So whatdaya say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?
Fix the cigarette lighter.

Like they say on the other form that I visit, "pontiac owns"... I don't know what that means though.

mine doesn't have 340hp, but it sure gets better milage!

Aww, what a cute "big boy" car...even comes with the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION for those who aren't fully ready to take the step into real driving!
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 04-29-2005, 05:00 PM:
So Richard, did you select this car so the girls will flock to it and whoever is driving it? (A very common scenario.)
Posted by Mike Heenan (Member # 392) on 04-29-2005, 05:38 PM:
Aww yeah, it's Bandit time! Lucky guy, looks in nice shape, much better than mine. How much did it cost ya? Mine was originally that color as well (its a 79 though) but the previous owner painted it black.
Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 04-29-2005, 05:50 PM:
I always thought that Pontiacs were cars made in France. The name "Pontiac" just sounds so [forum policy prevents me from saying politically incorrect term]!
Also, you have AUTOMATIC transmission. Real men drive manual transmissions.
Posted by Rachel Gilardi (Member # 1016) on 04-29-2005, 05:53 PM:
Just for the record, that isn't a chick magnet car, not in that color at least. Its a guy's muscle car.
Posted by Tim Reed (Member # 137) on 04-29-2005, 06:09 PM:
Ohh, the memories... I had a deep blue Trans-Am that I bought new from the factory in 1980 (back when projectionists still made good money).
And, yes, it was a chick magnet. It irked me at how shallow some girls could be. I figured, if they couldn't give me a second look when I was toolin' around in my '74 Torino, then to hell with them after I got some money and a nice car. That, I reserved for the true blue only.
Posted by Jon Miller (Member # 163) on 04-29-2005, 07:17 PM:
Wow, it's been a while since I've seen one of those Pontiacs with the thunder chicken on the hood, slushbox transmission or no slushbox. Now where's the mullet?
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 04-29-2005, 08:52 PM:
My sister actually was magnetized by a guy with a TA looking just like Richard's. (Well except it was blue.) Unfortunately he turned out to be a crook (stole $15,000 from the place where he worked) and wound up losing the car AND my sister when he was busted.

A relatively rare find... a T/A with a 6.6
Don't see many of those any more.. 'specially in decent shape..
Gas has to be a beyyatch tho.. I'm in a 2003 Accord right now and I love it..
26-28mpg IN TOWN.

Well, I know Brad got it, everyone else is a little slow today... Oh well.

Yes, but mainly guys have been oogling over it. A few girls have complimented it though. I am getting a lot more attention around town.

I bought it from my Dad for $5k

Ahh, yes. BUT I have a LOT more power because of the wonderful invention called the Torque Converter.

No kidding, I've had the car for a week now and filled up twice! I drive about 34 miles round trip to work and back, a tank lasts about 4-5 days. Good for the environment huh?

...I had fun with my '78 Toyota Celica when I got that one new. Talk about a "chik magnet..!"
They loved them foreign sports cars.
TA's and Camaros were like "cats in a pine box" - dime a dozen.
'Vettes, and "Z's" could attact some serious "chik" attention......
Now, if Richard got himself a '78 Chev "Passion Van" instead of that TA .......

Posted by Richard Greco (Member # 2032) on 04-30-2005, 02:41 AM:
Mind you though Monte, that was back in 1978. Now TA's are hard to come by. Not too many around.
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 04-30-2005, 02:53 AM:
..got that right. 400's were starting to get rare for that era of TA's due to EPA killing them off.
Stock HP for a 400 for a '78 TA was only about 185 HP out of the factory with all of that smog crap plugging up the innards.
I'd rather would love to have a '71 Charger with that 426 Hemi (which I've drove a few times....WOW!!!) up front before EPA started to screw around with emissions and horsepower.
I trust that short block 400 was rebuilt for more HP, and modified to use premimum($$$)unleaded fuel.
Did you sell the Blazer?
Good luck, and have fun...bet the insurance is going to kill you now..
-thx Monte

So how does it make you feel about yourself that you need a car to get attention?
Posted by Richard Hamilton (Member # 321) on 04-30-2005, 08:16 AM:
When I was 18, I had a "68 convertable Vette. Me and my friends nicknamed it "the Pussy Magnet". Being 18 years old, it was awesome the attraction it got. Not just the looks of it, but also the speed.
Posted by Richard Greco (Member # 2032) on 05-04-2005, 12:31 AM:
I calculated my MPG today and found I'm getting a whopping 12MPG. That's actually pretty good considering all the modifications to the engine.
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 05-04-2005, 01:32 AM:
Let's see: with 12mpg (average town/road driving) and a tank of 22(?) gallons, hitting reserve at 19 gallons, filling that monster up with PreUnLeaded 91 octane @ 2.67/gal(?) ..looking at almost 40 bucks to fill that thing once a week.
Kinda had to do a new budget on fuel expenses?
You drive it, if and when necessary and stay home more to play with your computer stuff and write new codes for Nintendo software in C#?

SIX POINT SIX LITRES?!
Apart from 4x4s, cars with engines bigger than two litres are unusual here, and above three litres are virtually unheard of. 1.6 or 1.8 is the average engine size for a family saloon (slightly bigger for Diesel). Given our $8 a gallon fuel price, we don't see many cars like that around here! And the cost of insuring something like that would be in the category of 'if you need to ask, you can't afford it'. Despite having an 11-year no claims record and being in a relatively safe employment category - archivists do not exactly have a reputation as would-be Michael Schumachers - I still pay £492 ($834) a year to insure my 2.0 litre Mondeo.
12mpg sounds scary - apart from the seriously rich, no-one here would consider any car that did below 35 for normal use. At a very rough guess, Richard would be looking at a weekly fuel bill of between $130-$150 based on Monte's figures!
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 05-04-2005, 02:27 AM:
yea..6.6L = 400cid OHV V-8. (actually it cracks in at 6.56L with that cu.in. size, but it was easier to round it up to the next digit)
12mpg is about right for that size of motor for combination city/hwy driving....as long as the foot on the gas pedal isn't getting itchy to 'slam down on the accelerator' at times.
Yea, one night's of work at the drive in is about the price to fill that thing up once, or almost twice a week.
Those people driving those 8.5L (525cid) '1969 Tornados and El Dorados couldn't even see 10mpg if they tried. Course, when those cars came out, fuel was only .289/gal Premimum grade.

(Wistfully recalls Mopar 440 Hemi's, which MEANT something besides just a number)

Indeed, the color's gotta go. Paint that bad-ass black and you're set.
I have to admit I like the older cars, I'd love to pick up a 60's or 70's camaro, but for now I'm into Honda's.
I love the CRX!

True!
Buzzy little Hondas with that 1.5L that sipped gas as if it's on a diet, neat little eyecatcher, easy on insurance, and still a blast to drive!

I've heard so many people describe the CRX as having a go-cart type of ride.
When properly tuned they're so smooth and great fun.
Though the sweet throaghty sound of a Chevy 350 can't be beet.
I love that sound.

This was my CRX Si... My ghetto blaster...

I gave up on Trans-Ams and Firebirds. Every time I got into mine, I seemed to rip the crotch out of my pants. My pants bill was larger than my fuel bill. They are cool. Is that a Turbo TA? Or did they come later?
Posted by William Hooper (Member # 71) on 05-06-2005, 12:48 AM:
Later models like the turbo had the revised decal of the chicknen throwing up on the hood.
Posted by Dan Bouvier (Member # 2655) on 05-06-2005, 12:56 AM:
Sweet! I've got a '79 TA, but I'm getting rid of it.
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 05-06-2005, 02:52 AM:
Let's see: Turbo 4.9 TA's (301cid) with the 7.8 compression ratio and about 12lbs of boost when the turbo kicks in.
Loved that little red '89(?) CRX pict. Too bad it's chopped down to be a boom box car.

Monte,
You'd be surpised... I had Intraxx springs on the CRX.. rode not much different than stock! It rode like it was on rails.. curves were a BLAST... It was a '90 btw.. but good eyes.. The 88-89 were identical years and the 90-91 were as well. The only REAL difference bwteen the 88/89 and the 90/91 were the rub strips down the sides were wider on the 88/9 than the 90/1.
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 05-08-2005, 09:32 PM:
..stiffened up that front end with good anti-sway connections there that little red monster hugged the road without any sway-just "glided" around the corners with fun and a little "G-force" on the side. -Monte
Posted by Jason Black (Member # 684) on 05-08-2005, 09:57 PM:
yeah, the DC strut brace helped stiffen up the front end 'roll' a little..
Never did put beefier sway bars on..
