According to the 5/15 NY Times, the film is also playing in "Digital Projection -- Experience Star Wars the Way It Was Meant To Be Seen" at the Loews Lincoln Square, Loews 34th Street, Loews Kips Bay and Regal Union Square.

Seems to me that the number of Digital locations corresponds very closely to what we would have expected in ancient times for a large 70mm release. Even that "Digital Projection" logo in the times looks a lot like some of the old 70mm logos.

I don't know the exact specs. It's not a really large auditorium. Maybe a 40' to 45' wide screen, and I was in the middle of the auditorium. I need a new glasses prescription, but even so, there was noticeable aliasing. And a few places had that screendoor effect. Like stairs, or some kind of mesh pattern that would flutter as it moved across slowly, or rotated. These movies have these nice, long, slow, rolling perspective flyby shots. Nice and smooth movement, but the edges of things could be crisper.

Others noticed the pixelation, too; it seemed to be worse than Hitchhiker's, which wasn't so bad. Nothing that customers would complain about, I don't think. I'm looking forward to seeing the 35mm in our larger auditoriums, though.

It would be interesting to see some kind of a breakdown between theaters using the old 1280 X 1024 small computer screen resolution DLP versus those using the newer 2K 1920 X 1080 HDTV resolution chips.

It's been awhile since I've scanned the ads in the LA and NY Times. That would be about right for the D-Cinema folks to attempt to plagerize those wide sweeping 70mm logos from the 1980s ads. Guys, D-Cinema sure isn't 70mm. Far from it. It's more like really expensive HDTV.

Bobby, D-cinema is BETTER than 70mm because D-Cinema is digital.

That's the lamest "logo" I have ever seen. They should've put their text above an actual logo, rather than implementing it into the logo. Also some sort of semi-interesting font would have been in order...and lose the stars.

Yep, I must agree with Brad, that DLP "logo" or whatever you want to call it is pretty damned lame. Whoever put it together just made a couple rectangles, threw Helvetica in there (and then distorted the hell out of it like any amateur is prone to do), and then put the whole thing into an envelope filter. Pretty much bullshit design.

So do screens at places like the arclite in LA. Do you think they have DLP screens with the new 2K chips or the old lower res ones? I am advising some friends in LA to make sure to check the age of the installation. What is a good rule of thumb for the age to guess if the installed projector is the higher res one - 6months old? within the last year?

Installation age could be misleading. A smaller market theater with a recent DLP install could really be using a hand-me-down system from a larger theater.

I only raise this point since many theater circuits have installed used digital sound processors in theaters in smaller cities and towns. They're not all brand new equipment.

Apparently they also play the movie in DLP in the "Kristallpalast" in Dresden.Or so I read on the German projectionists' forum.

We are actually going to present it on 2 screens in El Centro in digital.

That new Ultra Star in El Centro is only about an hour from me here in Yuma, Arizona. I have a group of 20 or so friends that are going there tonight to catch Star Wars, as it is only showing at the new Harkins in Yuma (which doesn't have Digital Cinema).

Why doesn't Ultra Star advertise on their site that the El Centro location is Digital? We called them, and were told by the person that answered their phone it was Digital, but were also told that all 14 screens there were digital and they didn't even run film! I know that can't be right, so until I saw you confirm it was 2 copies in digital, I had my doubts that they even had a digital setup at all.

I am not surprised. A surprisingly small number of people has even the slightest clue what digital actually means, and they can never keep digital sound and projection apart. Most of the employess which visited the booth during and after the installation were really surprised to see the big machines because they thought "you guys were runnig DVDs up here"

But thanks for letting me know. I will certainly talk to the GM to make sure he is aware of the fact that the people answering the phone need to have some basic knowledge at least of what they are talking about. Since it is a very new location, that can be excused to a certain degree at this time.

But I can give you reliable first-hand information that we are indeed running 2k NEC digital projectors (with uncompressed 6-channel sound and EX decoding for the surround channels) in auditoriums #4 and #5. I took part in the installation myself, so that is the naked truth.

Kodak is 'the force' behind digital movie projection

Area gets first look with 'Sith' at Tinseltown

The final episode of the epic Star Wars saga is helping to launch a new era in technology for both Eastman Kodak Co. and local moviegoers.

Fans of the historic series of films will be able to watch Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in what's believed to be the region's first screen to use state-of-the-art digital imaging cinema technology. And Kodak know-how will help make it happen.

One of the five screens showing the new movie at Cinemark Tinseltown theaters in Gates will be using a networked digital movie projection system. The system will project the movie from a computer hard drive rather than off rolls of film, the industry's dominant technology for more than a century. It was installed here as a test project between Kodak and theater owner Cinemark USA.

The projector itself is not made by Kodak, but the rest of the system's components have a distinct local flavor. The heart of the system is the Kodak CineServer, which provides the link between projectors and the digitally recorded feature film. The CineServer essentially "plays" the film at the scheduled time.

Kodak also fulfilled two other very important roles. The company provided a cinema-specific operating system for managing digital equipment and recording data and helped format the film to be played on digital screens across the country.

Tinseltown was chosen for the installation as part of a test project between Kodak and Cinemark, which operates more than 3,300 screens worldwide. Kodak wanted an installation relatively close to researchers who helped build the system, the bulk of whom work in its research and development laboratories in Rochester.

The company and Tinseltown officials demonstrated the projection system for the news media Wednesday — using only movie trailers, not the actual Star Wars film.

"It's exciting. When I first started in this, I had a goal for Kodak to be part of the first digital movie projection in Rochester. We're very excited about getting there," said Bill Orfitelli, commercialization manager for Kodak's digital cinema business.

The installation represents an important milestone for Kodak in its shift from film to digital technology.

The company is working to offset expected future declines in sales of movie film with a range of services, software and other products.

That portfolio is intended to help the movie industry apply digital imaging across its spectrum — from taping action on the set, to adding music and special effects, to transmitting films to the big screen.

Though the use of Kodak technology for major releases such as the Star Wars film is new, Kodak's involvement in digital cinema is not.

The company has been working with theaters over the past two years to use digital projectors and related software and networking technology for showing advertising and other content before the movie.

Kodak is installing about 100 new pre-show digital imaging systems a day, said Stephen C. Cataldi, beta program manager and a 20-year Kodak veteran.

Cataldi says the technology development was not the hardest part of developing the system. The movie industry is made up of a series of partnerships that must be carefully navigated. "Each theater is different," Cataldi said.

Orfitelli said the new installations represent the outcome of more than three years of work. The company is also conducting tests in theaters in Illinois, India and China.

Tinseltown is the fourth theater to receive digital movie equipment, said Terrell Faulk, vice president of communications and marketing for Cinemark. She said a system-wide rollout of digital equipment is probably several years away, while the industry continues working out technical and business issues.

"A lot of questions have to be answered. This is going to happen when it's going to happen," she said.

Kodak believes it will play a key role in that rollout, though it is not likely to manufacture its own digital cinema projector. The company will seek to apply a century of experience in imaging and color science, said Richard Sehlin, chief technical officer in Kodak's entertainment imaging unit. "The real key is the management of color," he said.

The Century 22 is now a 2K installation? Ah, no wonder it was a bit more difficult to see the pixels when I saw "Sin City" there a few weeks ago. They were still visible, but smaller than the last time I was there. Definitely an improvement.

There are a lot more 2K installations on that list than I would have expected. That's good news. Here's hoping the world will soon be rid of all the old 1.3K setups. That stuff should never have been allowed anywhere near theaters in the first place.

Of course, 4K should still be the goal, but since a lot of the material currently being shown at these venues was originated at 2K or less, it's not a necessity -- yet.

You seem to be interested in marking the 2k locations, Michael...In that case, put down both of our El Centro auditoriums as 2k locations. We are running the most recent NEC machines there.

Three of the US theatres showing 2K Digital Cinema presentations of "Star Wars Episode III" are using the Kodak Digital Cinema System:

Elk Grove IL, Classic Elk Grove

Las Vegas NV, Century Orleans

Rochester (Gates) NY, Cinemark Tinseltown USA (Auditorium #9, 60x25 foot screen).

The Kodak Digital Cinema System at Elk Grove IL has been been showing regularly scheduled movies ("Robots", "Sin City") since early March.

The AMC Empire 25 in NYC had DLP presentations on opening weekend on two screens (#8 and #13). I believe as of today, it's been reduced to one screen, at least according to the ad in the NY Times.
