Let's see how many members of the forums can get together this summer for a gathering. I am proposing we meet in Watseka, Illinois to take in a movie "film done right" at the Princess II theater and then whatever else this fabulous town has to offer.

I'm so there! Watseka is about a 2 hour drive from where I live. Lets only hope that that high-tech theatre is playing the new Star Wars if we go!

And I thought I was the only one to work at a theater that still had mono sound!

Let's see
May and June doing vacation relief and the Seattle International Film Festival. Mid-July going to the IATSE confab in Hawaii.
Illinois this summer, don't think so.

At this point, the only weeks over the summer I wouldn't be able to go would be the last week of May and first week of June.

Anybody who wants to run to Hoopeston afterward and see something at Greg Boardman's Lorraine Theatre is welcome.

I say instead of IL, I say FL. Not cause I'm already here, but because ShowEast 2005 Is taking place there in October. But hey, it was just another idea. I was thinking about the time we could have to plan for this. September would be best for me.

Pick a weekend sometime this summer or fall, not during August, and I'll be there.

I hope that they don't sell out for the appointed showtime. Do they sell tickets in advance? Also, will we all walk out and demand refunds soon after the show starts, or will we stay and mock the presentation throughout?

They're still open. I just called them. "Guess Who" opens on Friday.

Their phone number is (815)-432-4461 and I have never heard worse sound quality on any answering machine, ever. It's appropriate for that place, I suppose....

Well at least they're still open...that's more than you can say for a lot of "big" theatres these days.

(For another interesting answering machine, call the Rose Theatre in Glendive, Montana. 406-377-2828 but call before 7:00 mountain time or you'll get a live person.)

I'm there, might be the only chance I get to meet all of you...well most of you. Who knows when I will get the chance to go to Showest or Show East so count me in.

Any time is good, just need a good warning on the date so I can request the time off

I would also suggest we make the trek over to Normal if the opportunity arises and check out the Normal theater as well.

How bout lexington kentucky. We can all go to the Kentucky Theatre and take in a movie It's a very nice theatre in design Tim Reed knows all about it and he can probably give us a tour of the facility if he happens to come to town. They have two auditoriums The main large restored auditorium and one next door that used to be a X Rated 35MM operation.

Darryl, yes! Heh-heh, but I'm sure Raymond would be more than happy to keep everyone entertained for a few days.

For those who don't know, I installed the equipment at the Kentucky Theatre and designed the booth for the new construction -- which used to be the old Downtown Cinema balcony. It's booth done right (although, the architect screwed me at the last minute and the screen ended up being a postage stamp). In the new booth, conduits are embedded in the floor, including the Dolby Digital cable; so there's just a projector sitting there in the middle of the floor, with nothing connected to it... which used to be common practice in booth design, but is rarely done today.

I also spec'd. screening room-style double-paned optical glass portholes (with each pane at specific angles), just big enough for the image to pass through.

I agree that Chicago would be a hoot! There is also the Chicago Cinema Museum, Steve Krause's screneing room, countless theatres,ALOT of good food and bars , and Al Capones grave site..... Watseka is just a pleasant 3 hour drive from there and best of all Chicago has two actual operating Airports ! We could go around the time of Ebert Fest... when ever that is... Watseka is about half way to Champaign.

Hot tip, Tim: A while back there was this invention called an "airplane". It's a travel conveyance that could carry humans from one place to another. It is much faster than a motor vehicle and is something you should look into.

Monte, that is a nice complex. Of course you have to join some kind of club to get a drink in that town

If the Mega isnt running film, it isn't because of the equipment. Most likely the limited number of large format titles for a multiplex to choose from.

Daryl, I'm up for Lexington. I have family there too! I'm sure I could manage to get a few of us a damn good meal while in town. They live in Nicholasville...not too far at all.

While were at it, I'd also recommend coming here to South Bend and visiting the Browning Family Cinema at the DeBartolo PAC on the campus of Notre Dame. Just saw Ben-Hur there and it was simply breathtaking. Throughout the year, they will be showing classic and art films. Lawrence is coming up next week!

Besides test films and a few odd reels of stuff, the feature 'After The Sunset' has played the CW screening room.

Just yanking your chain. I also vote we have the gathering there in June. Nobody would ever intentionally go to Watseka anyway. Will the concession stand be stocked with Reese's peanut butter cups, or did the projectionist eat them all?

Count me in, if it's not in the next couple of months. Money's a bit tight at the moment, after doing New Jersey and Bradford in the same month. Maybe we could fit in a Visit to York as well, it doesn't take that long to get there.

Distances are always going to be a problem for the US people, even If you hold it right in the middle of the Country it's going to be a long way from somebody. If Scott Norwood wanted to visit Michael Schaffer he would have to travel almost as far as he would to visit me.

I'd guess that there are 5-10 Brits who regularly post here. In addition, Jet2 does direct low-budget flights to LBA from France (CDG) and Holland (AMS), which should make it not too expensive for people from mainland Europe to come. How about a Euro-Film Tech gathering on a 'Cinerama' Saturday afternoon towards the back end of the summer, e.g. the August or September screening day? Feedback please...

Amsterdam would be possible, too. There are good transport links from all over Europe, though it might be an idea to hold off until the autumn when flights will be a lot cheaper.

Well, there are plenty of former cinemas which have been converted into churches.

There's an interesting building in London. It was built as a fairly early cinema, in the style of a Mosque. It eventually closed as a cinema, and had various other uses for a while, before being abandoned and boarded up. A few years ago it was restored and re-opened as, guess what, a mosque. I wonder how many people who see it for the first time today realise what its origins were.

My sentiments exactly! When I was there last October my friend Marko got my friend and I a tour of the Tuchinski Theater in downtown Amsterdam, it was pretty nice to see. I'll have to email the pics to brad sometime.

Many historic houses/PAC's have their classic movie series in summer. You get the whole shebang with theatre organ, curtain, plater frou-frou, etc., & might want to think about a city with one of those, like the Atlanta Fox, the impeccably-restored Alabama Theatre in Birmingham (although there's not much else that's diverting in Birmingham, compared to other cities), or the New Orleans Saenger.

The New Orleans Saenger is supposed to have its Norelco's back in use this summer; it will be interesting to see after the last couple of years of having a company bring in equipment running changeovers on one projector with a blue picture & the other with an orange picture.

As enticing as New Orleans may sound, be aware that New Orleans in summer will hammer people even from other hot (but dry) locations to a jelly. It's got occasional breezes from the river, though, so it's not as bad as Jackson, Mississippi, where I once saw an out-of-town lady waiting for a van outside of a building after a meeting just break down into tears from the heat & crouch on the ground. If they're telling people in Jackson, MS that hell is hotter than Jackson, you bet they're scared.

I would be open to something after May 5th as I can take a paid vacation from my job at that time. Would prefer that we were some where close to a days drive from me as the price of gas has gotten stupidly high recently and I have not had a cost of living increase in my pay in 4 years now.

I'd humbly suggest a "help build the Norwood Screening Room" party (I supply parts, attendees supply labor and test films/equipment).

If you saw the way my stage is built you probably woulnd't say that!

In Montana, the best theatre is probably the Wilma in Missoula. I haven't been to a movie there in years, but the place is dripping with history and is truly elegant. (Over 1100 seats in the main house!)

Well, I'm out if you're at Cinema West. Everytime a FT group gets together it seems to be on the West Coast. I really can't go anywhere that I can't drive. Take in mind I'm willing to drive up unti but no more then 24 hours! Midwest - Eastcoast is really all I can do.

I'm another one that likes the idea of an East Coast gathering!

I too am limited to places I can get to by driving. Apparently, I'm not quite as hard-core about driving as Rachel is.
Then there's the whole matter of needing to make my request a good amount of time in advance - and not too many days in the request.

I disagree Mike... The Washoe in Anaconda is by far the best in Montana, and by far the best Art Deco in the counrty and ranked 5th in the nation for its architecture!! Its ALL original right down to the immaculate triple pair of Supers in the booth..... Very fortunately we get to do the service work there

Really now, The Wilma looks like anyones neighboorhood theatre by comparison!

Here is a review I found of it on a Google....

"The Washoe shares the distinction with New York City's Radio City Music Hall of being the last two theaters done in the Art Deco style, and the Washoe is actually the more impressive. The brick exterior is unremarkable, and when you see it you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. But inside, this is a true movie palace. Considered one of the most architecturally significant theaters in the country, it's a work of art in cerulean, salmon, beige, and yellow, with a fabulous curtain. If you arrive at midday, the theater is usually closed -- it's still a working movie theater and doesn't open until evening. Adam, How come you've missed this gem? I think you're too wrappred up in visiting every plex! Get drivin dude, its probably just a short 4 day trip each way for ya to Montana and back......

Mark - you're right. I misworded. I should have said, the Wilma is the best theatre I've seen in Montana, as far as classic old-timers go. I've never been in the Washoe, would love to some time, but have never been able to time it right. (I've seen the outside during the day, is all!)

I am amazed there's not more about it on the web.
