I'm gearing up to have a major photo shoot for my upcoming member pic and I'd like to know what you'd like to see.

What should I wear?
How should I fix my hair?
Color or black-and-white?
Indoor or outdoor?
Smiling or pensive?

...and who else is due for a new-and-improved member photo?

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 04-28-2005, 04:39 AM:

Since this will be for your forum picture, I imagine that this will be a high-dollar photo extravaganza event with a professional photographer who usually takes pics of models and celebrities. Nothing less than a full blown tuxedo will do. Also, in the background there should be an explosion or maybe a nuclear holocaust to set things off nicely.

Call up Brad, he's probably a professional by now. Brad, you and your fancy new camera can kick my 3.2 megapixels butt. It's all about the lighting people!

Manny, wear something that goes well with your eyes. And smiling... gotta love that smile.

What a crazy coincidence! I was just about to send this to Brad's members photos update queue. [Razz] [Wink]

No, but seriously, mine is due for an update, too.

Manny, I think you should wear a bunch of old trailers draped around your shoulders, you should fix your hair by using a comb (or brush), you should paint your face in black-and-white, and sit in a doorway to the outside while leaning your head in your hand in the classic Thinker pose. Perfect! Or, yeah, like Joe said ... explosions.

Given your recent theme in posts, I would recommend an outside shot of you with your hand on your chin, one finger covering your mouth, eyebrows raised, chin lowered (but mouth closed) with the background scenery of an ass in a field. [Big Grin]

I'll post some actual non-snapshot photography samples next week.

Maybe I'll do some new self portrait pics once I decide on a new D-SLR camera I'm thinking about buying. I'm trying to decide between a Canon EOS 30D, a Nikon D200 or just spending more on a Canon EOS 5D. The thing that seems most dreadful is the amount of money that will then have to be spent on lenses. Those Canon L-series auto focus lenses can be very pricey.

Posted by Jennifer Pan (Member # 2035) on 07-30-2006, 12:36 PM:

Awhile back I bought the Sigma Tele&Standard Zoom set for my Nikon D50 SLR, its alright I guess but I end up always using my original Nikon lens.

Brad, thanks for getting the new pix up. I forgot what I looked like when I was on our mountain in winter.

Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 07-30-2006, 02:14 PM:

Depending on the camera model I buy, I may just get a couple lower cost lenses just to get started.

The high quality lenses, such as those L-series lenses from Canon, make a noticeable difference. I'd like to at least have a good L-series 70mm-200mm. Their 28mm-300mm lens would be even better.

Pretty expensive hobby, but good if you can get paid for the work. Maybe I'll buy a good tuxedo and start shooting some weddings. I think its less work to just snap pictures than try to videotape those things.

Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 07-30-2006, 04:48 PM:

I've got a Nikon D100 and love it. Don't cinch on the lenses though! You get what you pay for.

As far as weddings go...screw that!!! In the late 80s and early 90s I used to videotape those things and I believe I was one of the first people (aside from tv station sort of things) with multiple cameras. I never shot with less than 3, and my top wedding I had 12. Needless to say editing was a bitch back in the day before non-linear editing.

Anyway the point is that while high profile weddings DO pay pretty good, it's just not worth the hassle, and what's worse is that when you are done, nobody wants to sit through the video or look at the pictures because you just did all that work for a very limited number of viewers, meaning the family. God forbid something was to happen and you miss the cutting of the cake or something important like that too! Thankfully I never did, but I heard some horror stories from other photographers to the tune of ridiculous lawsuits over it.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget the biggest pain in the ass of weddings...you have to dress up too for those things. That's pretty much the icing on the cake as to why I will never shoot another wedding in my life. [Wink] [puke]

There is plenty of money to be made in photography if you are truly good at it. [thumbsup]

Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 07-30-2006, 05:36 PM:

Yeah, I was kind of joking about the wedding thing. It's a pain enough from having to take photos and video when its someone you know getting married. If I were doing that sort of work professionally I sure wouldn't do it for cheap. The problem is there's not a whole lot of other professional photography tasks one can do in my area.

Normally I would be leaning to just getting a Canon D-SLR right off the bat. However, the Nikon D200 has a very cool feature to it not offered by any Canon model. An intervalometer will allow you to shoot programmed time lapse movies at up to 3872 X 2592. None of the Canons let you do that. The only bad thing about the D200 is it doesn't do as well in lower light settings. As ISO levels of 800 and higher it generates a lot more noise than the CanonEOS 30D or 5D.

With every D-SLR camera you're having to give up something to get another thing.

ISO 800? I only use ISO 400 in X-TrEmE emergencies as I find it is way too grainy. ISO 800 would be like pointing the camera at a TV tuned to a blank channel and taking a picture. Maybe I am just too sensitive to noise. ISO 400 can be good for long exposures when there is next to no light like this shot I took at 2:00am recently:

Tried to upload in the coveted JPEG2000 format, but most browsers don't seem ready for that.

Bobby, is there a site or something that you are comparing the cameras to? Or does the store let you take them out and test them under extreme low light?

Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 07-30-2006, 09:11 PM:

I read a lot of different reviews, immediately tossing aside the product puff-piece articles that pretend to be product reviews. In general, both the Canon EOS 30D and Nikon D200 have received great reviews.

Anyway, the one that talks about noise being an issue in low light with the Nikon D200 was a review at creativepro.com
http://www.creativepro.com/story/review/24103.html

That article has a partial image crop at 100% of an idential item shot with a Canon EOS 30D and a Nikon D200. Both were shot as ISO 1600. There's quite a difference. However, as Joe points out, few may need to use that setting. It's still interesting how much better the Canon camera performs. I also have to wonder what kind of lens was used on either camera. The piece of glass in front of the imager counts for a lot.

Jen, there are sites that review D-SLR's .. lenses and accessories. One of the best is dpreview.com, which also has very informative forums for each camera system. As has been said, none of them are 'perfect'. But, they improve at a rapid rate.

At certain settings they'll all be a tad noisy, but compared to 35mm film of the same speed, under the same conditions, they're amazing! Also, there are excellent noise-lessening software 'plug ins' available. "Noise Ninja", for one. I rarely need it.

'Camera RAW' is the only way to shoot if one wants the most versatility in their images, in my opinion. It's basically an unprocessed digital negative format that dumps all the raw data from the sensor on to the flash card. Makes huge files, tho. The negative is later 'developed' in software on one's computer. It takes TIME to learn how to use it effectively, however.

I was a dyed-in-the-wool Nikon-F user, since the late 60's. Now I use a Canon Digital Rebel, and love it. I'd probably have gotten the D100 Nikon if it had been available at the time, though I certainly don't regret my decision. It took a while for me to get used to the 'Canon Way', however.

I wouldn't invest a lot of dough in -any- moderately priced digital body .. they change too often, unlike the old F's. The lenses pretty much stay the same, and that's where I put the money.

Avoid aftermarket lenses, if possible. They aren't really worth the money, in my view, tho I don't think it's necessary to have 'The Best' Nikon or Canon lenses to make great images. 'L' series Canon lenses are nice (for the most part), but are very expensive overkill for most non-pro users, in my opinion. Lots of very occasional shooters have them for the snob factor alone (I know a few, but at least they let me use them when I need a special range I don't have). Nikon and Canon's 'consumer' level lenses produce awfully dang good images these days. Their build-quality (mostly plastic) isn't as good as their most expensive lenses, of course, but I haven't had any trouble with them at all. They're a lot lighter (and -much- less expensive) than the high-end lenses, as a compensation.

My most-used lens is the Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It can produce some pretty amazing sharp images hand-held in very low light, in spite of being fairly 'slow'. That's when the image stabilization really helps! It has pretty good macro ability, too (tho not as good as my old Micro-Nikkor's). It's in their 'consumer' lens line and is about $420. Great all-around very versatile lens.

The D200 can be programmed to shoot a real time lapse video sequence. That could be any number of things. Boiling thunderstorm clouds immediately come to mind.

Granted, the process isn't as simple as hitting the record button on a video camera and capturing footage directly into an editing application. But it isn't much more difficult either. You can apply a Photoshop "action" on a folder of images to get them formatted for the video format used and then dump the resized frames onto the timeline.

Hmmm. I sent in a new picture a few months ago since the one here is probably from the 1997-1998 time period. I'll find another one to send since the one I sent must have gotten lost, or maybe I missed a detail from the rules.

I still look like my picture (have long hair) except maybe my face is a little fatter than it was. It's funny. The picture on my profile now was a cropped version of one I posted inline in a post around the time the profile picture thing was started. It was done for me. :-) I'll have to go through some more recent pictures and find one I like that I can crop and send in.

I always liked the animal pictures that used to be in place for members that didn't have photos. Those were a hoot!

Recently, I got a new Canon Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixel, and the aspect is 3:2 for the images instead of 4:3).

What's up with that? Canon has RAW as well but it is different from Kodak RAW. Why can't there be one RAW standard? Why can't we all just... get along?

I shoot in nothing but RAW most of the time. Compression is for people who hate quality. Using RAW makes me feel elite and I like that. It helps me when I am talking down to people. And I do that a lot. It's fun! Everybody should use RAW and be elite. Too bad the uncompressed RAW format decompresses so slowly.

The emerging thing is applications that deal directly with RAW images from a variety of cameras and do more than the modest utilities bundled in with some cameras.

Aperture from Apple is the only commercially available standalone application (one not bundled with something else) that deals with processing RAW images.

Adobe Bridge handles camera RAW images from a lot of different camera models, but is pretty basic in nature. And it is not sold by itself. It comes as an add on with other Adobe applications. I like it alright for the image browser, which gives you previews of lots of different raster-based and vector-based images.

Adobe Lightroom is Adobe's real Camera RAW editing application, which is currently in beta testing. The Windows beta recently became available -and added support for several new camera models. The Mac version will be Adobe's first universal binary release for both Intel and PPC CPUs. The Lightroom beta has received high marks. Reviewers say it runs a lot faster and more stable than Aperture and has less demanding hardware requirements.

Probably more fun because that is all you could take.

Gotta watch out with the old folk though. There are some pretty tough 60 year olds out there. I wouldn't really consider 60 elderly, but you wouldn't normally think they could do anything to you. My uncle is 52 and he can throw me around like a rag doll, and I'm 200lbs, not exactly a light weight. He hasn't worked out a day in his life.

I guess I should have included a [Big Grin] so you wouldn't blow an o-ring, but I find I get more interesting responses when I don't.

I never blew an O ring. Not mad at all. You said you enjoy beating people up, I am giving you a chance to try. Just a proposition. I thought it would be fun. I guess you only talk big online though, oh well.

I'll kick both your asses, and let Phil take credit for it online. [Big Grin]

Sorry Jeremy, but I know all I have to do is throw Mr. Pibb on you and you'll melt and I can take your money and destroy your lavish lifestyle!

For Jeremy:

I've got to be honest, I'm a little confused by your tactics. So, I'm gonna keep acting tough, until I figure it out.

You are a cool guy, I wouldn't want to fight someone that I like. However, if you wish I will accept the challenge.

For Joe:

I don't even know what to say. All these years you have been on here making fun of everyone and talking tough and when someone finally calls you out you just back away. Quite a few of the people that I have met off of this site have asked me, because they know that I know Brad, "How does joe get away with saying half the stuff he says?" The excuse is "that's just his sense of humor." So I know I am not alone, most people just won't speak up beacuse you are a moderator. Titles don't scare me. I don't know what possessed me to do this today, maybe it is from all the Deadwood I have been watching or all my reading on Thomas Jefferson. I do find it interesting that you try to make fun of me WHILE pussing out on me. Classic tactic of insecurity. I do hope that you reconsider my offer.

Joe is not a moderator. Like many people (including myself), you do have to understand his sense of humor in order to "get" many of his posts.

Yeah I'm confused by Jeremy's tactics, too. I've given it all my brainpower and I just can't seem to figure it out, but I've got my top scientists working on it. Once again Jeremy has defeated us with his prowess. But Jeremy knows I have Mr. Pibb ready to throw on him!

Joe, how much do you want for that Pibb? And shame on you for threatening to waste it! As anyone who has tried it can tell you, Mr. Pibb is the nectar of the gods. But as far as I know, it hasn't been available since November of 2001, replaced by the vomit-inducing Pibb Xtra. From what I hear, Texas is to blame since they were the test market.

But in all seriousness, is Mr. Pibb, REAL Mr. Pibb, available in certain parts of the country? If so, are there any job openings in those areas?

I drink beer, but only kick asses of people I know. Kicking the asses of strangers can get you fucking shot to death. Seriously.
'Kicking the Asses of Strangers' - sounds like the title of an indie, low budget documentary...

Me too, Chris.

Jeremy, I don't need to kick anyone's ass... I just shoot them. I live in Hollywood/Los Angeles for Christ's sake!

I want to see the rest of that picture. There's a towel rack behind Jen, so maybe she's just getting into or out of the shower. [thumbsup]

Am I the only one who visited her Flickr page she invited everybody to earlier in this thread?

A larger, wider version of the photo is there. It doesn't pan down, but there's enough there to figure out she's wearing the same top as the "space poser" shot.

I vote for the "Girl's Gone Wild" producers to add THE JEN to their next DVD!

Didnt mean to confuse anyone by my tactics. Just being a fool. I wouldnt wanna fight Chris or Joe. I think you two are both cool. Though Joe's Mr Pibb threat is below the belt. [fu]

Besides, the only one I could probably take is Jen, and I'm not even 100% sure about that. [Razz]
