Does anyone know if these drives are available for purchase? I am thinking of upgrading my burner and would like to try one. Anyone have any opinions on these drives?

LightScribe is a burner drive capable of also laser-etching a custom label on the disc. Requires special LightScribe media. If the price isn't outrageous, this is actually pretty neat-o.

That's pretty interesting. However my Epson R300 printer does a magnificent job of printing on cds. And at only $200 I think it was, it's a great bang for the buck.

Seems like all you need is the LightScribe cds or dvds to use it

Hmm...my Sharpie has done a great job of labelling CDs and it was only $1 or so.... Even better bang for the buck!

I just saw a commercial for HP PC's with Lightscribe drives. Apparently HP is behind this technology.
According to the FAQ on the website, you need specific Lightscribe-enabled discs and drives.
Also, according to the FAQ, it only burns in grayscale.
Looks cool, but for now, I'll stick with my Sharpie.

its an interesting idea to use the same laser that burns the cd to burn an image on the reverse surface. It seems that it could be a straightforward process to make them full color by adding different colored dye layers that the laser burns off sequentially... like when I scratch the emulsion off of a movie to see the colorful squiggly lines!
