I put a Pioneer DVR-108 in my Dell a few months ago. It worked fine; I could put in a blank DVD and drag and drop stuff. XP would burn the DVD. I'm not sure when, but sometime after a few Microsoft updates, the DVD stopped working with XP, although I don't know if it was the Microsoft updates. The problem is when I put in a blank DVD, the "DVD-RW" icon changes to a just "CD" and won't burn. Any suggestions?
I have NERO, which works fine, so I can still burn stuff. But I like doing it through XP because NERO's interface is a pain to navigate through for a simple burn.

Are you using the most recent firmware?
This page from Pioneer says 1.18 is the current version. It also has a program that will tell you what firmware your drive is using.

Also check http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com for any Windows patches. Now that I think about it more, I seem to recall there was some sort of patch involving writing to CD or DVD. It wasn't a critical update, so it wouldn't have installed automatically.

Windows Update - HighMAT Support
is this what you were talking about, Adam?

When did XP get the ability to natively burn DVDs (without a helper-app)?

They haven't, he was either using something in the background or burning a CD. It's supposed to be in the next version of windows, but we all know how that goes.
