Probably the last show business death of the year, after so many others, jazz clarinettist Artie Shaw has died, aged 94.

He played lead in developing that oh so distinctive big band sound which has yet to go out of style. Guess what I'll be primarily listening to for a while? RIP Artie.

I don't know what he has been doing in recent years but it would be good to see his band active again as with the Glen Miller, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey bands. He contributed a lot to the big band era and sound and will be missed.

From what I understand, he quit playin in the '50s because he was unable to maintain a certain quality that was his standard.

Luckily, orchastras like The Tucson Pops keep his music alive.

He did have a busy life...I have many LP's and I've got an extensive collection on the ol' PC and MP3s. I love Jazz and grew up with the Big Band sound....odd for a 22 year old isnt it?
Just wanted to let you older ones know that ya'll arent the only ones that keep up with the "kings" of REAL music. Hearing of Artie's death reminds me how I cried....literally cried when Henry Mancini died. He, Artie, Count Basie and Duke Ellington oh and of course Cole Porter were the reasons I started collecting records and truly appreciated Jazz. I dreamed one day I would get to go on a road trip and meet Henry, but that never happened... [Frown]

I have a bunch of old 78's that feature Artie Shaw. They came from an old radio station, and I got them when they decided to stop repairing the old players that they had been using since the early 1930's. They copied what they wanted to keep to reel to reel, and dumped the rest. Fortunately, I got them all.

That's right. He put his clarinet down in the 1950s and never touched it again.
