Former 'Tonight Show' Host Carson Dies

LOS ANGELES -- Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79.

"Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or the location.

The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience. "

Carson was great... I grew up with him. All stations should shut down transmitters for one hour in remembrance of him.

He was the best. Those of you who never got to experience him in action missed a true master.

I guess those envelopes hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnals porch will now never be opened.

Definitely very sad. I always enjoyed Carson. He was much more entertaining than the talk show hosts of today in my opinion. But I guess cutting down other hosts is a topic for another thread someday. It's interesting because I just watched a collection of some great Johnny Carson moments two days ago!

A lot of his greatest moments live on with the DVDs and videos which are available at his website, although they hardly scratch the surface. A true legendary talent. I still miss him on TV.

Johnny was interviewed (which was a rare occurance in itself) for 60 Minutes many years ago. When the interview was ending, the correspondent (I think it was Mike Wallace) asked him what he wanted for an epitaph. Johnny thought for a few seconds, then quipped "I'll be right back". [thumbsup]

I am old enough to remember his "Who do you Trust" game show he and Ed hosted prior to the Tonight show....I remember being around 10 watching on my grandmother's battleship size Philco TV set [Smile]

His restored childhood home is on sale on EBAY this week for $93000 + [scream]
