONTHS since its theatrical bow.

Not a surprise since it was such a bomb, but is this a record for a mainstream film?

Maybe with the Academy DVD-screener ban, they want to make sure all of the Academy members have a copy so they can vote it "best picture". [Razz]

Reinforcing the public with more reasons to not even bother to go to the movies, just wait for the DVD...

I already saw an ad somewhere on the Internet for The Incredibles DVD, coming in April!

Additionally, Maria Full Of Grace came out on DVD this week, while it's still in first run theatres here!

Again, why bother with the expensive movie theatre anymore...

Incredibles in April, that's not too bad considering every location in the country played it on the break!

As for that "wait for the DVD" thing, it's just a matter of giving 'em something to leave the house for! Good sound, big sharp picture, cute concessionaires, the list goes on. [Big Grin]

What most people in our business still fail to acknowledge is that Hollywood now views all of theatrical exhibition as nothing more than a promotional tool for the more important video release.

Yes, most Exhibitors are in complete denial, even though they are seeing their patron counts getting smaller and smaller. Look at all the theatres that have closed this year alone due to poor performance.

Hmm,

Take the family to The Incredibles - $60 or more

Rent Shrek 2 on DVD at Blockbuster - $1.99 + maybe $1 or $2 for popcorn and soda at home.

You do the math.

Exactly- that's why I don't understand why new theaters continue to be built with small screens with top-down masking. If I want to watch letterboxed movies I can do that at home! Bring back the HUGE screens and I'll go every week!

Incredibles in APRIL!?!? That's insane. That basically means that sub-runs won't get it for the early summer audience. At least they were able to have Nemo around Thanksgiving [Frown]

Denial of what? We've been "up" for 4 of the past 5 years, and will also be "up" this year, even though our population has declined somewhat and our ticket prices have only changed once during that time. I think it's because people like going out to the movies here, imagine that.

I don't think the prices are much of a deterrent for people who LIKE going to the movies...given what they spend on other entertainment like ballgames, concerts etc. movies are still a bargain. Try taking a family of 4 to "Disney on Ice" for $60. You'll probably spend more than that on the parents' tickets alone.

They knew Surviving Christmas was going to tank before it was even released. That's why they put it out in October. If the movie would've been a hit, the video would've been held until next November, obviously. There has never been a blockbuster movie DVD that didn't have a prior theatrical release ahead of it.

Screener ban? Members of many award-bestowing organizations already have The Incredibles and The Life Aquatic DVD's from Disney to give just two examples.

Update: I just heard from a friend who works in advertising that The Incredibles will now be released in MARCH. He is working on Internet advertising for it and soon there will be pop-up's galore regarding the MARCH DVD Release!
